Larne boss Nathan Rooney quietly confident of Euro progression despite scoreless draw with Auda
Larne boss Nathan Rooney remains quietly confident his side can progress in the UEFA Conference League despite being shut out by FK Auda at the Ballymena Showgrounds. Both sides wasted chances to take a slender lead to Riga for the rematch on Wednesday. Rohan Ferguson and Roberts Ozols made crucial saves in an entertaining contest despite the lack of finishing prowess in the scoreless stalemate. "I saw a few levels to our game," said Rooney, who was making his managerial bow for Larne in Europe. "We had five or six chances where we could have done better. The boys did well but we didn't play with huge belief we could turn them over. "Physically we were excellent, they are a bit sharper in terms of games played but I didn't think that was evident tonight. I just think with more belief we can perform better next week. "If we were starting off at the same level it might have been a different story. You can see they have kept their squad together for a long period. "That is ingrained in them. There wasn't many clear-cut chances, Rohan pulled off a great save and there were too many set plays in the game. "We gave up too many fouls which allowed them to slow the game. "I'm happy with the outcome but we must go one step further." The first qualifying round tie remains on a knife edge but Larne know this side, who conquered Cliftonville last year, are beatable. "We will look at the game back and I want to be consistent with this team, not changing too much," said Rooney. "I felt we were solid and have a lot of good attacking players.

We couldn't bring you a goal but, just like Cliftonville and Linfield, next week's second leg for Larne is finely in the balance. Goodnight and we will see you next week for all of those second legs! Update: Date: 21:52 BST Title: FULL-TIME Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda That's all she wrote at Ballymena Showgrounds and next week's second leg will be a straight shootout. Larne pushed for a goal to take with them but it wouldn't come but Nathan Rooney will be confident that his side can go to Latvia and get a result. That game is a 17:00 BST kick off on Wednesday 16th July. Update: Date: 21:49 BST Title: Post Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Larne defend a corner well and Kader Kone fouls Aaron Donnelly, releasing the pressure valve. Update: Date: 21:47 BST Title: INJURY TIME Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Three added minutes for somebody to break the deadlock ahead of next week's second leg. Update: Date: 21:47 BST Title: Post Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Jeers as Kemehlo Nguena tries to curl one into the top corner but leans back and sends it well over. Meanwhile, Benji Magee goes on a dancing run but his final finish is lacking and is an easy stop. Update: Date: 21:43 BST Title: SUBSTITUTIONS Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Alterations for both sides as Tiarnan O'Connor replaces Conor McKendry while Oskars Rubenis is on for Enzo Monteiro. Four minutes plus stoppage time left on Warden Street! Update: Date: 21:40 BST Title: YELLOW CARD Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Paulo Godinho is the latest in the book as he scythes down Conor McKendry with Larne on the break. Free kick Larne midway inside the Auda half... Update: Date: 21:38 BST Title: GREAT SAVE! Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Oh that's a massive save from Rohan Ferguson! Out of nowhere, the two Auda subs combine as Abdoul Traore lays it off for Kader Kone who shimmies past Ryan Nolan. His low effort takes a deflection but the Scottish stopper gets down low to his right to tip it around the post! Update: Date: 21:36 BST Title: Post Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Just over ten minutes remain here at the Showgrounds and Larne will be desperate to get a goal to take to Latvia next week. They have looked the more likely to get one but will it come? Update: Date: 21:30 BST Title: Post Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda That man Godinho gives it away again, this time to Conor McKendry who runs straight at the heart of the Latvians' defence. However, his low effort is easily stopped. Update: Date: 21:26 BST Title: SUBSTITUTIONS Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Nathan Rooney is rolling the dice as he introduces two strikers with just over 20 left. On come Benji Magee and Matty Lusty in place of Paul O'Neill and Mark Randall. Both have had excellent games and leave to a rapturous round of applause. I think the home crowd also appreciate the attacking intent from their boss. Update: Date: 21:22 BST Title: GREAT SAVE! Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Wonderful build-up from Larne sees Mark Randall float a delicious delivery that Paul O'Neill heads goal-bound. However, Roberts Ozols makes a diving save to turn it around the post. From that corner, a nice training ground routine affords Jordan McEneff space in the box but his effort is deflected away by Ivan Erquiaga. That corner comes to nothing as Conor McKendry blazes over but that was a great spell for the hosts as we hit 65 minutes. Update: Date: 21:19 BST Title: YELLOW CARD Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Half-time replacement Kader Kone is booked by Heini Ziskason Vidoy for taking a dive in the box. The home crowd let him know what they think of him, as does Ryan Nolan who was the player closest to the Ivorian forward when he hit the deck. Update: Date: 21:16 BST Title: Post Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Larne have been putting Brazilian centre half Paulo Godinho under pressure and he hasn't always looked comfortable. Dan Bent chases him down and forces him to run the ball out of play but nothing comes of it. Update: Date: 21:12 BST Title: Post Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Larne win their first corner and, as they so often do, they come along like buses. However, neither come to anything as Ryan Nolan clatters Tin Hrvoj at the second one. Update: Date: 21:08 BST Title: Post Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda First chance of the second half goes the way of the men in green and black. Deniss Melniks wins a header at a corner but it sails harmlessly wide. Update: Date: 21:02 BST Title: KICK-OFF Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Back underway in Ballymena as Auda make their second change. Kader Kone replaces Stevenson Jeudi. Update: Date: 20:47 BST Title: HALF-TIME Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Goalless at the break but Nathan Rooney will certainly be the happier of the two managers. If this was a boxing match, Larne would be ahead on points. Update: Date: 20:45 BST Title: INJURY TIME Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda We are into two additional minutes here at the end of the first half. Update: Date: 20:43 BST Title: Post Content: Larne 0-0 FK Auda Conor McKendry comes striding on to a Paul O'Neill cutback with purpose but fluffs his lines and his effort dribbles harmlessly through to Roberts Ozols.
