‘Humiliated' Kadodia awaits PSL to confirm Durban City's promotion

After the protests against Durban City were dismissed on Monday and the club officially promoted to the Betway Premiership, chair Farook Kadodia says he has never endured such humiliation in his administrative career as being denied the trophy in the final day. City are finally the official champions of the Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) after an arbitration dismissed two cases against them. The trophy and prize money were not presented to the Durban club after they clinched the title in the final game with a 1-0 win against Cape Town Spurs at Athlone Stadium on May 18 that also relegated their opposition. The Premier Soccer League (PSL) said then a trophy would not be presented pending cases brought by JDR Stars and Spurs over the alleged improper registration of winger Saziso Magawana by the KwaZulu-Natal team.

We always knew we were innocent, says Durban City chairman Farook Kadodia

Durban City's Farook Kadodia, second left, could finally celebrate promotion to the PSL after the club was cleared of all wrongdoing earlier this week, ending a tense legal battle and securing the 2024/25 MFC title. Photo: Backpagepix Image: Backpagepix After weeks of legal wrangling and off-field drama, Durban City can finally breathe a sigh of relief — and start dreaming big. Cleared of all wrongdoing in a high-stakes player registration dispute, the newly crowned Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) winners are now set to take their place in South Africa's top flight for the 2025/26 season. City were officially found not guilty regarding the eligibility of one of their players on Tuesday after they were twice forced to defend themselves in disciplinary proceedings. JDR Stars lodged a protest in May, claiming that Saziso Magawana, who had joined from Marumo Gallants, had been improperly registered when he moved to the club. The PSL's Disciplinary Committee investigated the matter and dismissed the complaint. Stars exercised their right to appeal, this time joined by relegation-threatened Cape Town Spurs, but this past week their appeal was also dismissed by Safa arbitration. City were finally awarded the MFC title and secured their place in the Betway Premiership next season. As a result of the failed protest, both JDR Stars and the Cape side were ordered to cover all the expenses arising from their actions against City and the player involved. Following the final ruling, City chairman Farook Kadodia expressed his satisfaction with the outcome. 'The outcome of the arbitration was what we expected,' Kadodia told Independent Newspapers on Wednesday. 'We were basically embarrassed in relation to the arbitration and dispute resolution chamber, even though we had already won our initial case with the PSL. The matter went to arbitration, and the outcome was very clear.' Kadodia added that, despite the team's efforts throughout the season, they were denied the chance to enjoy the celebrations they had earned. 'It was really disappointing that the players weren't able to celebrate with the trophy and be officially recognised as champions on the pitch,' he said. 'I haven't spoken to anyone from the PSL yet — my only communication has been with Safa. I'm still not sure whether there will be any formal trophy celebrations.' 'You put in so much work all season long, and when you finally achieve something meaningful, you want to enjoy it. Then you go home. Some players are still around because they were waiting for the result of the case.' The chairman also emphasised that the verdict came as no surprise to the club, as they had always maintained their innocence and followed the correct procedures.

Kadodia upset Durban City denied Motsepe trophy over Magawana issue

Durban City chair Farook Kadodia insists that they registered Saziso Magawana properly, saying he is disappointed the Premier Soccer League chose not to hand his team the trophy for winning the Motsepe Foundation Championship (MFC) on Sunday. City beat Cape Town Spurs 1-0 at Athlone Stadium on the final day of the MFC to clinch the title on the final day but were not crowned champions. This was because JDR Stars lodged a complaint against City months ago, arguing the KwaZulu-Natal side's talismanic winger Magawana, who played 27 games for them this season, was improperly registered. 'That is a huge disappointment for us and, again, it is one of the obstacles I believe are taking place. We have all the registrations done properly,' Kadodia said. 'There is no issue with our registrations, there is no fraud in this matter and I am still surprised people are trying to find how they can interfere and take the championship trophy away from us.

Durban City on the brink of promotion as relegation battle heats up

Farook Kadodia, chairman of Durban City, could soon enjoy the emotions of his club being promoted to the Betway Premiership. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Durban City's persistence throughout the 2024/25 NFD Motsepe Foundation Championship season is on the verge of paying off, with promotion to the Betway Premiership now firmly within their grasp — unless a dramatic twist unfolds on the final day. Orbit College are the only team still mathematically capable of overtaking the KwaZulu-Natal side, but they face a daunting task in their final match against already relegated Leruma United. To leapfrog City, Orbit would need to score at least six goals. City have been impressive across the campaign, losing just six of their 29 matches and boasting the league's highest goal tally (43), giving them a comfortable cushion heading into what promises to be a tense final round. With Orbit having already secured a play-off spot after all four teams beneath them dropped points over the weekend, the spotlight could soon shift to the scrap for survival at the foot of the table. Leruma United have officially been relegated, but the real drama lies ahead as the relegation picture becomes clearer in the closing round. 12th I Hungry Lions P29 W8 D9 L12 GD1 Pts33 Remaining fixture: Casric Stars Both sides will be coming off draws when they clash in the final round of the season, and the same result could be enough for Lions to avoid any final-day disappointment. Their goal difference, however, gives them the edge over their competitors. 13th I Upington City P29 W7 D11 L11 GD-3 Pts32 Remaining fixture: Highbury FC Before their 2-0 victory over the University of Pretoria, Upington City had endured a rough stretch, managing just one win in their last ten outings — a 2-1 victory over Pretoria Callies back in February. Despite the slump, the Northern Cape side still has a chance to end their season on a stronger note and add to their seven wins. Their final fixture against Highbury FC will be a must-win clash if they aim to keep their fate in their hands. 14th I Venda FC P29 W7 D9 L13 GD-4 Pts30 Remaining fixture: Kruger United Teetering in 14th place only by virtue of goal difference, Venda FC face a daunting end to their Motsepe Foundation Championship campaign, with their final fixture against fifth-placed Kruger United. The Limpopo-based club has managed just one win in their last five outings — a slump that now dangerously flirts with relegation. With the margin for error narrowing, they'll need to find form fast against a United side that will want to finish their season on a high after missing out on the promotion playoff battle. 15th I Cape Town Spurs P29 W6 D12 L11 GD-5 Pts30 Remaining fixture: Durban City The Cape side is facing two consecutive relegations in two seasons following their relegation in the Premier Soccer League last season. Currently 15th on the log, Spurs have to navigate a tricky final fixture against a Hungry Lions side they beat 2-1 in the first leg in what could be a winner-takes-all affair. They will rue their missed opportunity to gain some points after their 1-1 draw with Hungry Lions last weekend as they get ready to face high-flying Durban City in their final fixture.

Durban City all but secure PSL promotion!

Durban City are on the verge of securing their promotion to the Betway Premiership from the Motsepe Foundation Championship. On Sunday, City beat Black Leopards 3-2 to move to 55 points after 29 league games, and they now need a point to be promoted. Durban City, formerly known as Maritzburg United, were relegated from the last season. And soon after that, their working relationship with the Umgungundlovu Municipality went sour. The relegation saw the Municipality pull the plug on a three-year deal sponsorship and lease agreement. That's when Farook Kadodia moved to Durban to raname Maritzburg United, and use Chatsworth Stadium for their home games. Now, having recently lost Sinamandla Zondi, Durban City have nonetheless shown enough hunger to gain automatic promotion. Meanwhile, Orbit College, who are three points behind Durban City, have sealed their spot in the playoffs. They lead third-placed Casric Stars by a whopping seven points going into their final match of the season.
