Chipola rolls into postseason with another Panhandle title
MARIANNA, Fla. (WMBB) – The Chipola Men's Basketball team has won its fifth consecutive Panhandle Conference title and is looking for its fourth state championship in five years. The Indians (24-6) are the No. 11 ranked team in the NJCAA and No. 2 in the FCSAA heading into the postseason. Chipola's strength this season, like every year in the Donnie Tyndal coaching era, is defense. The Indians have only allowed 70 points in three games this season and have forced opponents into scoring less than 60 in more than half of their matchups. Coach Tyndall says there is still a lot of work to do on offense and that there is even room for improvement on defense. 'My first three years, we were number one in the country and defense,' Tyndall said. 'Last year we dropped the number two, so I wasn't real happy about that. And so currently, we're sitting at number two and I'm constantly challenging my team, and berating them if you will, about how we're not good enough defensively. We're number two in the country. My first three teams were number one.' In addition to five straight Panhandle Conference titles, Chipola has won three out of the past four FCSAA Region VIII Championships before heading to nationals. Coach Tyndall said they want to defend their state crown in Raider Arena in Niceville but it will not be an easy task. 'We understand it could be one and done,' Tyndall said. 'I mean, that's just how good this state tournament is going to be. We've had, I believe, six or seven teams in our region that have been nationally ranked this season. So it's going to be it's going to be a physical, hard-fought affair no matter who you play.' The Indians should be the one or two seed at the state tournament. The regional bracket will be released on Friday, March 7. Chipola's quarterfinal game will be on March 13. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
