Cookies sold at Target recalled in 20 states over contamination with ‘foreign material'
(NEXSTAR) – More than 12,000 packages of sugar cookies sold at Target have been categorized under a Class II recall by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over potential contamination with a 'foreign material.' The recall concerned 10-count packages of Favorite Day Bakery Frosted Sugar Cookies produced by the Give and Go Prepared Foods Corp of Etobicoke, Canada, according to the FDA. The reason for the recall was listed as 'foreign material (wood).' Representatives for Target, Give & Go or the FDA were not immediately available to confirm whether there had been any reports of injuries. Give and Go first initiated the recall on July 22, 2025. On Aug. 4, the FDA categorized the recall as a Class II, meaning the use of the recalled product 'may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,' even if 'the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.' The FDA also confirmed the cookies had been shipped to distribution centers in three states — Connecticut, Maryland and Ohio — and sold at retail outlets in 20 states and DC: Connecticut, Washington DC, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Tennessee, Virginia and Vermont. The cookies can be identified by the UPC 85239-41250 and the lot number 25195. The 'best by' dates on the recalled items 'can vary as they are applied by retailer when removed from freezer,' according to the FDA. A representative for Target said customers with affected Favorite Day products may be able to can bring the items back to the store, with a receipt, for a full refund.

Major grocery chain gives 1000s of customers free ice cream
Hot summer days are the perfect time to relax with a nice serving of ice cream. For some communities, the sound of music playing from an ice cream truck prompts children, teens, and parents to race to the curb of their street to stop the truck to buy a frozen treat before it passes by. Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter For those areas lacking a local ice cream truck, a trip to Baskin-Robbins, Cold Stone Creamery, or Dairy Queen might be the solution to that frozen treat craving. Related: Major grocery chain using self-driving robots for deliveries If one of those options is not available, a trip to the local grocery store to buy some ice cream will solve your problem. And consumers have several choices to consider when buying that refreshing treat. Name-brand ice cream choices that you can find at most grocery stores include Dreyer's (known as Eddy's in some areas), Breyers, Ben & Jerry's, Blue Bunny, Tillamook, and Häagen-Dazs. The competition for ice cream sales is so fierce that many national and regional grocery chains and big-box retailers have their own private label brands to entice consumers. For Costco members, Kirkland Signature ice cream, with a limited number of flavors, is available. Target in 2021 launched its private label ice cream brand Favorite Day, and Walmart launched its latest private label ice cream in April 2024 to go with its Great Value brand, known as bettergoods. The private label offers dairy and plant-based options for customers. To compete with the big boxes, national and regional grocery chains offer private labels to consumers as well. Publix stores offer their Premium brand of ice cream, as well as their organic GreenWise brand. Albertsons, Vons, and Safeway stores have for years sold their Signature Select private label, and Whole Foods offers its 365 private label brand. Target expands private label offerings through chef partnership
Dive Brief: Target announced Wednesday it has teamed up with James Beard Award-winning pitmaster Rodney Scott to launch 12 co-branded products for the retailer's Good & Gather Good & Gather Collabs + Rodney Scott collection features barbecue goods such as Carolina-style appetizers, relish, sauces, honey-flavored cornbread and muffin mix, and brown sugar baked collaboration marks Target's second time co-branding food items under its private label line as the retailer works to ramp up its offerings under its grocery brands. Dive Insight: The new collaboration comes at the beginning of the summer merchandising season, when consumers look to retailers for supplies to fuel their cookouts. All of the products under the new collab are under $9, with a majority under $4, Target said. An unspecified number of items under the collab will have a starting price of $2.99 for a limited time, according to the retailer. The items will be sold in stores and online starting June 1. Scott, who grew up in South Carolina, has "perfected the art of whole-hog BBQ" and brings a positive attitude, Target said. Target launched its first Good & Gather Collabs earlier this year with fellow James Beard Award-winning chef and restaurateur Ann Kim. That line featured frozen pizzas and appetizers. Grocery, and especially private label grocery, is playing a key role in Target's summer plans. Earlier this month, Target included grocery items in its plans to add more than 10,000 items to its assortment this summer, with thousands priced below $20. The retailer has also planned in-store seasonal displays, including The Boardwalk Shop, a food and beverage destination featuring seasonal treats such as red, white and blue snacks and limited-time build-your-own s'mores kits. Target has also announced seasonal private label items like beef burger patties and several Favorite Day items, such as tart cherry ice cream, dill pickle pretzel twists and hot chili lime popcorn. Launched in 2019, Good & Gather is Target's top-selling private brand, with more than 2,500 items that are free from artificial flavors, synthetic colors, artificial sweeteners and high fructose corn syrup. Food and beverage was a bright spot in Target's first quarter as nearly all other categories recorded declines in sales during the period. Net and comparable-store sales were down 2.8% and 3.8%, respectively, for the quarter, the retailer reported earlier this month. Copyright 2025 Industry Dive. All rights reserved.

Grocers kickstart summer with value
Grocers are turning up the heat on savings with the rapid approach of Memorial Day weekend and summer. Seasonal deals are a tried-and-true way grocers work to build customer loyalty, and as consumer price sensitivity remains prevalent, Memorial Day and the upcoming summer months present an opportunity for grocers to underscore that they offer the value their shoppers crave. Kroger's Memorial Day savings deal centers on backyard grilling and private label. The grocer is offering a bundle that feeds 16 people at $3.50 a head and includes barbeque staples like burger patties, buns, cheese, baked beans and potato chips and more, with some of the items carrying the grocer's name brand. This isn't the first time Kroger has leaned on grilling to construct the ideal summer value package. Last summer, Kroger created a grilling bundle for the Fourth of July that provided shoppers with all the essentials for an Independence Day barbeque for $4 a person. On Thursday, Natural Grocers kicked off a Memorial Day savings initiative that's running through Sunday with price reductions on staple summer-event food items like hot dogs, sandwich breads, potato chips, grilling rub and sparkling water, according to the press release. Members of the grocer's {N}power loyalty program have access to additional offers during the same time period on items such as ground beef, condiments and smoked bacon as well as 10% off alcohol purchases at select stores. Meal bundles are also up for grabs for these customers, including a Burger Meal Deal available until the end of September that feeds a party of four for under $14 total. Natural Grocers' decision to offer extra discounts to its loyalty program members underscores how the specialty grocer continues to lean into its membership program to drive more value. Last week, Target announced it is looking to "make the most of every summer moment" with the launch of 10,000 new products between May and August that include groceries, beauty products and home goods. Food and beverage items part of the launch ahead of Father's Day include pre-seasoned burgers and sparkling water under the Good & Gather brand; new ice cream flavors like tart cherry blast and peach cobbler; and seasonal snacks including chili lime popcorn and honey mustard pretzel twists under the Favorite Day line. The retailer is also introducing "Hello Summer Saturdays" every Saturday in June at all of its stores. The in-store event will include free giveaways for Target Circle members and weekly limited-time Target Circle offers on goods like Favorite Day foods and summer toys and clothing. Target also has a summer food display dubbed "The Boardwalk Shop," which will serve as a "destination featuring seasonal treats," according to the announcement. Copyright 2025 Industry Dive.
