Fast times a big feature as Fairly Giddy makes early pace tell in Stake decider at Enniscorthy greyhound stadium

The highlight on Thursday night was the final of the annual April Stake, worth €4,000 to the winner. Local owner Margaret Stafford saw her Fairly Giddy flash from traps as she has been doing all stake. And she saved her fastest split for the right night as she led the field a merry dance down the back, opening up a good four-length advantage. Trap four runner Tip Top Bundee was chasing her hard to close down the gap as they turned for the judge, with trap six runner Pandereto and trap one runner Bust The Tins also putting in strong finishing efforts up the rail. In a driving finish that saw the four runners flash across the line together, it was a very close call but Giddy had made her early pace tell and held on for a short-head win from Tip Top, with Panderto half a length away in third in a time of 29.14. Fairly Giddy was completing her hat-trick of wins in the stake and was a very deserving victor. The Monday night card saw the start of the Wexford Greyhound Owners and Breeders Unraced Stake, with some very fast times recorded. That started in the very first heat as trap six runner Untold Sterling, the red-hot favourite, was impressive. He was led down towards the third bend by trap four runner Four Over before flashing past to race clear to a seven lengths win in a very fast 28.58. Heat two saw clever tracking at the first bend by trap two runner Bounceback Luna who checked back to the rail to avoid trouble and run second into the back behind the runaway leader, trap three runner Mutts Maximus who had a big lead. Gradually Luna closed the gap and was within striking distance off the last bend and, sure enough, she came storming through to score by one and a half lengths from the latter in a time of 29.03. Heat three saw the third odds-on favourite in a row win, but it was not without some anxious moments as Badminton Chopin stumbled out of his trap one draw and had plenty to do going into the opening bends. Like the previous winner, he tracked cleverly on the rail and gained several places to move into second spot behind the leader, trap six runner Roberstown Cruz. Robertstown ran wide off the third bend and Badminton came up on the rail to lead into the straight and went on to beat that rival by three-quarters of a length in a time of 29.27. Indeed, all five heats run were won by odds-on faourites, and in heat five this favourite was made to work hard for the victory. Trap four runner Borderan Ace showed the better turn of pace off the second bend to lead from trap one runner and favourite, Sallagh Curly. However, Sallagh came back to join the leader into the third bend but then ran wide approaching the last corner, allowing Borderan to come back on the inside. The favourite was all out to hold the renewed run of Boderan by a length in a time of 29.19. Heat six was a very messy race but in the end the favourite came through to score a two and a half lengths win and complete a Sallagh double, as this time it was Larry for the victory in a time of 29.47. Race seven was the final of the Timeclub @ Enniscorthy Greyhound Stadium Stake and again the theme of the night continued. The red-hot favourite, trap four runner Dashing Tom, proved too strong for his rivals when getting around the opening bends in front. And while trap three runner White Gem tried hard to stay in touch, Tom was dashing hard for the winning line and raced to a clearcut three and a half length win in a fast 28.87 to take the €1,250 cheque for owner Thomas Power and trainer Myles Roban from Enniscorthy. Favourites eliminated as Stakes finalists emerge at Enniscorthy greyhound stadium

Early pace won the day in the first semi as trap four runner Fairly Giddy made the bend in front as the pacers set the tone down the back. Trap three runner Misterin Sam was hot on the leader's heels with trap six runner Ballybreen Luna in contention on the outside. However, things began to change at the third bend as Fairly Giddy was heading for the judge. Trap one runner Ashwood News was making his move but was forced to check at this point and had to go wide to make his challenge. And this moment may have cost him the win as he stormed home off the final bend to close down the leader to one and a half lengths at the line. Trap five runner Tipo Top Bundee, who turned into the straight last, also came home well to get that all-important final spot next week. The winning time was a good 29.09. The second semi was an incident-packed affair with all kinds of pushing and barging at the third bend, and the one to benefit was trap two runner Pandereto, the 10/1 complete outsider of the field. Trap three runner Bust The Tins also took advantage as both runners were behind at this stage. Pandereto came on to score from the latter by two lengths in a time of 29.17, with trap five's Karlow Blaze getting the last qualifying spot for this week's intriguing final. The final of the A1/2 Dual Distance Stake took place in race seven over the longer trip of 600 yards. The 2/1 joint favourite, Bog Crush Cat, got out fast to lead and he was never going to lose as he galloped on strongly all the way to hold off the other joint favourite, trap two runner Swift Ambitious, by a snug two and a half lengths in a time of 33.13 (600 yards). Cat was following up his fine ten-length semi-final win last week for owner Tony Power and trainer Joe Anglim. Enniscorthy owner/trainer Dermot Flynn had a good week, recording a winner on both nights as his well-known Tagalong prefix came good. In race three on the Monday night, his Tagalong Dee won at nice odds of 4/1 in a time of 29.69. And on Thursday night his Tagalong Bailout had to battle all the way to the line after trap five runner Ayyhdas Prince led. Tagalong was chasing but had a good four lengths to make up down the back, but he gradually closed in on the leader. Approaching the final bend he made his challenge, but trap one runner Tomorrow's Daisy was also making good progress, staying on strongly on the inside. And as the three flashed across the line it was all short heads, with Tagalong getting the verdict from Tomorrow's with long-time leader Aaydhas in a time of 29.89. The only sub 29-second run of the night came in race four. Trap four runner Cushie Rustic got out well to clear away to the opening bends and was always in control of this contest after that, running out a snug two-length winner from trap two runner Toker Pablo who made up a lot of ground to close Cushie down all the way to the line in a fast time of 28.89. Close finishes abound in very competitive stake at Enniscorthy greyhound stadium

Right from the off, in heat one of the second round, we saw a good front-running performance from trap three runner Fairly Giddy who broke smartly to lead while chased by trap one runner Bust The Tins down the back. And while Giddy had a nice enough lead, gradually the chasing Bust The Tins closed the gap and took the rail off the final bend to deliver one last effort to catch the leader. Fairly Giddy stayed strong though to hold on by half a length and score in a good 29.03. Heat two saw another runner get out quickly to lead as Cushie Mystery, the 6/4 favourite, was chased by trap one runner Tip Top Roxy into the back. Tip Top moved to challenge Cushie at the third bend and these two fought out a good battle all the way to the line, but Cushie with the inside line dug deep to score by half a length in a fast 28.90. Heat three went to another pace-setter as trap one runner Misterin Sam went around the opening bends in front and the 6/1 shot was not for passing, fending off the challengers. In the end Sam was a snug enough three-quarters of a length winner from the running-on trap three's Ashwood News who could not go with the early pace but finished strongly. Heat four went to the even-money favourite as trap three runner Anthony's Way got away well to lead from trap six runner Ballybreen Luna who made a really good race of it to the final bends. It was at that point that Anthony's powered away to put four lengths between them at the line in a time of 29.03. This week's semi-finals promise some tight racing and it would be a brave person who could call the six finalists. Enniscorthy trainer Davy Morris continues to reel off the winners, recording another nice double. In race seven his trap five runner, Killoughrim Jet, was sent off the 6/4 favourite and punters were counting their money as he showed fine early pace to open up a nice lead down the back. However, turning for the judge his stride began to shorten and some backers were getting nervous as Killoughrim needed the line and was all out to hold the finishing run of trap six's Stripe Buddy by a neck in a time of 29.46. His second winner came in race eight, the first semi-final of the A1/2 Dual Distance Stake over the 550 yards trip. His trap six charge Bono Champ went up in front from the favourite, trap five runner Swift Ambitious, with the third-placed runner, trap one's Vinegarhill Rhys, always in that spot as they ran down the back in Indian file. Bono kept up the gallop and did enough to hold Swift by half a length in a time of 30.39. The second semi saw a much more convincing winner as trap six runner Bog Cush Cat led and missed the trouble at the opening bends to come right away to score by ten lengths in a time of 30.26. On the Monday night there was a re-run of the Timeclub@Enniscorthy Greyhound Stadium round one heat four (grade A5), and there was a convincing winner in the end. The favourite, trap three runner Dashing Tom, did well to free himself of possible trouble into the opening bends as trap four runner Ned On Fire set the pace. Dashing did just that to go second and challenged the leader strongly into the lower bends. However, Ned battled on well to make a race of it but nearing the final bend Dashing took control and came right away from the latter to score by five lengths in a time of 29.06.
