Fire at senior residence in United States kills at least nine people
Authorities in the US state of Massachusetts have said that at least nine people are dead and 30 injured after a fire churned through an assisted living facility. Five firefighters were among those taken to the hospital and later released after responding to the blazes at Gabriel House, home to about 70 residents, on Sunday night in Fall River. 'This is an unfathomable tragedy for the families involved and the Fall River community,' Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon said in a statement on Monday. 'On behalf of the Fall River Fire Department, I want to express our heartfelt condolences to the loved ones who are grieving this morning.' Firefighters met with heavy smoke and flames when they first arrived at the facility before entering to rescue trapped residents, one of whom remains in critical condition. The Massachusetts Department of Fire Services says the cause of the fire is under investigation. About 50 firefighters responded to the incident, 30 of whom were off duty. Chief Bacon said that some people were hanging out of the facility's windows looking to be rescued. Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey offered condolences to the victims in a statement on Monday, and promised 'the full assistance of the state'. 'A full investigation is already under way,' said Healey. 'I know the people of Fall River are strong and resilient, and now is the time for us to all come together to support one another through this terrible tragedy.'

MASSACHUSETTS - Nine people were killed and one person was in critical condition after a large fire broke out at an assisted living facility in Fall River, Massachusetts, on July 13 night, officials said. The Fall River Fire Department responded to reports of a fire at Gabriel House, an assisted living facility, Fall River Fire chief Jeffrey Bacon said at a news conference July 14 morning. Firefighters encountered thick smoke and flames, as well as residents who were screaming for help out of windows, Mr Bacon said. More than 30 residents were taken to the hospital, he added. 'We're at the scene of a pretty unfathomable tragedy tonight,' Bacon said, adding that the situation was 'tricky and chaotic' as firefighters struggled to rescue people and douse the blaze. About 50 firefighters were involved, including every firefighter on duty in the city, he said. 'Everybody was rescuing people,' Mr Bacon said July 14 morning. The fire was extinguished as of early July 14, Sergeant Ross Aubin, a spokesperson for the Fall River Police Department, said. The cause of the fire was under investigation, he added. Officials said the fire was contained to one wing of the building. Officers from the Police Department were the first emergency workers to arrive, Sgt Aubin said. They ran into the building and rescued more than 12 residents who were not able to walk out on their own. The city set up a shelter for displaced residents, officials said. 'One of the issues we're facing this morning is getting people their medicine,' said Mr Paul Coogan, Fall River's mayor, at the July 14 morning news conference. 'This is the kind of thing you don't want in the middle of July,' he said. 'It's Sunday night, and the city explodes around a tragedy like this, it's not good for anybody.' Gabriel House opened in 1999 and has 100 units, according to records from the state of Massachusetts. 'Multiple' people killed in fire at Fall River assisted living center; multiple injured
FALL RIVER — A fire at Gabriel House assisted living center has resulted in 'multiple fatalities and multiple injuries' according to Fall River Fire Chief Jeffrey Bacon. Bacon said Fall River Fire Department crews responded to the fire at about 9:30 p.m. Sunday, July 13. When crews arrived on scene they saw heaving fire and multiple people hanging out of the windows looking to be rescued. He said multiple people were rescued from the apartment and transported to local hospitals for treatment. "Unfortunately at this time we have multiple fatalities and multiple injuries and we are still working to get those numbers to you," Bacon said at a press conference at about 12:45 a.m. Five Fall River firefighters were transported to area hospitals as well with minor injuries. According to an official on scene, there were about 69 residents of the apartment complex at 261 Oliver St. off South Main Street in the city's South End. There were sprinkers in the Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan said the city opened the Timao Center shelter on Bay Street and residents who were evacuated were being sent to the shelter for the evening. The fire department has set up a family reunification center at Saint Anne's Hospital in the chapel. They are asking that anyone who goes there looking for information about a loved one should enter through the Emergency Department of the hospital. Bacon said about 50 firefighters responded to the multiple-alarm fire and mutual aid was called in to cover the station. "The fire attack was very quick, it was just a very smokey fire," said Bacon. "Our heart goes out to all the families and people that were injured here and lost their lives here," said Bacon. Over the next few hours, Bacon said investigators from the FRFD and State Fire Marshal's Office will be on scene investigating the cause of the fire. Coogan praised the coordinated effort of the fire and police departments, emergency medical assistance in responding to the fire.
