Mater Lakes secures first regional wrestling title; South Dade and Somerset also prevail

Miami Herald02-03-2025

Thirteen years ago, Mater Lakes Academy began the journey of building a boys' wrestling program.
After cruising to the Region 4-1A championship at Cardinal Gibbons High on Saturday, the Bears can no longer be underestimated.
A year after sending nine wrestlers to the Class 1A state tournament in Kissimmee, Mater Lakes will send 12 next week. They scored 302 points to win the school's first regional title, distancing themselves from runner-up Cardinal Gibbons' 235 points.
'This feels great, especially with the way we did it,' Mater Lakes coach Brandon Neifeld said. 'We dominated and had a couple of upsets in the finals. Our guys wrestled amazingly. Now we need to carry this momentum to next week.'
The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to the FHSAA State Championships on Mar. 6-8 at Silvers Spurs Arena in Kissimmee.
The highlight of the Bears' successful afternoon came in the 190-pound championship match between Damian Soto of Mater Lakes and undefeated and defending state champ Peter Mocco of Cardinal Gibbons.
Soto, second at 215 in last years state tourney, led 5-1 in the first period and 6-1 entering the third period. Mocco rallied, sending the match into overtime at 10-10 with a take down as time expired. Soto won the match in just seconds in overtime for a 13-10 victory.
'We had a game plan and working on a few things heading into that match,' Neifeld said. 'He pulled it out in what was an awesome match.'
Mocco (45-1), a winner at 190 pounds while at Coral Springs Charter in 2024 will look to defend his title this year as a freshman at Cardinal Gibbons.
His brother Michael Mocco (39-0), a junior at Cardinal Gibbons, is the defending Class 1A champion at 215 pounds. He advanced for the opportunity to defend his title.
'There were a lot of positives and negatives today,' Gibbons coach Jamel Morris said. 'We have guys that are young and are now state qualifiers and guys that have been to state. We're zero and zero next week. We'll make some adjustments and be ready.'
Mater Lakes is seeking its first team championship after finishing as runner-up to Somerset (Pembroke Pines) last year.
The Bears have had a strong season, winning the Class 1A state duals championship in January over St. John Neumann that also has a district and regional title.

Poplar Springs Shootout provides local teams a valuable tune-up

GRACEVILLE, Fla. (WMBB) — Several local girls basketball teams tipped off their summer seasons this week at the annual Poplar Springs Shootout, using the three-day event not just for competition, but for growth, chemistry and motivation. Each team entered with its own goals, from rebuilding rosters to preparing for championship runs. For Holmes County, last season's Class 1A state runners-up, the mission is clear, finish what they started. 'I want people to say this is the team to beat this year,' rising sophomore Jacee Bowers said. 'It's a privilege. People walk in the gym and know this is the team to beat, that feels good. 'We're coming in hard, showing up every day,' rising senior Ava Jones said. 'As seniors, it's exciting. We're ready to take on the role, and our goal is to get to that last game of the season and win it all.' The Arnold Lady Marlins celebrated a key return as rising senior Abby Long stepped back onto the court following a nine-month recovery from a torn ACL. 'Abby's worked really hard at rehab, and she's going to be a big part of our team,' Arnold Head Coach David Pleat said. 'It takes a lot of courage and commitment to come back from an ACL injury. You really admire them for that.' Meanwhile, the Mosley Dolphins entered the tournament with just one senior, giving younger players an early opportunity to embrace leadership roles. 'Tournaments like this help us build as a team,' rising sophomore Faith Alvarado said. 'We learn how to play together and learn each other on the court. It's been really good all around.' The host team, the Poplar Springs Lady Atomics, used the event to introduce their new head coach, JJ Price. 'I officially start July 1, but with the camp and this tournament going on, I've basically been here since the last week of May,' Price said. 'It's been a great chance to get to know the girls and start preparing.' Holmes County finished the tournament undefeated at 7-0. First-year head coach Brandon French said they aren't slowing down anytime soon. 'We're going to keep playing,' French said. 'A lot of these young guys didn't get a ton of game experience last year, so we're getting in as many games as we can this summer. We're only a few weeks in, but everybody's stepping into their roles really well.' Whether rebuilding or returning with veteran talent, every team left Poplar Springs with more experience, and a better understanding of what it takes to win. The three-day event began on Monday, continued Tuesday, and wrapped up on Thursday evening. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Yankees will look different in first rematch with Dodgers since World Series loss

Yankees will look different in first rematch with Dodgers since World Series loss The last time the Yankees were at Dodger Stadium, they lost Game 2 of the 2024 World Series, 4-2. The defeat, which featured a gem from the Dodgers' Yoshinobu Yamamoto, a clunker from Carlos Rodón and a home run from Juan Soto, put the Yankees in a 2-0 hole in the Fall Classic. They went on to lose their first World Series since 2009 in five games in sloppy fashion, sparking an offseason of trash talk from the backend of Los Angeles' roster as the Bombers rebuilt their own. Advertisement 'I don't like hearing that,' Aaron Boone said of the jabs this spring, 'but the reality is we didn't play our best in the series and they won. So they have that right to say whatever. Hopefully we're in that position this year and handle things with a little more class.' With the playoffs still months away, the stakes won't be as high when the first-place clubs begin a three-game series in L.A. on Friday. Still, the Yankees, fresh off a sweep over the Angels after a 1-0 win on Wednesday, would love to extract some regular season revenge with a group that looks noticeably different than the one that the Dodgers knocked down on baseball's biggest stage. Gone is Soto, who spurned the Yankees – and lightly flirted with the Dodgers – before signing a record-setting contract with the Mets. The Yankees also moved on from Gleyber Torres, Anthony Rizzo, Alex Verdugo and Nestor Cortes, who all played large – if not necessarily successful – parts in the 2024 World Series. Giancarlo Stanton, meanwhile, has yet to play this season due to tennis elbow injuries after terrorizing his hometown Dodgers and other playoff opponents last October. The Yankees will also be without Gerrit Cole, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Luis Gil, Oswaldo Cabrera and Fernando Cruz, among others, this weekend. Advertisement After losing the Soto sweepstakes, the Yankees pivoted to Max Fried, Devin Williams, Paul Goldschmidt and Cody Bellinger. Fried, the biggest and first splash following Soto's departure, has been sensational, recording a league-best 1.29 ERA over 11 starts and leading the Yankees' rotation with Cole sidelined by Tommy John surgery. A childhood Dodgers fan who went to high school in L.A., Fried is scheduled to start the first game of the series. Williams, meanwhile, has had a bumpy tenure in New York thus far. Initially under the impression he'd be traded to the Dodgers over the winter, the reliever started the season as the Yankees' closer, only to pitch his way out of the role. Williams has mostly been effective since, though he wobbled his way through his first save opportunity in a month on Tuesday in Anaheim. Goldschmidt, 37 and coming off the worst year of his career, has been a bargain for the Yankees, hitting .347 with five home runs and 27 RBI while stabilizing first base. Meanwhile, Bellinger, who won an MVP Award with the Dodgers in 2019, has found his footing after a rocky start, hitting .318 with five homers and 16 RBI this month. Advertisement Together, the two veterans have helped lengthen a post-Soto lineup that is also now reliant on – and getting significant contributions from – youngsters Ben Rice and Jasson Domínguez. Of course, Aaron Judge's continued otherworldly performance has also helped the Yankees put together one of baseball's best offenses. That lineup will go up against a pitching staff that is not at full strength, as L.A. starters Tyler Glasnow, Roki Sasaki and Blake Snell – the latter two being of interest to the Yankees this past offseason – are on the injured list. The Dodgers' bullpen is also missing Kirby Yates, Evan Phillips, Michael Kopech, Brusdar Graterol and Blake Treinen. They've had their own closing issues, too, as Tanner Scott, signed to a four-year, $72 million deal over the winter, has allowed nine earned runs over his last five appearances. With the Dodgers down more than a few pitchers, Tony Gonsolin, Landon Knack and Yamamoto – pitching like an early Cy Young contender – are slated to start in the series. Advertisement Fried, also making an early bid for pitching's most prestigious hardware, will be followed by red-hot rookie Will Warren. The Yankees have yet to announce their Sunday starter, though their options are Rodón, pitching like an All-Star and looking for redemption at Chavez Ravine, or ex-Dodger Ryan Yarbrough, a swingman who has been a revelation for the Yankees' rotation recently. The Dodgers also have one of MLB's better offenses. Like the Yankees, they rank in the top-three in runs, home runs, wRC+ and fWAR.

Peterson pitches 1st complete game as Mets get 2 homers from Nimmo and 1 from Soto to beat Nats 5-0

NEW YORK (AP) — David Peterson pitched a six-hitter for the first nine-inning complete game of his professional career, and the New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 5-0 on Wednesday night for their fifth straight win. Brandon Nimmo homered twice and Juan Soto went deep against his former team for the second consecutive night. Pete Alonso put the Mets ahead in the first inning with his major league-high 63rd RBI, his 20th in the past 10 games. NL East-leading New York moved a season-best 20 games over .500 at 44-24. Peterson (5-2) won his third decision in a row, striking out six and walking none in a game that took just 2 hours, 16 minutes. He threw 106 pitches and lowered his ERA to 2.49. Mets center fielder Tyrone Taylor threw out Luis García Jr. trying to score from second in the eighth on Jacob Young's sharp single. Peterson's only prior professional complete game was a four-hitter in a rain-shorted, five-inning loss to Atlanta on April 28, 2023. His previous nine-inning complete game came in college, a four-hit shutout for Oregon against Arizona State on April 28, 2017. New York's previous complete game was a four-hit shutout by Luis Severino against Miami last Aug. 17. Peterson pitched the seventh shutout and 14th complete game in the major leagues this season. Washington has lost four straight and seven of nine. Soto, who played for the Nationals from 2018 until he was traded to San Diego in August 2022, followed Francisco Lindor's double off Jake Irvin (5-3) with his 13th homer, a two-run drive on a hanging curve in the third. Nimmo homered in the fifth off Irvin and in the seventh against Jackson Rutledge for his eighth career multihomer game. Irvin allowed four runs, five hits and three walks in five innings. He has a 10.29 ERA in the first inning this year and has given up 13 homers in 13 starts. Soto's drive over the right-field fence was caught on the fly by a young fan wearing a baseball glove. Key stat Alonso tied for the most RBIs by a Mets player in a 10-game span during a single season. He matched Mike Piazza (1999 and 2000), Yoenis Céspedes (2016) and Lindor (2022). Up next ___
