T-Mobile boosts subscriber forecast on demand for premium wireless plans
By Juby Babu T-Mobile raised its annual forecast for postpaid net customer additions on Wednesday and added more wireless subscribers than expected in the second quarter, signaling steady demand for the telecom giant's top-tier mobile services. Its shares shot up 5% in extended trading. The carrier now expects to add between 6.1 million and 6.4 million subscribers in 2025, compared with its prior projection of 5.5 million to 6 million additions. T-Mobile's postpaid Experience plans, launched in April, have resonated well with customers. These plans bundle streaming services such as Netflix and Apple TV+ and come with a five-year price guarantee. "About 60% of the new accounts that join us are taking the Experience More and Experience Beyond plan," Jon Freier, president of T-Mobile's Consumer Group, told Reuters. The plans also include the carrier's satellite service T-Satellite that was made available to its own users and those of rivals Verizon and AT&T earlier on Wednesday. The carrier's aggressive promotions and add-on perks have helped it maintain an edge over rivals and increase market share. T-Mobile added 830,000 postpaid phone customers in the second quarter, surpassing FactSet estimates of 700,300 additions. It also reached a deal to sell its entire portfolio of 800 megahertz licenses to private investment firm Grain Management for $2.9 billion in cash and all of Grain's 600 MHz spectrum licenses. The Bellevue, Washington-based company plans to close its $4.4 billion acquisition of regional wireless carrier United States Cellular on August 1, CEO Mike Sievert said on a post-earnings call, after the U.S. Federal Communications Commission approved it earlier in July. T-Mobile, the last among the big three U.S. telecom carriers to report results, posted second-quarter total revenue of $21.13 billion, beating analysts' estimates of $21.02 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. AT&T beat quarterly profit estimates on Wednesday and added more wireless subscribers than expected, while Verizon raised the lower end of its annual profit forecast on Monday.

If Centre did not debate customs duty, Tesla showroom would have opened in 2021: Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray
Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray on Tuesday claimed that if the Centre had not debated on customs duties, the Tesla showroom in Mumbai would have opened in 2021. Speaking to reporters, Thackeray said, "It's a good thing that an electric car showroom is being opened. If the central government had not debated the customs duty, then the showroom would have opened in 2021 only." He added that it is due to the policy for electric vehicles (EVs) made by the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in 2021 that the EV companies are coming to Maharashtra. "The EV policy that we made gives EVs major support in Maharashtra, and due to this, many companies are coming here," Aaditya Thackeray said. The MVA government passed an EV policy in 2021, which was replaced by the Devendra Fadnavis government in 2025. Earlier today, Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis inaugurated the 'Tesla Experience Centre in Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), Mumbai and welcomed Tesla's arrival to India. The Chief Minister said, "I welcome Tesla here in Mumbai. Tesla has opened an experience centre here, and it is a statement that Tesla has arrived and it's a statement they Tesla has arrived in the right city and right state." "It is a matter of great joy for us that Tesla has launched its first experience in India in Mumbai. Tesla is establishing a logistics and servicing system here. Four big charging stations are also being established by them. I am happy that Tesla chose Maharashtra as the state has become a leader in electric mobility. Tesla is launching its Model Y in India. Maharashtra has the most dynamic electric mobility policy. I believe Maharashtra will be a preferred destination when they decide to do manufacturing in India," he added. During the inauguration of the Tesla Experience Centre, Devendra Fadnavis also highlighted the company's global recognition. "Tesla is not just a car or a car company, it is all about design, innovation and sustainability, for which Tesla stands as a testament, and I think that is a one and only reason it is loved globally," he said. The Chief Minister also mentioned the rising demand for electric Mobility in Maharashtra and India. He noted, "We have now in India and especially in Maharashtra, a very big and robust market for electric mobility, we are also a manufacturing hub of electric mobility now, but I think Tesla is going to change the entire market." Towards the end of his speech, the CM assured that "Mumbai and Maharashtra are going to treat Tesla well.... consider us as partners of your (Tesla) journey."

Nigeria's ex-president Muhammadu Buhari passes away at 82; What was the cause of his death?
Former Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari -- who led his country first as a junta strongman and later as an elected democrat -- died Sunday at the age of 82, his aide and the presidency said. Muhammadu governed Nigeria with a strong hand as a military ruler in the 1980s before reinventing himself as a "converted democrat", serving two terms from 2015 to 2023.(AFP) Current President Bola Tinubu said in a statement that his predecessor died in London at about 4:30 pm (1530 GMT) "following a prolonged illness". He did not disclose the nature of the illness. Buhari governed Nigeria with a strong hand as a military ruler in the 1980s before reinventing himself as a "converted democrat", serving two terms from 2015 to 2023. "The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, this afternoon in a clinic in London," Garba Shehu, who served as Buhari's spokesman during his presidency, said in a post on social media. Tinubu said he had spoken with Buhari's widow and ordered Vice President Kashim Shettima to go to England to accompany Buhari's body back to Nigeria. He also ordered flags to fly at half-staff in honour of Buhari, whose tenure was dogged by health rumours. His frequent visits for medical treatment during his presidency attracted criticism about the government's transparency over his illness and worries about leadership during some of his longer absences. Although the nature of his ailment has never been made public, Buhari confessed in one of the trips that he had "never been so ill" and that he had received several blood transfusions. Critics also said the visits highlighted the country's weak health system. - 'A failure of leadership' - Last week his aide Shehu launched a book, titled "According to the President: Lessons from a Presidential Spokesperson's Experience", in which according to local media he confessed to fabricating a 2017 story about rats' invasions at the presidential office, to shift Nigerians focus away from concerns over the leader's health. Buhari had spent nearly three months away receiving treatment in Britain. "When the surge in calls for explanation of why the president would be working from home, if truly he had recovered his health and fit for the office came, I said to the reporters that the office, which had been in disuse, needed renovation because rats may have eaten and damaged some cables," he wrote in the book, according to local media. The rake-thin 82-year-old Muslim from Nigeria's far north made history as the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent leader at the ballot box in 2015. His election victory in a country where re-election for the incumbent had been taken for granted was seen as a rare opportunity for Nigeria to change course. But his time at the helm failed to halt the country's long-standing issues of graft and insecurity, while the oil giant was further dogged by economic woes. Despite concerns about his fragile health, his economic policies, the extent of his claims about better security, as well as the targets of his campaign against graft, he secured a second term in 2019. In a 2020 opinion piece for The New York Times, Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie charged that his tenure in office had shown "a failure of leadership", writing that the 'government of President Muhammadu Buhari has long been ineffectual, with a kind of wilful indifference.'
