Tropical Storm Alvin is unraveling quickly as it churns large swells towards portions of western mainland Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula, bringing an increased risk of life-threatening rip currents. The FOX Forecast Center said land impacts are expected to be minimal as it treks over much cooler water and encounters hostile winds aloft. Alvin's winds peaked at 60 mph Friday morning after forming in the Eastern Pacific south of Mexico the day prior, after becoming the first named storm of the 2025 hurricane season. Maximum sustained winds have since decreased to near 50 mph. A Georgia community is reeling after a tornado touched down in Henry County on Thursday. The twister tore through several homes and left an 18-year-old critically injured at a hospital, according to county police. The twister touched down just before 4 p.m. local time outside the city of Locust Grove, about 40 miles southeast of Atlanta. A blistering heat wave is driving temperatures into the triple digits this week across a vast region of the western U.S., serving as a stark reminder that meteorological summer is just days away. Nearly 20 million residents are under heat alerts stretching from the Desert Southwest to the Pacific Northwest. The hottest locations are expected to see temperatures between 105 and 110 degrees. A 20-foot shark sighting in a New England pond sent ripples of panic and excitement across the popular summer tourist destination on Memorial Day. Many initially believed a massive great white shark had ventured into the calm waters of the Great Salt Pond on Block Island, Rhode Island. However, marine experts have since identified the behemoth as a much less menacing, albeit still enormous, basking shark weighing thousands of pounds. Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather: Tropical Depression 1-E expected to become Alvin off Mexico's coast

Welcome to the Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather. It's Thursday, May 29, 2025. Start your day with everything you need to know about today's weather. You can also get a quick briefing of national, regional and local weather whenever you like with the FOX Weather Update podcast. The first tropical depression of the season, which formed in the Eastern Pacific, is expected to strengthen into Tropical Storm Alvin on Thursday during what could be a complex year for forecasters around the basin. Tropical Depression One-E is expected to remain far enough offshore that impacts along Mexico's coast will be limited to heightened swells and increased rip currents along beaches. Powerful thunderstorms swept across a large swath of Texas on Wednesday, producing damaging winds, hail and flash flooding that triggered water rescues and left thousands without power. The Austin Fire Department reported responding to around a dozen water rescues, with most incidents involving people stranded in vehicles or trapped in areas where floodwaters rose rapidly. Earlier Wednesday, fire officials in San Antonio responded to at least eight water rescue calls as flash flooding swamped the morning commute. An early-season stretch of heat is forecast to evolve Friday, peaking over the weekend across portions of the West. The FOX Forecast Center said Extreme Heat Warnings and Heat Advisories have already been issued for parts of California, Nevada and Arizona, where temperatures will likely soar into the triple-digits. This includes more than 14 million Americans through Saturday. If Redding, California, hits above 105 degrees on Friday, it will be the earliest the city has reached that temperature in 17 years (since May 17, 2008, when it hit 106 degrees). This would also be Redding's first 100-degree day of 2025. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has signed several bills into law aimed at cracking down on animal cruelty, including one inspired by a dog left abandoned during Hurricane Milton in 2024. The measures, named "Trooper's Law" and "Dexter's Law," were signed during a ceremony on Wednesday at a dog rescue facility in South Florida. Trooper's Law makes it a third-degree felony to restrain and abandon a dog outside during a natural disaster or the preparedness stage of an emergency. Talk about a wedding with a twist. These two New Mexico newlyweds kicked off their married life in an unforgettable way. For Daynnely and William Carrillo, their picture-perfect wedding day in Portales was punctuated by an extraordinary backdrop: a massive, developing tornado. As severe weather warnings began to ripple through Roosevelt County on Sunday, wedding photographer Chesnea Clemmons found herself in a unique position. "No clue this was even on the radar until my phone went off telling me there was a tornado in the area," she told FOX Weather. Here are a few more stories you might find interesting. Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather: Eastern Pacific braces for tropical depression or Tropical Storm Alvin

Welcome to the Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather. It's Wednesday, May 28, 2025. Start your day with everything you need to know about today's weather. You can also get a quick briefing of national, regional and local weather whenever you like with the FOX Weather Update podcast. The National Hurricane Center (NHC) said that a tropical depression or Tropical Storm Alvin is expected to form on Wednesday as Invest 90-E continues to churn off Mexico's coast. The NHC designated the area of low pressure as Invest 90-E on Monday. An invest is a term used to indicate an area under increased scrutiny by forecasters for the potential of tropical development. Strong to severe storms drenched the South on Tuesday. Most of the activity was centered over Alabama and Georgia, where a squall line developed and even produced a tornado outside the Atlanta metro just after 6:30 p.m. local time. Altamaha EMC, a power company that services southeastern Georgia, reported that at least 12 power poles were taken down Tuesday evening in Toombs County, around the same time that local emergency managers reported straight-line wind damage. A stormy pattern will persist across the South through this week, with daily chances for severe thunderstorms. While the overall threat is lower on Wednesday and Thursday, the continued potential for daily heavy rainfall will increase the risk of flash flooding. By Friday, storms will target the Carolinas and the East Coast as we finally see an end to the stormy pattern heading into the weekend, the FOX Forecast Center said. Extreme winds lofted dirt and dust across southeastern Australia this week, covering homes and highways in a red haze and prompting air quality alerts near Sydney. Video from rural Victoria shows the dust smothering the town of Mildura. Another scene from the town of Orroroo shows "dirt and dust everywhere" in South Australia, according to video from the Council of Orroroo Carrieton. "Can't see a thing," a woman says in the video as whipping winds can be heard. Here are a few more stories you might find interesting. Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather: First tropical storm of 2025 expected while South blasted by hail, wind

Welcome to the Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather. It's Tuesday, May 27, 2025. Start your day with everything you need to know about today's weather. You can also get a quick briefing of national, regional and local weather whenever you like with the FOX Weather Update podcast. A tropical depression is expected to form off the coast of Mexico this week and would be named Alvin if it strengthens into a tropical storm, the first of the season in either the Eastern Pacific or Atlantic basins. The National Hurricane Center designated the area as Invest 90-E on Monday. An invest is a term used to indicate an area under increased scrutiny by forecasters for the potential of tropical development. Rounds of severe weather barreled across communities from the Plains to the Southeast on Monday, slowing travel back home after the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend. The powerful storms in Texas reportedly produced baseball-sized hail in some areas while hurricane-force wind gusts snapped trees like twigs, damaged property and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of utility customers. Strong to severe thunderstorms are likely on Tuesday from parts of the southern Plains through the Southeast. If enough heating occurs during the day, a few stronger storms could form, especially where the atmosphere becomes most unstable. In these areas, isolated hail and strong wind gusts will be possible. Hail larger than 2 inches in diameter is most likely across Central and West Texas. Hawaii's Kilauea volcano roared to life once again on Sunday and sent lava shooting about 1,000 feet into the air in a spectacular display that was captured on video. The Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) said the 23rd eruptive episode began around 4:15 p.m. local time when sustained lava fountains began erupting from the north vent and continued to become more intense. Weekend Weather Update from FOX Weather: Severe weather threat increases as millions celebrate Memorial Day

Welcome to the Daily Weather Update from FOX Weather. It's Sunday, May 25, 2025. Start your week with all the top weather news for the week ahead. You can also get a quick briefing of national, regional and local weather whenever you like with the FOX Weather Update podcast. Outdoor plans from the Plains to the Southeast and mid-Atlantic could be in jeopardy through the rest of Memorial Day weekend as a slow-moving storm system threatens millions with rounds of torrential rain and severe weather. Sunday's threat comes after parts of the same regions were slammed with severe thunderstorms and flooding on Saturday, with damage to buildings reported in Oklahoma, water rescues in Missouri, and storms tearing across communities in Florida. NOAA's Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has placed more than 5.6 million people in two parts of the U.s. in a Level 3 out of 5 risk on its 5-point severe thunderstorm risk scale. The first area of concern is located over the southern Plains while the second area of concern is located over portions of the Mississippi Valley. Development chances remain high for an area of low pressure that could form off the southern coast of Mexico, a little over a week after the official start of the Eastern Pacific hurricane season. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), the area of low pressure will likely form in the coming days, several hundred miles off the southern coast of Mexico. The NHC said conditions appear favorable for the system's development, and a tropical depression could form early this week. If the system continues to develop and forms into a tropical storm or hurricane, it will receive the name Alvin. For the fourth consecutive year, the Atlantic basin is set to enter hurricane season without a single named tropical system forming prior to the official start date of June 1. Forecasters last tracked a named storm in the basin before the annual start date in 2021, when a system developed in late May. Since then, all named first formations have occurred in June, aligning more closely with the climatological average. A drone video recorded in Ozark, Missouri, shows flooding after torrential rain and thunderstorms pummeled the region on Saturday. Flash flooding also led to multiple highway closures and water rescues in Springfield. Millions of people in the Plains and South faced the threat of severe weather on Saturday, and damage and power outages were reported in parts of Oklahoma.
