FOX 35 Weather Impact Day: Live coverage and timeline
The Brief Expect widespread storms Sunday afternoon due to an upper-level disturbance and sea breeze collision, bringing heavy rain, gusty winds, and possible minor flooding. Storms will peak between 3-9 PM before moving offshore, with a low but nonzero tornado threat. ORLANDO, Fla. - Sunday has been declared a FOX 35 Weather Impact Day. The FOX 35 Storm Team has provided a breakdown as to what to expect and when to expect it. What to expect Downpours and embedded storms are ongoing across our NW neighborhoods across Marion County up into our FOX 51 communities late this AM. As the atmosphere continues to destabilize, an upper-level disturbance, along with a sea breeze collision will add lift to the atmosphere. This will make for more widespread storms to ignite into the afternoon. What to expect Storms will likely ignite with the help of the sea breeze closer to the coast between 1-2 PM and then through the afternoon, the storms will increase in coverage. Between 3-5 PM or so is when we'll likely see some of these storms getting into the metro. From there on out, through around 8-9 PM is when we'll have the bulk of the rain on top of us. Showers and storms look to then exit offshore of the East Coast through 9-10 PM. What to expect The primary concern will be the rain with amounts likely around 1-3" in the hardest hit communities. Because of the motion of the storms, not all of us will see that much rain. Because of all of the moisture in the air, torrential rain is likely. With that, ponding on the roads and even some minor flooding of low lying areas is possible. Especially with how dry things are, the rain will likely runoff to start. Aside from that, if we can get a couple of strong storms to develop, gusty wind and some smaller hail is possible too. The tornado threat is really low but not zero. When the sea breezes collide, and you have a strong storm, that can aid in getting a storm to rotate. It's something we'll be watching closely. ORLANDO, Fla. - A weather system that brought devastating tornadoes and severe thunderstorms to parts of the central and southern United States is expected to reach Florida on Sunday, which is why it is a FOX 35 Storm Alert Day. Severe thunderstorms and tornadoes have already begun to impact parts of North Florida, near the Florida-Georgia State line. Here in Central Florida, Sunday will begin as a hot, humid and mostly-sunny day, before the main storm system arrives in the afternoon and evening hours. Here's what to know about the latest weather alerts, storm forecast, timeline and main weather threats. Timeline 8 a.m. - At least 20 counties in Florida – including Alachua, Dixie, Flagler and Marion continues in north-central Florida – are under a tornado watch until at least 3 p.m. 12:11 p.m. - A severe thunderstorm warning was issued for parts of Alachua and Gilchrist counties through 12:30 p.m., but the warning was canceled soon after. The warning stated that the storm is moving to the northeast at 40 mph and is producing 60 mph wind gusts and penny-sized hail. Heavy rain and lightning is associated with the storm, and it has the potential of producing a tornado. What's the difference? A tornado WATCH means there is the potential for a tornado to form. A tornado WARNING means there is a radar-indicated or tornado spotter-confirmed tornado on the ground. When a tornado warning is issued, get inside immediately and find the most-interior room in your house, such as a closet, bathroom or room. You want to get away from windows, doors and outside walls. What we know It will be hot, humid and sunny in Central Florida to start the day before storms and potential severe weather arrive on Sunday afternoon and evening. Highs will reach the upper 80s and low 90s. The unstable air, as well as the dynamics in the atmosphere, will make for a severe weather threat this afternoon into the evening. The main weather threats are strong thunderstorms, lightning, heavy rain, wind gusts between 45 and 55 mph, and hail up to 1" in diameter. There is also the potential for one or two tornadoes, according to forecasters. The storm system is expected to reach the Orlando metro by late afternoon and evening. Timeline: Ocala/Gainesville/The Villages: 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Orlando/Sanford/Daytona Beach: 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. Titusville/Cocoa Beach/St. Cloud: 7 p.m. - 11 p.m. The severe weather threat should end by midnight, as the storms make their way out of Central Florida. What's next Monday will be beautiful and much cooler compared to our Sunday. Highs fall back into the lower to middle 70s, and it'll feel a lot comfier thanks to the lower humidity. By the afternoon, we'll see plenty of sunshine as high pressure takes over. This high pressure center continues to build as we approach midweek, making for abundant sunshine and warming temps.
