'60s Singer and Songwriter Legend, 81, Marks Milestone of Meeting Fellow Icon With Epic Throwback Photo originally appeared on Parade. The '60s were truly a revolutionary time. From politics to music, it was an era that gave us some of the most prolific icons that would inevitably shape music and culture as we know it. Very seldom are the catalyst-moments caught on camera, but when they are, it's pretty rewarding. Singer and songwriter Joni Mitchell, 81, caught just that and shared it with the world, with a throwback photo of the milestone moment she met the late Leonard Cohen at the 1967 Newport Folk Festival. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Joni Mitchell (@jonimitchell) Fans felt privileged to be getting a glimpse of these priceless memories. "Both have lyrics that read like poetry," wrote one fan. "So young, beautiful and talented! Their voices and poetry will never leave my heart," added another. "I could drink a case of you both," another cleverly commented. The late '60s meeting was the beginning of a brief but intense romantic relationship between the two talents. It would be the inspiration behind several works including Mitchell's "Rainy Night House" which Mitchell once confirmed to Far Out Magazine was about Cohen. 'Yeah. I went one time to his home, and I fell asleep in his old room, and he sat up and watched me sleep," she claimed. "He sat up all night, and he watched me see who in the world I could be.' Her iconic ballad "Case of You" is also rumored to be about him, but was never publicly confirmed to. It's also believed that "Winter Lady" was Cohen's ode to two maintained a long friendship despite their brief romance, until Cohen died in 2016. 🎬SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox🎬 '60s Singer and Songwriter Legend, 81, Marks Milestone of Meeting Fellow Icon With Epic Throwback Photo first appeared on Parade on Jul 17, 2025 This story was originally reported by Parade on Jul 17, 2025, where it first appeared.

Kristen Stewart's directorial debut receives standing ovation
Kristen Stewart's directorial debut, The Chronology of Water , made a powerful splash at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. The film earned a heartfelt standing ovation that lasted over four minutes. The film premiered in the prestigious Un Certain Regard section, marking a bold new chapter for the acclaimed actor turned filmmaker. Based on Lidia Yuknavitch's 2011 memoir, the film is a raw and poetic exploration of trauma, addiction, and healing. It follows Yuknavitch's journey from a promising childhood swimming career to a tumultuous adulthood marked by abuse and substance dependency. Stewart's non-linear storytelling captures the fragmented nature of memory and recovery. It blends painful realities with moments of grace found in water's embrace, according to Far Out Magazine. Imogen Poots delivers a standout performance as Yuknavitch, supported by notable actors including Thora Birch. Stewart co-wrote the screenplay with Yuknavitch's husband, Andy Mingo. This ensures the film remains faithful to the memoir's fragmented, stream-of-consciousness style. After the screening, Stewart, dressed casually in a white suit and baseball cap, embraced her cast and crew. She then took the microphone from Cannes director Thierry Frémaux and shared an emotional, candid speech. 'This is an insane, surreal experience to be here and watch this with all of you. We finished the movie like five minutes ago, it's not even finished yet. We just slipped under this shut door, thank you.' She then leapt into Fremaux's arms, a spontaneous display of joy and relief. Stewart has nurtured this project for seven years, overcoming numerous obstacles to bring it to life. 'Even though it took a long time, it was something that I wasn't going to stop until it happened, because there was just no other reason to live.' This passion and perseverance shine through in the film's uncompromising vision. While the UK release date remains unannounced, South African cinephiles can anticipate a film that challenges and moves them deeply. Stewart's debut is not just a milestone for her career but a significant contribution to cinema that honours the complexity of lived experience. As Stewart herself said, The Chronology of Water is about 'birth, death, and rebirth… the biggest wound of my creative life so far. By far my favourite scar.' It's a film that refuses to be ignored – much like its creator. The Chronology of Water is a must-watch for those who appreciate cinema that confronts harsh truths with artistry and heart. Kristen Stewart has truly made waves, both behind and in front of the camera. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1.
