Central Cee has made history at the MOBO Awards, becoming the first artist to be named Best Male Act three times. Despite his major achievement, Central Cee did not attend the ceremony in Newcastle. Host Eddie Kadi accepted the award on his behalf, joking that they 'share everything… except royalties.' Reacting to his win on Instagram, Cench shared a simple caption: 'that's nice.' Other big winners of the night included Darkoo, who claimed Best Female Act, beating out Raye and Jorja Smith. She also won Song of the Year for Favourite Girl, her collaboration with Dess Dior. During her acceptance speech, Darkoo humorously admitted she had attempted to use ChatGPT to write her speech but opted to freestyle instead, thanking her family for their support. Bashy made a triumphant return to music after a 15-year break, winning Album of the Year for Being Poor Is Expensive and Best Hip-Hop Act. The artist, known for his acting career, reflected on his journey, encouraging aspiring musicians to persevere despite challenges. Ayra Starr made history as the first African woman to win Best International Act and became the first female artist in 16 years to claim Best African Music Act. Vybz Kartel received the MOBO Impact Award, addressing his incarceration and recent legal battles while accepting the honor. MOBO founder Kanya King, recently diagnosed with stage four bowel cancer, received a surprise Paving the Way Award. Central Cee has made history at the Mobo Awards, becoming the first artist to be named best male act three times. It was the rapper's seventh trophy, matching Stormzy's record as the most decorated rapper in the awards' history. He did not attend the awards to collect his award in person, which was instead collected on his behalf by host Eddie Kadi who joked they "share everything... except royalties".The ceremony in Newcastle also saw Bashy claim best album and best hip-hop act after a 15-year break from music and Darkoo beat off competition from Raye and Jorja Smith to be recognised as best female act. Accepting her award, Darkoo said she "tried Chat GPT" to write her speech "but I didn't know how to make it work", so instead freestyled her speech thanking her family for supporting her."It's been a rollercoaster but they believed in me for the past year and I've been shutting it down." Cental Cee, also known as Cench, was previously named best male act in 2024 and released his debut album last month after eight top 10 to his win on Instagram, he posted a screenshot of the awards' coverage with the comment "that's nice".He missed out on his other two nominations including best drill act, which went to Pozer, and song of the year which was won by Darkoo alongside her trophy for best female act. Despite not making breaking into the UK singles charts, the British-Nigerian artist won for Favourite Girl, a collab with Dess Dior, ahead of Stormzy's number one track with Chase & Status, Backbone, as well as Central Cee's collab with Lil Baby, Band4Band, which peaked at number three. Ayra Starr also scooped two awards, making history as the first African woman to win best international act and becoming the first woman to win best African music act in 16 years. Jamaican dancehall artist Vybz Kartel was also recognised with the Mobo impact award. He was released from jail last year after his murder conviction was overturned and at the weekend was confirmed to be performing at this summer's Wireless festival. "Think about this, got locked up, did 13 years in prison," he said while accepting his accolade. "Meanwhile I'm diagnosed with Graves' disease so I'm fighting to be free, I'm fighting my illness, I'm fighting to keep my family together, I'm fighting to keep the fans pleased."And now I'm here, I walked the red carpet at the Mobo's. That taught me to believe in three things now more than ever: fate, change and forgiveness." The ceremony saw performances from Nova Twins, Spice, Krept And Konan and award winners Odeal, Darkoo and who returned to music after a 15-year break to focus on his acting career, won best hip-hop act as well as album of the year for Being Poor Is Expensive - an award he said he "wanted and deserved"."This has been a 20-year plus journey, it's been hard work, tenacity, a lot of ups and downs. "I stood in my truth, stood in my community's truth and now I'm here," he said on stage, making a point to thank the Windrush generation. "I'm just a regular guy from the ends. I was a bus driver, I was a postman, I worked in retail. So if you're out there and you're working a job to fund your passion, don't be ashamed of your job. "This is an amazing honour, I'm humbled." It was the first awards since Mobos founder Kanya King revealed she'd been diagnosed with stage four bowel MP Dawn Butler became emotional as she announced Kanya would receive a surprise award, paving the way, which was also won by athlete and broadcaster Denise Lewis. Kanya came on stage to a standing ovation from the crowd, saying she felt an overwhelming sense of gratitude "because there was a time I thought I wouldn't make it"."Next year marks our 30th anniversary and I very much intend to be there." MOBO award winners including Central Cee, Bashy and Darkoo revealed at ceremony in Newcastle

Central Cee, Darkoo and Bashy are among the big winners at this year's MOBO Awards. The ceremony took place in Newcastle this evening, with Krept & Konan, Bashy, Spice, and Nova Twins among the performers. Central Cee was named best male act, while Darkoo was named best female and picked up the MOBOs ' song of the year award for Favourite Girl, featuring Dess Dior. Bashy's Being Poor Is Expensive was crowned the best album winner, and the actor and rapper was also named best hip-hop act. A special gong was handed out to athlete Denise Lewis, who took home the "paving the way" prize, recognising trailblazers across different industries including sports, media and entertainment, as well as music. She follows previous winners such as Idris Elba, Sir Lenny Henry, Nicola Adams, and the late Jamal Edwards. "King of dancehall" Vybz Kartel was also honoured with the MOBOs impact award. "The MOBO Awards have always been about recognising and celebrating cultural pioneers who have reshaped the landscape of music and beyond," said MOBOs founder Kanya King ahead of the ceremony. "Denise Lewis is a true inspiration and it's an absolute pleasure to honour such a legendary figure. Few people have contributed more to their field in this country." She went on to say that Vybz Kartel's impact on music was "immeasurable", with an influence extending "beyond the world of dancehall, in which he is a musical giant". Odeal was named best newcomer and also took the best R&B/soul act prize, while Ayra Starr also picked up two - best African music act and best international act. Other genre category awards included best jazz act for 2023 Mercury Prize winners Ezra Collective, best grime act for Scorcher, best drill act for Pozer, best electronic/dance act for TSHA, best gospel for Annatoria, best Caribbean music act for Shenseea, and best alternative music act for ALT BLK ERA. Elsewhere, Juls was named best producer, 90s Baby Show won the media personality prize, video of the year went to Mnelia's My Man, and actor and musician Jacob Anderson was recognised in the best TV/film performance category, for his role in the series Interview With The Vampire. Central Cee, Raye, and Dave were among the big winners last year, with Soul II Soul, Sugababes and Ghetts receiving special achievement prizes. The MOBOs celebrate black music in the UK and internationally and will mark their 30th anniversary in 2026. In December, King revealed she had been but said she would continue to lead the organisation.
