Night Always Comes review: Vanessa Kirby gives it her all, but this poverty theme park isn't worth the entrance fee
Night Always Comes Director : Benjamin Caron Cert : None Genre : Drama Starring : Vanessa Kirby, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Zack Gottsagen, Stephen James, Randall Park, Julia Fox, Michael Kelly, Eli Roth Running Time : 1 hr 48 mins Vanessa Kirby , who worked far too hard to save the unnecessarily glum Fantastic Four: First Steps , is yet again overexerting herself in an unworthy vehicle. Adapted from Willy Vlautin's novel , Night Always Comes opens with a lazy lesson in the failings of trickle-down economics delivered as incidental radio broadcasts on homelessness, low wages and grocery bills. Sarah Conradt's screenplay starts strongly with a punchy save-the-farm premise. Lynette (Kirby) is desperate to put down a deposit on the family home she shares with her indolent mother ( Jennifer Jason Leigh ) and older brother, Kenny (Zack Gottsagen). The crumbling house is not much, but ownership will keep social services away from Kenny, who has Down syndrome. Mom, alas, has other ideas. She blows the downpayment on a car, leaving her frantic daughter scrambling to raise $25,000 over one eventful – and seedy – night. At first there are welcome parallels between Benjamin Caron's film and Kristina Grozeva and Petar Valchanov's similarly themed 2014 thriller, The Lesson. Unhappily, Night Always Comes quickly abandons its real-world dilemma as it swerves into low-life criminality. Lynette juggles prostitution, bartending and cocaine dealing as she encounters safe-crackers, low-lives and Eli Roth's sleazy, ill-defined kingpin. READ MORE Despite valiant efforts from Stephen James and Michael Kelly – playing an ill-defined hoodlum and a procurer, respectively – Lynette's low-income hinterland feels strained and inauthentic. [ Film-maker Dag Johan Haugerud: From laid-off librarian to Golden Bear-winning director of the Oslo Stories trilogy Opens in new window ] The overture talks about ordinary Americans falling through the cracks due to one outsized bill or missed payment; the world onscreen groans with worn-out crime-movie tropes. The film seems unable to differentiate between penury and cop-show-brand lawlessness. Kirby, who also served as a producer, gives it socks as her embattled heroine gets robbed, swindled, glassed and sexually assaulted. Not even she can make contrived meetings with her former pimp or the theme-park poverty feel authentic. Streaming on Netflix from 8am on Friday, August 15th

What Year Does FANTASTIC FOUR: FIRST STEPS Take Place? Director Matt Shakman Talks About MCU Timeline — GeekTyrant
The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been a tangled web of timelines, variants, and multiversal madness for nearly two decades now. With the release of The Fantastic Four: First Steps , things just got a little more puzzling. Not only is the movie set in an alternate reality, Earth-828 rather than the primary Earth-616, but it's also a full-blown period piece. So when exactly does it take place? Director Matt Shakman finally offered some answers. During a recent chat with CinemaBlend, Shakman broke down the thought process behind the film's unique setting. While watching Fantastic Four: First Steps , you may have noticed there was calendar or a date mentioned. Shakman said: 'In terms of the year, we are purposefully vague about it. But when we were organizing ourselves from a design standpoint, it was 1965. This was the year that we used for clothing, for cars, for New York in terms of referencing things. 'And that's really due to the fact that we wanted to be middle of the decade in terms of, you know, things start to change to get to more 70s as you get to the end of the 60s, and we didn't want it to feel too much vestigial 50s either. And so early 60s has that.' So while the movie doesn't explicitly state the year, all signs point to 1965. The style, fashion, cars, and overall retrofuturist vibe were all anchored in that mid-60s era. But that wasn't the only thing shaping the aesthetic. Shakman revealed that one major influence behind the look of Fantastic Four: First Steps was the 1964 World's Fair in New York City. Even though it's not directly mentioned in the film, the event inspired the city's retrofuturistic architecture and tech. 'So solidly in the middle, just kind of after the World's Fair in New York City. That was one of our touchstones, which was, 'What if the World's Fair out in Queens was actually all over the city?' You know, saucer shaped buildings, monorails, flying cars, all that idea.' Now, with Avengers: Doomsday on the horizon and the Fantastic Four confirmed to be joining forces with the mainline heroes the question becomes: how do these 1965 heroes fit into the modern MCU? Multiversal travel? Definitely. Time travel? Not so much. Shakman shut down any theories about the team hopping through time to get to the present-day Marvel timeline. Their presence in Avengers: Doomsday will be thanks to the multiverse, not a DeLorean.

Fantastic Four First Steps post-credits scene explained: Here's what's making Marvel fans want to rewatch the film
Fantastic Four First Steps post-credits scene explained: Fantastic Four: First Steps has arrived with a new spin on Marvel's iconic superhero team, but it's the mid and post-credits scenes that are stealing all the attention. These two moments have created such a stir among fans that many are tempted to rewatch the film just for those sequences. Here's a complete breakdown of both scenes and what makes them the talk of the Marvel fandom. Fantastic Four First Steps mid-credits scene explained Four years after the epic showdown with Galactus, the scene shifts to a calm moment at the Baxter Building, where Sue Storm is reading a bedtime story to her young son, Franklin Richards. As she steps away to grab another book, she suddenly senses an unfamiliar presence. When she turns around, she sees a hooded figure crouched beside Franklin, holding the unmistakable metal mask of Doctor Doom, though his face remains hidden. The figure is clearly Doctor Victor Von Doom, marking his subtle introduction into the MCU and hinting at a deeper connection to Franklin, who is portrayed as a child with extraordinary cosmic abilities. Fantastic Four First Steps post-credits scene explained After the dramatic mid-credits reveal of Doctor Doom, the post-credits scene offers a nostalgic breather with a retro-style animated clip. Designed like a 1960s Fantastic Four cartoon, it shows the classic team battling old foes, complete with a vintage theme song and Ben Grimm's iconic 'It's clobberin' time!' The scene is a light-hearted Easter egg with no future plot hints, just a fun tribute to the team's comic book roots. Fantastic Four cast, crew and plot Fantastic Four: First Steps is directed by Matt Shakman, with the screenplay crafted by Josh Friedman, Eric Pearson, and the writing duo Jeff Kaplan and Ian Springer. The film stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn as the iconic superhero team. They're joined by Julia Garner, Sarah Niles, Mark Gatiss, Natasha Lyonne, Paul Walter Hauser, and Ralph Ineson in key supporting roles. Set in a retro-futuristic version of the 1960s, the story follows the Fantastic Four as they defend Earth from the cosmic threat of Galactus (played by Ineson), a powerful, world-consuming entity.
