Amanah to review call for PH to contest Melaka polls solo

The Hang Tuah Jaya Amanah division yesterday agreed that PH should be prepared to face three-cornered contests if necessary at the next Melaka state election. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Amanah will review a resolution from one of its divisions urging Pakatan Harapan (PH) to contest the upcoming Melaka state election on its own. The Hang Tuah Jaya Amanah division passed the resolution yesterday, with members unanimously agreeing that PH should be prepared to face three-cornered contests if necessary. Amanah secretary-general Faiz Fadzil said the push to go solo may have been driven by overlapping seat claims with Umno. 'Amanah must respect the voice of the grassroots as this is a motion passed during the division's annual meeting,' he said. 'I understand the concerns of grassroots members as many of the seats contested by Amanah overlap with Umno's.' Amanah Youth chief Hasbie Muda said a final decision on whether to accept or reject the Hang Tuah Jaya resolution would be made at the party's national convention. 'Every view and motion from the grassroots will be considered and must be respected by the leadership,' he said. The Melaka state assembly has 28 seats: 20 held by Barisan Nasional (BN), five by PH, and three by Perikatan Nasional. Disputes over seat allocations in Melaka also surfaced in May when nine Melaka DAP branches proposed an equal split in seats between PH and BN, with each contesting 14 seats in the next election. BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi later said that such discussions were premature as the Melaka polls are only expected to be held next year. The current state assembly term ends in December 2026.

58 Amanah members sacked for joining polls of other parties

Amanah secretary-general Faiz Fadzil hoped this would serve as a reminder to all Amanah members to comply with party discipline. (Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Amanah has sacked 58 party members this year for taking part in the internal elections of other political parties, says secretary-general Faiz Fadzil. Faiz said these members had registered as members of other political parties, adding that such actions can be punished with the termination of their Amanah membership under the party's constitution. Besides the 58 who were sacked, he said 51 others have been issued show-cause letters on suspicion of being involved in the elections of other parties. 'Their failure to respond to the letter can lead to their sacking. Amanah hopes that these actions will serve as a strict reminder to all Amanah members to comply with party discipline,' he said in a statement. He did not disclose the parties that the now-former Amanah members had defected to. Earlier this month, PKR secretary-general Fuziah Salleh said 28 party members had been expelled after it was confirmed they were members of other parties. This included three recently elected leaders.

PAS has abandoned Fadzil Noor's 'national unity' legacy

Amanah secretary-general Faiz Fadzil has accused PAS of straying from the moderate Islamic principles championed by his late father, former PAS president Fadzil Noor, in favour of divisive racial politics. In a statement, Faiz said Fadzil had mooted the idea of 'national unity' back in 2001 to counter then-premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's push for Malay unity, and it remains to form Amanah's foundation.
