USWNT appoints Tottenham assistant Vicky Jepson as under-20 head coach
Tottenham Hotspur assistant Vicky Jepson will leave the Women's Super League club at the end of the season to become head coach of the United States Under-20 women's national team. Jepson joined Spurs from Liverpool in 2021 as assistant to Rehanne Skinner. Following the sacking of Skinner in March 2023, Jepson took interim charge of Spurs for the remainder of the season, helping the club to survival in the WSL. Advertisement The 38-year-old returned to an assistant role upon the appointment of Robert Vilahamn as Spurs' head coach in July 2023, and was a part of the coaching team which led the north London club to its maiden Women's FA Cup final in 2024. Jepson earned her UEFA A License in June 2024. 'It's hard leaving Tottenham Hotspur after four memorable years at the club, but I'm moving on to work for the most progressive organization in the world for women's football,' Jepson said in a statement published Friday. 'Working alongside the incredible leadership of Tracey, (U.S. Soccer Sporting Director) Matt Crocker and of course a serial winner in Emma Hayes is an amazing opportunity. I can't wait to get started.' Jepson will lead the U.S. side ahead of preparations for the 2025 Concacaf Women's U-20 Championship in Costa Rica, which determines qualification for the 2026 FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup in Poland. Hayes has spoken about the importance of the USWNT's youth structure since her appointment in 2024, emphasising the value of repeating January's inaugural Futures Camp to develop a pathway into the senior team, and the necessity for a core group of players to play regularly together from youth level. The U.S. team finished third at the Women's U20 World Cup in 2024 under Tracey Kevins, the U.S. Soccer Head of Development for the Women's and Girls. Kevins said Jepson brings a 'wealth of experience, tactical knowledge and a proven track record of developing talent for the highest levels'. 'Her leadership will be instrumental in driving our U-20 program, which serves as a crucial step in our National Team pathway,' Kevins added. Jepson spent over a decade in Liverpool's coaching set-up and was appointed head coach in 2018. She was in charge during a particular period of under investment for the women's team as the club were relegated from the WSL in 2019-20 on a points-per-game basis following the curtailment of the season due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Advertisement Jepson previously worked in a national team set-up with England as head coach of the under-17 side. 'I'm passionate about developing this next generation and I look forward to providing them with challenging and valuable experiences to help them grow as people and players,' Jepson added. 'There is such a rich pool of talent in the USA and I'm so proud to be part of the players' journey to senior international football.'
