Phillies Almost Lost Jhoan Duran and Iconic 'El Incomprendido' Entrance to Another Team

This would have been devastating for Philadelphia Phillies fans. The team nearly didn't have Jhoan Duran and his electric 'El Incomprendido' entrance at Citizens Bank Park for the ninth inning. FanSided's MLB reporter Robert Murray revealed on the 'Fair Territory' podcast that Duran was nearly traded to the Seattle Mariners last week before the deadline. 'They almost got Jhoan Duran,' said Murray. 'There was at one point that morning that he was traded that I thought he was going to be in Seattle.' Phillies fans would've been heartbroken if they hadn't landed Duran. The former Minnesota Twins closer has been absolutely dynamic in his first two appearances, bringing sellout crowds to their feet when he enters as the lights go out, the gongs hit and Farruko's 'El Incomprendido' blares throughout the stadium while videoboards fill with tarantulas walking through flames. Duran has already thrown the fastest pitch in ballpark history — a 103.3 mph fastball against the Detroit Tigers last Friday. In that same game, his 102.5 mph heater to Tigers' Riley Greene was the fastest game-ending strikeout by a Phillies pitcher since pitch tracking started in 2008, per Sarah Langs. Phillies fans are so eager to see Duran enter the ninth that they actually booed when Max Lazar came into Tuesday night's game against the Los Angeles Angels with Philadelphia up 5-0. Duran had been warming before Brandon Marsh's two-run home run made it a non-save situation. Lazar would go on to toss a scoreless ninth. Duran will wear a Phillies uniform at least through 2027. Philadelphia parted with pitcher Mick Abel and catching prospect Eduardo Tait — two top 100 prospects by MLB Pipeline — to complete the deal. Red Sox' Shocking Offer Revealed For Twins' Joe Ryan At Trade Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. After a disappointing -- to say the least -- trade deadline day, the Boston Red Sox and chief baseball officer Craig Breslow took a beating from fans and the media. One top MLB insider, Ken Rosenthal, on his Fair Territory podcast, slammed Boston's efforts as an "epic fail." The Red Sox sought on Thursday to acquire the Minnesota Twins' 29-year-old righty ace Joe Ryan, but ultimately Breslow's attempt fell flat. Rosenthal then piled on, deriding the Red Sox executive's efforts to deal for Ryan as "feeble." MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JUNE 22: Joe Ryan #41 of the Minnesota Twins celebrates recording a complete game shutout against the Boston Red Sox after the game at Target Field on June 22, 2023 in Minneapolis,... MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA - JUNE 22: Joe Ryan #41 of the Minnesota Twins celebrates recording a complete game shutout against the Boston Red Sox after the game at Target Field on June 22, 2023 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Twins defeated the Red Sox 6-0. MoreBut were they? Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reported that the Red Sox were not willing to offer "an enticing enough package of their top-tier prospects" to Minnesota. A new report by a longtime Red Sox insider, Rob Bradford of Boston radio station WEEI and his own Baseball Isn't Boring podcast, would appear to directly contradict the previous reporting. "There was also the rare willingness to include anybody and everybody from the Sox's minor league system in the deals," Bradford wrote, in a Saturday report for "Payton Tolle. Jhostynxon Garcia. Franklin Arias. Two of the three, in different combinations, were offered up together as part of packages that also included members of the Sox's Top 10 prospect list." Who are Tolle, Garcia, and Arias? Only the top three prospects in the Red Sox system — a system that Bleacher Report ranked seventh in the big leagues prior to the trade deadline (though it dropped to No. 10 after Thursday). More MLB: Red Sox Whiff on Trade For 36-Year-Old Righty Who Was Drafted 3 Times In addition to ranking Arias first, Garcia second and Tolle third in the Boston farm system, MLB Pipeline also ranks all three in the top 100 prospects league-wide. Arias, a 19-year-old shortstop signed in 2023 out of Venezuela, is the No. 33 prospect in baseball, according to the Pipeline. Garcia, who comes with the amusing nickname "The Password" in honor of his confusingly spelled given name, ranks No. 88. A power-hitting outfielder with 13 home runs and a .928 OPS in 205 at-bats for Triple-A Worcester, Garcia was a 2019 signing, also out of Venezuela. Tolle just cracked the MLB Pipeline top 100 on July 19, at No. 100. But in two weeks, the 22-year-old left-handed power pitcher has moved up to No. 92. Drafted in the second round, 50th overall, in 2024, the imposing Tolle who stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 250 pounds, has already struck out 31 in 23 innings after his promotion to the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs. The former two-way player at Wichita State, who focused solely on pitching after a transfer to Texas Christian, dominated the High-A ranks to start the season, fanning 79 in just 44 2/3 innings for the Greenville Drive. "In order to add impact players, particularly impact starting pitching, we had to take the position that we'd be willing to talk about anybody in our system, and we were," Breslow said Saturday, as quoted by Conor Roche of Breslow said that he would "strongly disagree" with Rosenthal's description of his efforts to get Ryan as "feeble," and if Bradford's report that he was willing to part with two of the Red Sox' best prospects — as well as others from the organization's top 10 — is accurate, it is understandable why he would feel that way. 'Epic Fail': Top MLB Insider Rips Red Sox For 'Feeble' Deadline Attempts

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The Boston Red Sox positioned themselves like a team that was going to buy at the MLB trade deadline to reinforce a stated preseason goal to win 90 to 95 games and contend in the American League East. Instead, they traded for Dustin May and Steven Matz. Forget all of the rumors, whispers and speculation. When the chips were down, and the trade deadline came and went, Boston found itself in a familiar position: on the outside looking in, as teams around them all improved. FT. (Photo by Billie Weiss/Boston) More Chief baseball officer Craig Breslow insisted he and his staff did all it could to get uncomfortable and make a deal using its heralded farm system. Breslow also said he wasn't willing to part with anything from his major league roster. Regardless, the Red Sox aren't much better than they were the day before the deadline, and The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal absolutely took them to task for that. Rosenthal, who also does sideline work for FOX Sports, shredded Breslow and the Sox on his "Fair Territory" podcast. "Epic fail. Comes off as an epic fail last year with Craig Breslow, and this was an epic fail, as well," Rosenthal said on the show. Rosenthal pointed to Boston's supposed pursuit of Minnesota Twins ace Joe Ryan as a major miss. Despite some reports (and misguided social media activity), Rosenthal doesn't believe the Red Sox ever came close to prying Ryan out of the Twin Cities, despite Minnesota's impromptu fire sale. "My understanding is any talks with the Twins were feeble at best," Rosenthal added. "They didn't come at them hard. The Red Sox were one of many teams that use modeling and try to figure out what the best values are on and its' all about efficiency and getting the best deal and this and that and the other thing. But at some point, you've gotta fire." Rosenthal also chided the Red Sox for failing to upgrade at first base. He was the one who reported Boston was in on Eugenio Suarez -- with the idea to play him at first base -- before Arizona traded the slugger to Seattle. Put a different way: another missed opportunity. Rosenthal believes the Red Sox better be careful. The spin out of Jersey Street almost certainly will revolve around not wanting to sacrifice too much of the big league core for next season and beyond. That's risky business, though, for a team that is competing for a playoff spot now. "This is a team that is on the rise," Rosenthal said on the podcast. "They might say 'We're going to be better next year, our young guys will be that much better.' Yeah, but that's what the Orioles were saying a year go. There's no guarantee in this sport or any other." The Orioles, of course, entered August nine games under .500 and were sellers at the deadline. MLB Insider Reports Rangers Will Be Active At MLB Trade Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Texas Rangers have stormed back into the playoff race after a tough start to the season that looked to be lost, and are now entering trade season with a chance to make a push. One MLB insider believes Texas will get bold before Thursday's MLB trade deadline. "They're going to be looking for a right-handed hitter, and perhaps more importantly, high-leverage relievers," Ken Rosenthal said on "Fair Territory". ARLINGTON, TX - JULY 26: Marcus Semien #2 of the Texas Rangers celebrates with teammates following the team's tenth inning win against the Atlanta Braves at Globe Life Field on July 26, 2025 in Arlington,... ARLINGTON, TX - JULY 26: Marcus Semien #2 of the Texas Rangers celebrates with teammates following the team's tenth inning win against the Atlanta Braves at Globe Life Field on July 26, 2025 in Arlington, Texas. More Photo byThe Rangers enter Tuesday a half-game back of the Boston Red Sox for the final wild-card spot in the American League and just 4 games back of the Houston Astros for the AL West. While the Astros have 18 players on the injured list, the Rangers are getting ready to make a run at the division title. Rosenthal notes that the Rangers are going to be in the market for high-leverage relievers. While the Rangers have the third-best bullpen ERA this season, they have blown the fifth-most saves as a group. Just about every contender is in the market for bullpen help, but there are some quality options on the market this year. The Rangers should be calling the St. Louis Cardinals about Ryan Helsley and the Minnesota Twins about Jhoan Duran as the deadline inches closer to give them the arm that they need to secure games and reach the postseason. Rosenthal also mentions that they should be in the market for a right-handed bat, and while the market is thin on power hitting, the Rangers could find a serviceable bat to add to their lineup for the final stretch. The Rangers should be handling the needs of their bullpen before making any changes to their offense.
