Eredivisie End of Season Review: FC Groningen
Final Position: 13th Overview: FC Groningen returned to the Eredivisie and remained in the league with relative ease. At times, they even looked set to challenge for a play-off position before ultimately running out of gas in the latter part of the campaign. Dick Lukkien and co have something to build on for next season and with a few additions could be challenging for a top eight finish. They also managed to achieve their goals this season with a squad that boasts a number of young talents. Player of the season: Stije Resink Stije Resink is one of those young talents. The 21-year-old had a stellar season in the Eredivisie for the side, with six goals and two assists in 27 games following his summer move from Almere City. The midfielder was strong in breaking up the play in central areas, finishing the season with a 67% tackle success rate and winning 60% of his duels. In the air, Resink was also strong, winning 64% of his aerial battles. Groningen have him under contract until 2028 and for just €700k, he was certainly a bargain this season. Young Player of the Season: Luciano Valente Antother of the sides young talents was Luciano Valente. The 21-year-old attacking midfielder/winger scored twice and grabbed a club high eight assists this season. He followed up a strong showing in the second tier last year, where he ended with eigth goals and eight assists in 39 games. The club will hope he can progress again after his successful Eredivisie campaign. Summer needs: Like many clubs in the Eredivisie, Groningen could do with finding a striker. Resink and Thom van Bergen and Jorg Schreuders all finished joint top scorers for the club in the league this season with just five goals. Overall the side scored 40 in 34 games. If they can find a reliable goal scorer next season that could help them push for a European play-off spot. Grade: A GBeNeFN | Ben Jackson

Feyenoord chase Valente: Agent provides clarity on Groningen youngster's future
Feyenoord are hopeful of signing Luciano Valente from FC Groningen this summer. The midfielder has already visited the club, and the Rotterdammers have reportedly made an offer of four million euros, which can increase to five million via bonuses. Agent Melvyn Wolthers told Dagblad van het Noorden extensively about the interests, the career path that Valente has in mind, and what is important to the player. Advertisement 'There is quite a bit of interest,' Wolthers began. 'We are very selective in that. Everything has to be focused on Luciano's development. So we don't just talk to any club. Moreover, everything is done in good consultation with FC Groningen director Frank van Mosselveld.' In the Netherlands, PSV and FC Twente have registered interest in the player, while Ajax made cautious inquiries and Feyenoord have already spoken to the player. 'Football is about momentum, and for Luciano, it is now time to take a step up. He has that intention. However difficult, because his heart is green and white.' According to Wolthers, several interested clubs have been rejected in recent years. 'Luciano could earn a lot of money, but that is not his goal. His ultimate goal is to play in a World Cup. With that in mind, we are looking at what is a logical step in his career. A step in which playing time is very important.' Advertisement 'I will not comment on the (Feyenoord) rumours, but suppose there is a bid, then it would be logical to talk to each other. There are several interested parties, but it is very simple: Luciano goes to the club he wants to go to. No club is currently in pole position. What we take into account is that it must also be good for FC Groningen, because that club has always been good to him.' The young player's direction is clear, according to Wolthers. 'For Luciano, it is not about the money, but about the plan. Luciano is a young boy who has to hold his own in the football jungle. Different laws apply at top clubs, he gets a different salary. Young guys can be sensitive to that.' What is also important is in what capacity a club wants him and how they plan to use him. 'Luciano thinks it is important that he is seen as a versatile midfielder,' says Wolthers. 'Luciano must be able to grow at his new club. As a footballer and as a person. Advertisement 'The whole picture must be right. Luciano is not going to take a step just to take a step. That means that he can also stay at FC Groningen, because that is a fantastic club. What we want to know is whether he is getting good guidance. Because every club calls itself a family club, but they are not all. What we think is important is how a club deals with a player who is in a slump, or when he is not fit, while he lives in a big city with all the temptations that entails.' GBeNeFN | Max Bradfield

Morocco Lands New Prodigy from Netherlands Ahead of U17 AFCON
Morocco has just secured a major talent ahead of the U17 Africa Cup of Nations. Marouane Bakkour, a rising star at Dutch side FC Groningen, has chosen to represent Morocco over the Netherlands. Born to a Moroccan father and a Surinamese mother of Indonesian descent, Bakkour can play in different positions across central midfield. The 17-year-old ditched the Netherlands just months after wearing their shirt, choosing to play for Morocco instead. The midfield starlet was approached by Moroccan officials who were quick to tap into his potential. Bakkour is now set to join Morocco's U17 squad for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which kicks off next month in Morocco from March 20 to April 19. The Moroccan team will face Uganda, Tanzania, and Zambia in the group stage. The top two teams from each group go straight to the quarter-finals and will also book a ticket for the FIFA U17 Qatar World Cup to be held from November 5 to 27, 2025. But with the U17 AFCON just around the corner, Morocco will host a friendly tournament from February 18-22, featuring Egypt, Senegal, and Zambia. This will be the final test for the young squad before they step into the continental competition. The Moroccan Football Federation has been ramping up efforts in recent months to bring in talent from abroad, and Bakkour is one of the latest successes.
