Feature: Sowing gains: innovation drives Egypt's wheat surge

QALYUBIA, Egypt, May 29 (Xinhua) -- Islam Ezz, a farmer in Qalyubia governorate north of Cairo, has an unprecedented yield in his wheat fields this year. "Wheat cultivation is beaming this season thanks to the new seeds we obtained from the research institute affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture," Ezz told Xinhua, noting that the yield per feddan (about 0.42 hectares) this year has reached nearly 14 ardebs (about 2,100 kg), a more than 16-percent increase from last year. The middle-aged farmer said they also have periodic visits from agricultural associations offering advice and free treatments for seedling diseases. The Egyptian government's investment in agricultural innovation is yielding fruitful harvests. According to Ramadan Mohamed, another farmer from Manshyat Banha, wheat prices increase during this harvest season, as part of the government's efforts to bolster wheat production. Farmers are encouraged by the competitive price, which stands at 2,200 Egyptian pounds (about 44 U.S. dollars) per ardeb this year, a significant jump from the 2023 supply price of 1,250 pounds per ardeb, he said. "This price increase is a clear incentive for farmers to expand their wheat cultivation," Mohamed explained. The government's many-sided approach extends beyond seed provision, as farmers also benefit from new pesticides at symbolic prices, and the guarantee of swift payment within hours of delivery to government-owned silos. The tangible results of these efforts were highlighted by Alaa Farouk, Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, when he announced earlier this month that this season's yield is expected to reach 10 million tons, a notable increase from the 9.4 million tons recorded in 2024. In a recent TV interview, the minister attributed this success to the development of wheat seeds resistant to salinity and climate change, which has led to a 7-10 percent increase in productivity per acre (about 0.4 hectares) this year. The research institute under the Ministry of Agriculture has been at the forefront of this innovation, successfully developing over 20 varieties of wheat seeds boasting high yields and climate-tolerant qualities, according to the ministry. It also provides farmers with certified seeds at subsidized prices, and they are distributed strategically based on the country's variety map to ensure optimal growth and yield in each region. Meanwhile, al-Bahi Heikal, former director general at the ministry, attributed this season's strong production to a combination of new seeds, modern irrigation techniques, and sound agricultural guidance. Stressing the government's dedication to developing highly efficient wheat seeds and varieties, Heikal told Xinhua, "As a strategic crop vital for bread, pasta, and other baked goods, wheat cultivation is a cornerstone of Egypt's food security."

People stumped by baffling brainteasers as player guesses 'better than answers'

We all hear common sayings every day that we may think little of, but can you guess them when hidden in a brainteaser? These three fun puzzles have got people's minds working overtime If you want to get your mind ticking, there is no better way to spark your thinking cap than a brainteaser - and these three puzzles have left people baffled. Can you solve them? We all know the importance of exercising our bodies, but setting aside time to work on our mind is just as important. Brainteasers can boost your cognitive function, and improve your perception skills. Brainteasers can also help improve your memory and concentration skills, as well as help reduce stress and boost your mood by releasing dopamine. ‌ While you may already have a pretty good idea of how your mind works under pressure, a fun quiz could well offer confirmation. People have been left gobsmacked by three brainteasers in which the answers are common saying. ‌ Popular viral quiz master, The Ezz show on TikTok, shared a video of three, fun puzzles. He shared a video, which has raked in over 20 million views, of two women trying to solve them. People insisted that their guesses are "better than then answers". First up, Ezz showed them a picture a giant, capital A, with the word 'movement' written in small writing on the side of the letter. One of the players immediately suggested it means "a big moment". "A big moment was an excellent guess," the presenter said. The players also guessed "a moment in time", "a moment out of time", a "side moment", "on a moment", "on a moments notice". The host said he "likes the way" that the pair were thinking. Offering a clue, Ezz said: "You guys are doing great. Say, your son or daughter told you for the first time in your life that they love would that maybe mean?" The guesser, appearing confused, suggested "a close moment", but it was not the right answering. The host followed up with, "what are those two doing?", which lead the pair to answer "a touching moment", which is the correct answer. A touching moment often refers to a particular point in time that brings out strong emotions and connection. The next brainteaser, one of the two players guessed straight away. It comes after they were shown an image of history written in large, three times in a row. "History repeats itself," stated the player, who nailed the answer. This saying is often used when people tend to make similar mistakes and experience similar events repeatedly over time. People often use the saying when historical events become prevalent in the modern world. The final puzzle, which Ezz warned would "get a little harder", showed the word 'collar' written on a card with '249 degrees' written below it. "I don't think the young kids are saying this," Ezz offered as a clue. One of the players, who did not manage to get the first two puzzles, said: "Hot under the collar", and got it right. Cambridge Dictionary states that this saying is used to refer to someone who is embarrassed or angry about something. For example, if someone made a mistake and you called them out on it, they might get rather 'hot under the collar'.

Egypt's Democratic Generation Party Evaluates 84 Candidates Ahead of Parliamentary Vote

Egypt's Democratic Generation Party has begun early preparations for the country's next parliamentary elections, with 84 potential candidates from across the country currently under evaluation, a senior party official said on Wednesday. Mahmoud Ezz, assistant secretary-general of the party and head of its central elections committee, said the screening process began nearly three months ago, shortly after he was appointed to lead the committee. 'The party is working according to a well-structured plan to select the most qualified individuals to represent us in various constituencies,' Ezz said. 'We are currently reviewing 84 applications, and each one is being examined closely to ensure that only the most competent candidates move forward.' He said the selection criteria include a candidate's visible and consistent presence within their electoral district, engagement in public and community affairs, and a solid professional and academic background. Political and social experience also plays a key role in the evaluation. Ezz stressed that the party is focused on endorsing candidates capable of effective parliamentary participation, contributing to the drafting of legislation, and advocating for citizens' concerns at the national level. 'We want our candidates to reflect the aspirations of the people and to earn their trust through performance, not just promises,' Ezz said. The Egyptian government has not yet announced a date for the upcoming parliamentary elections. The Democratic Generation Party is expected to finalize its list of candidates once the review process is complete.

Threatened sea turtle treated, released into wild

Coinciding with Egypt's celebrations of World Wildlife Day, celebrated on 3 March, the Egyptian Ministry of Environment's Ashtoum al-Gamil Reserve, released the green turtle 'Ezz' into the wild. Ezz belongs to the green sea turtles threatened with extinction. It had been found in a fish market in the Suez Canal city of Ismailiya by a young man name Ezz who rescued it and handed it over to the local wildlife authorities; the turtle was named Ezz after him. The turtle was moved to Ashtoum al-Gamil reserve where it was examined, given the proper care, and its ability to continue living in its natural habitat ensured. In light of the theme of World Wildlife Day this year, 'Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet', Yasmine Fuad, Minister of Environment said that protecting wildlife and biodiversity is one of the most important strategic goals of the Ministry of Environment. She stressed that the Ministry is striving to support environmental investment and involve the private sector and youth in protection efforts. The Minister of Environment explained that World Wildlife Day represents a real opportunity to celebrate the diversity and richness of wildlife, increase awareness of their worth, and preserve their sustainability. It was in December 2013 that the United Nations General Assembly declared 3 March as World Wildlife Day. The date coincides with the day on which the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) was adopted in 1973, which plays an important role in ensuring that international trade does not pose a threat to the survival of these species of wild animals and plants.
