North Bay Haven wins second region title in three years
PANAMA CITY, Fla. (WMBB) – The North Bay Haven boys tennis team defeated South Walton 4-1 at home Thursday afternoon, winning the Class 2A Region 1 Championship. It was the second region title for the Buccaneers in three seasons and the second in program history. North Bay Haven will be underdogs at the FHSAA State Championships but senior Nicolas Silva says they're going to give it their best shot. 'I'm never counting anything out,' Silva said. 'I mean, it's not about who the bigger school is or who the best players are, it's about who's playing the best on that day and who's doing their best on that day. Earnest becomes most decorated athlete in Bozeman history
SAND HILLS, Fla. (WMBB) – Bozeman senior weightlifter, Evan Earnest won two gold medals at the FHSAA State Championships, wrapping up his high school career with a school record three state titles. Earnest took gold in both the Olympic and Traditional events, following behind his gold medal in traditional in 2024. Earnest compiled a 520 lb. total for Olympic and a 640 lb. total for Traditional (bench press and clean and jerk) which was just shy of the state record he was aiming for. He says in a couple years his brother might come behind him and break his records. 'I think it's pretty cool,' Earnest said. 'I'm happy to be able to do that and hopefully inspire some people to also join weightlifting and do good at weightlifting. My little brother, Ethan is able to do the same thing. He's doing weightlifting along with me. So, you'll probably be interviewing him within the next couple of years.' Mater Lakes secures first regional wrestling title; South Dade and Somerset also prevail
Thirteen years ago, Mater Lakes Academy began the journey of building a boys' wrestling program. After cruising to the Region 4-1A championship at Cardinal Gibbons High on Saturday, the Bears can no longer be underestimated. A year after sending nine wrestlers to the Class 1A state tournament in Kissimmee, Mater Lakes will send 12 next week. They scored 302 points to win the school's first regional title, distancing themselves from runner-up Cardinal Gibbons' 235 points. 'This feels great, especially with the way we did it,' Mater Lakes coach Brandon Neifeld said. 'We dominated and had a couple of upsets in the finals. Our guys wrestled amazingly. Now we need to carry this momentum to next week.' The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the FHSAA State Championships on Mar. 6-8 at Silvers Spurs Arena in Kissimmee. The highlight of the Bears' successful afternoon came in the 190-pound championship match between Damian Soto of Mater Lakes and undefeated and defending state champ Peter Mocco of Cardinal Gibbons. Soto, second at 215 in last years state tourney, led 5-1 in the first period and 6-1 entering the third period. Mocco rallied, sending the match into overtime at 10-10 with a take down as time expired. Soto won the match in just seconds in overtime for a 13-10 victory. 'We had a game plan and working on a few things heading into that match,' Neifeld said. 'He pulled it out in what was an awesome match.' Mocco (45-1), a winner at 190 pounds while at Coral Springs Charter in 2024 will look to defend his title this year as a freshman at Cardinal Gibbons. His brother Michael Mocco (39-0), a junior at Cardinal Gibbons, is the defending Class 1A champion at 215 pounds. He advanced for the opportunity to defend his title. 'There were a lot of positives and negatives today,' Gibbons coach Jamel Morris said. 'We have guys that are young and are now state qualifiers and guys that have been to state. We're zero and zero next week. We'll make some adjustments and be ready.' Mater Lakes is seeking its first team championship after finishing as runner-up to Somerset (Pembroke Pines) last year. The Bears have had a strong season, winning the Class 1A state duals championship in January over St. John Neumann that also has a district and regional title. RESULTS Team scores (Top 5): 1. Chipley's Renfro becomes program's first state champ
CHIPLEY, Fla. (WMBB) – Chipley High School senior weightlifter, Jaci Renfro took home gold at the FHSAA State Championships, becoming the first state champ in program history. Renfro won the 129-pound weight class in the Olympic event by lifting a total of 345 pounds. She medaled at State in both her sophomore and junior seasons but this was her first gold medal and she says it was the perfect way to end her high school weightlifting career. 'After the past three years, I got silver my second year and bronze my third year, so it feels good to get first place for my last,' Renfro said. 'I was very joyful but I was also crying because it was like a sad moment and a happy one at the same time. For it to be my last one and hit that lift, I couldn't have done it without God.' Renfro says she does not plan to compete in college but she will compete at USA Nationals this summer, trying to improve upon her third-place finish in 2024. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
