Morocco records 18% rise in H1 tourists

A surge in investments ahead of the 2030 FIFA world cup games coupled with tourism promotion campaigns boosted the number of tourists visiting Morocco by nearly 19 percent in the first half of 2025. In a statement published on Thursday, the ministry of tourism said Morocco welcomed 8.9 million tourists in the first half of 2025, representing an additional 1.4 million tourists compared to the same period last year. The ministry said this number confirms Morocco's position as a top travel destination, maintaining an upward trend. The month of June contributed to the achievement with 1.7 million arrivals, an 11 percent increase compared to last year. This year's June is the best recorded to date, the statement said, noting that the news marks a positive start to the summer season. 'These results confirm Morocco's attractiveness and our ability to draw an increasing number of tourists,' Tourism Minister Fatim-Zahra Ammor said. She noted that the second half of this year focuses on top priorities like strengthening air connectivity and accelerating the development of accommodation and entertainment offerings to meet the expectations of an increasingly demanding clientele. Morocco has been strengthening its position in the sector by breaking records and welcoming millions of tourists throughout the year and across all seasons. The North African country recorded the arrival of 17.4 million tourists last year, representing a 20 percent increase compared to 2023. Morocco averaged $3.5 billion in FDI annually across all sectors, UN Tourism said, stressing that the country is now Africa's most-visited nation, surpassing Egypt. ONMT, China Eastern Airlines Sign Agreement to Boost Morocco's Appeal in Chinese Market

Rabat – The Moroccan National Tourist Office (ONMT) and the airline China Eastern Airlines signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday in Rabat, confirming the growing strategic importance of the Asian market in Morocco. Minister of Tourism Fatim Zahra Ammor, ONMT Director General Achraf Fayda and China Eastern Airlines President Wang Zhinqing chaired the signing ceremony. The partnership includes a marketing strategy as well as joining actions, press trips, and seeking to boost Morocco's appeal as a premier tourist destination in the Chinese market. The agreement also aims to optimize air connections to Morocco. The Minister of Tourism emphasized the importance of the partnership, stressing the country's ambition to position itself as an exceptional destination for travelers from across the world. 'With China Eastern, we are strengthening our presence in Asia and reaffirming our diversification strategy,' Ammor said. Fayda also highlighted the importance of the agreement, noting that the cooperation is based on a long-term, ambitious vision for tourism development. ONMT aims to attract at least one million Chinese tourists by 2030. 'His partnership with China Eastern reflects our ability to forge strategic alliances with major players in global air transport,' Fayda added, noting ONMT's commitment to opening Morocco to the most dynamic and demanding markets. The signing of the partnership follows China Eastern's launch of the Shanghai-Casablanca air route via Marseille in January 2025. In October, a direct route will also be launched with a frequency of three flights per week. With this new air route, Casablanca will be connected to China's main outbound tourism hub, in addition to the direct Beijing-Casablanca line operated by Royal Air Maroc. Tags: Business TourismChina

Morocco's Tourism Revenues Reach $887.59 Million in January

Rabat – New data from Morocco's Exchange Office shows that tourism revenues saw an increase of 10.1% in January, reflecting a continuous positive trend. The statistics show tourism revenues reached MAD 8.78 billion ($887.59) – an additional MAD 808 million ( $81.6 million) recorded compared to the same period in 2024. This is attributed to the influx of 1,25,197 visitors to Morocco recorded in January – a number that shows a 27% year-on-year increase. Last month, Morocco's Ministry of Tourism elevated the growing appeal of Morocco as a primary destination, recalling national efforts to put the North African country on the global tourism map. Minister of Tourism Fatim Zahra Ammor said Morocco has established itself as a 'true four-season destination,' with the numbers mirroring a 'major qualitative goal for our roadmap.' The country celebrated a tourism boom last year, welcoming 17.4 million visitors in 2024, a 20% increase compared to 2023 and far exceeding the target set for 2026. The ministry attributed the increase in arrivals to Moroccans residing abroad (MREs), who flocked to the country during the summer season in record-breaking figures. Morocco's tourism industry recorded a remarkable $11.1 billion in revenues last year. The North African country recently launched a series of initiatives, setting sights on different markets to attract millions of tourists. One of the recent campaigns was in January, when Morocco's Tourism Office (ONMT) announced that it is ready to turn Rabat into a 'fully fledged ' tourist destination. Later in February, ONMT also announced it is strengthening ties with China's tourism market – a country that has established itself as a global leader in outbound tourism, with 155 million international trips recorded in 2019.
