FHP: Late-night head-on crash on U.S. 98 bridge shreds SUVs; 2 dead, 1 hurt

In a horrifying late-night crash, one SUV collided with another on the U.S. 98 bridge between Eastpoint and Apalachicola, leaving both drivers dead and one passenger in serious condition. The Florida Highway Patrol said the wreck happened around midnight going into June 14. An SUV driven by a 35-year-old man from Tennessee was heading west toward Apalachicola on the John Gorrie Memorial Bridge, an FHP news release said. Another SUV driven by a 29-year-old Carrabelle woman with a 28-year-old woman, also of Carrabelle, in the passenger seat was heading east toward Eastpoint. The Tennessee man, who was not wearing a seat belt, tried to pass another vehicle in front of him, troopers said, putting him directly into the oncoming path of the two women. Both had seatbelts on. The two SUVs smashed into each other, causing each to spin out and wind up in the shoulder of the roadway. Photos provided by FHP show one of the SUVs crumpled and shredded from the front left side in. The estimated speeds of the vehicles was not released. FHP does not name victims of wrecks in news releases. No other information was immediately available. Troopers were assisted on scene by the Franklin County Sheriff's Office, Franklin County EMS, Apalachicola city police and firefighters and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
