FITURNEXT: How tourism can contribute to responsible water management

FITURNEXT 2026 invites tourism initiatives promoting responsible water use, awarding impactful, replicable projects that support sustainable industry practices globally. MADRID – FITUR is looking for good tourism practices for the seventh edition of the FITURNEXT Observatory, the initiative to promote sustainable and regenerative tourism. The 2026 Challenge is framed around how tourism can contribute to efficient and responsible water management, aligned with various United Nations Sustainable Development Goals that aim to promote the right to clean and healthy water, health and wellbeing, climate action and responsible production and consumption. Any initiative that promotes a balance between water management and tourism and water sustainability can sign up until 31 August. The selected projects, following the criteria of a replicability barometer and an impact barometer, will be awarded during the International Tourism Trade Fair (FITUR) in January 2026. F acts and the importance of efficient water management in tourism In many countries, water pollution is a challenge for human and environmental health. According to UN data, today more than one billion people still lack access to safe drinking water and only 0.5% of the world's water is usable and accessible freshwater. The global urban population facing water scarcity is expected to double from 930 million in 2016 to 1700-2400 million people in 2050, leading to an imminent risk of aglobal water crisis. Likewise, water consumption is much higher in tourist areas: an average resident consumes 127 litres per day, while a tourist consumes between 450 and 800 litres per day. To address this situation, FITURNEXT is focusing its next edition on researching tourism initiatives that contribute to responsible water consumption and reduce water stress. The three categories for awarding initiatives The call is open to any company, public administration, organisation or project that promotes sustainable water use in the tourism sector and seeks to make visible and inspire other destinations that want to improve their relationship with water resources with their replicable models. Initiatives can be entered in three categories: Destinations and other territories: Aimed at public administrations and territorial bodies to implement innovative strategies in the sustainable management of the water cycle. HORECA and transport sector: Aimed at accommodation, catering and transport companies that apply solutions to optimise the use of water in their tourism services. Other agents in the tourism value chain: For travel agencies, operators, tourism experience companies and other entities with tools or initiatives that promote the responsible use of water in the industry. Thus, initiatives that fit into one of these categories have the opportunity to form part of the FITURNEXT Observatory and be recognised as one of the sector's best practices. The winning and finalist projects will participate in the activities that will take place at the FITUR 2026 stand and in subsequent actions, benefiting from the visibility provided by being part of the FITURNEXT community, thanks to its impact on the media and the different synergies generated among its participants.

Ministry of Heritage and Tourism launches promotional plan for 2025

Muscat:The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism continues to enhance its presence in global markets in 2025 with a promotional plan to participate in major international tourism exhibitions and organize mobile workshops in target markets. These efforts aim to promote Oman as a distinguished tourist destination, highlighting its cultural and heritage attractions, and showcasing the tourism packages and offers provided by companies in the tourism sector. Haitham bin Mohammed Al Ghassani, Director General of Tourism Promotion at the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, emphasized that the ministry places great importance on participating in international tourism exhibitions as a vital platform to strengthen Oman's presence on the global stage. In a statement to the Oman News Agency, he explained that the ITB Berlin, one of the world's largest travel and tourism exhibitions, will be the next stop for the ministry following its notable success at the International Tourism Exhibition in Madrid. He noted that participating in these exhibitions presents a significant opportunity to introduce the latest developments in Oman's tourism sector and open channels of communication with major global tourism companies and institutions to explore avenues for cooperation. He added that these participations help attract more tourists by promoting Oman's diverse tourism attractions and showcasing the offers and programs provided by Omani companies. The ministry aims to build a broader network of relationships with international tourism institutions through these exhibitions, participating in conferences and seminars held on the sidelines of these events to keep up with the latest trends in the global tourism sector. Such participations provide a promotional and economic platform for Omani companies, especially small and medium enterprises (SMEs), allowing them to showcase their services and products within Oman's pavilion at these events, thereby supporting the tourism sector in general. The Director General of Tourism Promotion explained that the ministry will announce new promotional programs during these exhibitions, in collaboration with strategic partners, to enhance Oman's marketing efforts and attract more investments in the sector. Oman will participate in 15 international tourism exhibitions in 2025, including major tourism exhibitions in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Among the key exhibitions are FITUR in Spain, ITB in Germany, MITT in Russia, ATM in the United Arab Emirates, ITB Asia in Singapore, and WTM in the United Kingdom. Additionally, Oman will participate in specialized global exhibitions such as IMEX in Germany, focusing on incentive travel and conferences, and Sea Trade in the United States, specializing in marine tourism. Alongside participating in these exhibitions, the ministry will organize a series of mobile promotional workshops in targeted markets in the GCC countries, East Asia, and European countries. These workshops aim to strengthen relationships with local and international partners in the tourism sector, explore cooperation opportunities, and sign strategic partnerships. The workshops will feature visual presentations about Oman's diverse tourism attractions and meetings between Omani tourism institutions and major tourism companies in these markets to enhance collaboration and explore contracting opportunities with specialized tourism companies. These participations and promotional activities align with the ministry's strategy to achieve the goals of Oman Vision 2040, which focuses on diversifying the national economy and enhancing the tourism sector as a key economic pillar, thereby strengthening Oman's position on the global tourism map.
