Ashoka University professor row: Supreme Court questions Haryana SIT over FIRs against Ali Khan Mahmudabad; relaxes bail conditions
NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday pulled up the Haryana Special Investigation Team (SIT) for allegedly expanding the scope of its probe against Ashoka University professor Ali Khan Mahmudabad, who is facing two FIRs for online posts during Operation Sindoor . A bench led by Justices Surya Kant and Dipankar Datta asked the SIT to confine its investigation strictly to the two FIRs registered against the professor and complete the probe within four weeks. "Do not try to expand the scope of the FIRs. SIT is free to form its opinion, but do not deviate from the task," the bench said. The court also questioned the SIT's decision to seize Mahmudabad's electronic devices, remarking that the agency appeared to have 'misdirected itself.' It further instructed the SIT to submit a copy of its investigation report after filing it before the jurisdictional court. In a relief to Mahmudabad, the apex court relaxed one of his bail conditions, allowing him to write articles and share opinions as long as they do not relate to matters that are sub judice or under investigation in the two FIRs. 'He can write anything except on the specific matters mentioned in the FIRs,' the court said. This comes weeks after the court extended Mahmudabad's interim bail till the third week of July, while maintaining a gag order on writing about the issues linked to the FIRs. At the May 29 hearing, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Mahmudabad, had pleaded for the gag order to be lifted, saying, 'He is an Oxford-educated mature person. He knows where he landed because of the writings. I am beseeching you to delete the condition. ' The court, however, had declined the request at the time, stating it did not want a 'parallel commentary' on the investigation. Mahmudabad was arrested earlier this year for allegedly posting objectionable content on social media related to Operation Sindoor, which led to the registration of two FIRs against him. The Haryana SIT comprises three senior IPS officers: ADGP Mamta Singh, SP Karnal Ganga Ram Punia, and SP STF (Gurgaon) Vikrant Bhushan.

ED Raids Seven Locations In Haryana In 'Donkey Route' Human Trafficking Case
Last Updated: According to officials quoted by ANI, the searches, led by ED's Jalandhar Zonal Office, were carried out in the districts of Mansa, Kurukshetra, and Karnal. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday conducted fresh raids at seven locations across Haryana in connection with the high-profile 'Donkey Route' human trafficking case, ANI reported. The case pertains to the deportation of illegal immigrants from the United States in February 2025. The latest action is part of a wider crackdown on a network of travel and visa agents accused of facilitating perilous, unauthorised migration. According to officials quoted by ANI, the searches, led by ED's Jalandhar Zonal Office, were carried out in the districts of Mansa, Kurukshetra, and Karnal. These raids follow a previous operation on July 9, when ED raided 11 premises in Punjab and Haryana, including Amritsar, Sangrur, Patiala, Moga, Ambala, Kurukshetra, and Karnal. 'Inputs gathered show that second-leg persons and human traffickers were used to arrange illegal route resources outside India in connivance with 'donkers' (human trafficking conduits)," an ED official told ANI. The investigation under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) was initiated based on 17 FIRs registered in Punjab and Haryana. The complaints were filed against travel agents and middlemen who allegedly defrauded individuals seeking to migrate to the US. 'These agents reportedly lured people with promises of legal travel arrangements but instead trafficked them through dangerous, illegal routes known as the Donkey Route," said another official quoted by ANI. Statements from several deported migrants have already been recorded, enabling investigators to identify additional suspects. The ED is currently searching its premises. Officials believe the case sheds light on a deeply entrenched transnational trafficking network masquerading as legitimate immigration assistance. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. High court adjourns May 9 bail hearing
The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday accepted the prosecution's request for granting an opportunity for submitting a reply regarding bail pleas filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Ijaz Chaudhry in four cases registered against him over the May 9 riots. The court adjourned the hearing of the bail applications till Thursday. An LHC division bench headed by Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi heard the bail applications. The prosecution sought time for submitting the reply before the court. Petitioner Ijaz Chaudhry contended his bail application that he had nothing to do with the allegations levelled in the first information reports (FIRs). He alleged that he had been implicated in forged and frivolous cases that were politically motivated. He stated that nothing was available on record to establish his nexus with the offences portrayed in the FIRs. He requested the court to grant him bail.
