Green Key drives certified, measurable hotel sustainability

At the FEE International Conference on Crete, Joaquin Arturo Diaz Rios discusses Green Key's sustainability roadmap, emphasizing certification, stakeholder accountability, and the urgent need for measurable, provable green practices. REPORT – Crete: The Green Key sustainability roadmap is shaping the future of the global hospitality sector, as emphasized by Joaquin Arturo Diaz Rios, CEO of FEE Mexico during the International Conference of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) on Crete, Greece. Diaz Rios highlighted that strengthening Green Key's evaluation tools is essential to accurately measure the environmental impact of hotel operations. Simply claiming to be 'green' is no longer sufficient — properties must demonstrate their sustainability through rigorous internal and external assessments, providing tangible proof to consumers and stakeholders alike. Green Key's sustainability roadmap stresses that hotel operators must first become conscious of their impact, take responsibility, and then take action to minimize negative effects. This involves reducing water and energy consumption, managing waste effectively, and involving not just hotel staff but also guests — whether they are visiting for leisure or business. All stakeholders in the hotel ecosystem share this responsibility. Moving toward a sustainable future requires shifting away from viewing sustainability as a romantic ideal; it is, in fact, an operational obligation. Looking ahead, Diaz Rios noted that regulatory frameworks like the EU Green Claims Directive are driving the hospitality sector toward verified sustainability. Within the next five years, he predicts that major hotel chains and independent properties alike will be compelled to adopt new sustainability-focused operational models. This shift is not merely regulatory — it is also a response to rising consumer demand. Guests increasingly ask for and expect verified, certified green practices, and platforms like now visibly display which hotels are undergoing continuous sustainability evaluations. Diaz Rios also reflected on the Mexican context, where the majority of inbound travelers come from the United States. While awareness levels remain uneven across both international and domestic travelers, Green Key's sustainability roadmap includes raising awareness as a foundational step. As part of the Foundation for Environmental Education, Green Key's mission extends beyond certification — it is about fostering environmental consciousness and spreading the sustainability message across all market segments. As Diaz Rios emphasized, raising awareness is the critical starting point for any meaningful shift toward sustainable practices in hospitality. Only by aligning operational accountability, certification, and consumer expectations can the industry deliver on its sustainability promises.

Pembrokeshire beaches best in Wales with 17 Coast Awards

County scoops highest number of accolades in national environmental honours PEMBROKESHIRE has been officially named home to the best beaches in Wales, securing a record-breaking 17 Wales Coast Awards in 2025—more than any other part of the country. The results, released today (Thursday) by environmental charity Keep Wales Tidy, recognise coastal locations across Wales for exceptional environmental standards, excellent water quality, and a commitment to education and sustainability. Out of the 49 beaches honoured across Wales, Pembrokeshire claimed 10 of the 21 Blue Flag Awards, including well-known locations such as Tenby South and North, Poppit Sands, Broad Haven (North), Newgale, Dale, Whitesands and Coppet Hall. Saundersfoot and Tenby Castle beaches are also celebrating their 25th consecutive year holding Blue Flag status—an international mark of environmental quality administered by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE). All of Pembrokeshire's Blue Flag beaches have successfully retained their awards from last year. In addition to its Blue Flag successes, Pembrokeshire also leads Wales in the number of Green Coast Awards, which are given to more remote, unspoilt beaches with high environmental standards. Of the 13 Green Coast Awards presented this year, seven went to Pembrokeshire beaches: Aberiddy, Freshwater East, Manorbier, Penally, Caerfai, Druidstone and West Angle Bay. The Green Coast Award celebrates lesser-known, 'hidden gem' beaches that offer natural beauty alongside excellent water quality and environmental care. Keep Wales Tidy has managed the Wales Coast Awards for over 20 years. The awards play a vital role in protecting the Welsh marine environment and are internationally recognised as a symbol of quality. To qualify, beaches must meet rigorous criteria on water quality, public information, environmental education, safety, and site management. In addition to the Blue Flag and Green Coast accolades, 15 beaches across Wales earned the Seaside Award—a UK-only honour that signifies clean, attractive, and well-managed stretches of coastline. This year's Seaside Award winners include Aberystwyth South and North, New Quay Harbour, Aberavon in Neath Port Talbot, and Whitmore Bay and Jackson's Bay in Barry Island. Owen Derbyshire, Chief Executive of Keep Wales Tidy, praised Pembrokeshire's outstanding performance. 'The Wales Coast Awards are a fantastic celebration of Wales' beautiful and diverse coastline,' he said. 'They are testament to the huge effort of staff and volunteers at sites across Wales. Thank you to everyone who works so hard to protect and preserve our natural landscape in the face of increasingly challenging circumstances.' Cllr Rhys Sinnett, Cabinet Member for Residents' Services at Pembrokeshire County Council, said: 'We are incredibly proud to once again receive the highest number of Wales Coast Awards. Pembrokeshire is rightly recognised as being home to some of the world's best beaches, but it takes hard work and year-round commitment to maintain these standards and secure prestigious awards like the Blue Flag and Green Coast.' 'We look forward to welcoming both residents and visitors to our outstanding beaches this summer.' A full list of this year's award-winning beaches is available on the Keep Wales Tidy website.

Govt to spend Rs 11cr on Chandipur beach devpt to get Blue Flag tag

1 2 3 Bhubaneswar: State govt has started the process to get 'Blue Flag' status for Chandipur beach in Balasore district. The govt has decided to spend Rs 11 crore in phases for beachfront development required for getting the tag. Deputy chief minister Pravati Parida, who also holds the tourism portfolio, said Chandipur beach has immense tourism potential. "Chandipur is one of the most beautiful beaches in Odisha, with a unique natural phenomenon where the sea recedes up to 5 km during low tide, making it a site of natural wonder. Besides, with so many islands in the vicinity, Balasore will be a focus area to draw global tourists to our state. With proper investment and amenities, the beach could become a major tourist attraction in India," Parida said. Copenhagen-based Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) has granted 'Blue Flag' status to 12 beaches in the country, including Golden Beach in Puri. FEE prescribes 33 sets of guidelines on cleanliness, eco-friendly environment, and tourist-friendly amenities for being eligible to get the 'Blue Flag' tag. Parida also shared plans to develop Chandipur as a popular wedding destination. "State govt will facilitate developments, including setting up shops and business establishments in the area, to make it a preferred tourist as well as a wedding destination," she said. The govt has approved Rs 2 crore out of a planned Rs 11 crore to the Balasore district authorities for preliminary development work. "Apart from obtaining the Blue Flag certification, which would classify it as a world-class, ecologically-friendly hotspot, the govt has plans to develop water sports, and an eco-retreat camp to attract tourists," she said. State govt has plans to develop other beaches like Niladri beach in Puri, Gopalpur and Pati-Sonapur beaches in Ganjam, and Talasari-Udaypur in Balasore. Other Blue Flag beaches in the country are Shivrajpur beach in Gujarat, Kappad beach in Kerala, Ghoghla beach in Diu, Radhanagar beach in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Kasarkod and Padubidri beaches in Karnataka, Rushikonda beach in Andhra Pradesh, Kovalam beach in Tamil Nadu, Eden beach in Puducherry, Minicoy Thundi, and Kadmat beach in Lakshadweep.
