Mamelodi Sundowns to hijack Kaizer Chiefs target in transfer twist

Mamelodi Sundowns are wasting no time preparing for the 2025/2026 season, with the club setting their sights on Stellenbosch FC's standout defender, Fawaaz Basadien. While they've confirmed they won't dip into the special transfer window, closing on 10 June, for the FIFA Club World Cup, the league champions are already making decisive moves behind the scenes. According to Soccer Laduma , Sundowns have surged ahead of rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the race to secure Basadien's signature. The left-back, recently crowned Stellenbosch's Player of the Season, currently features in the national squad for friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique. A source suggests he's now 'open to a new challenge, with Gauteng calling his name.' Basadien's experience with Stellenbosch FC and Bafana Bafana makes him a valuable asset for Sundowns. His exposure to continental competition positions him as an ideal reinforcement for coach Miguel Cardoso, who is aiming to lead the club back to CAF dominance. 'Sundowns want Basadien,' confirmed a source. 'He's gained continental experience and fits what they need. Chiefs still think they have a chance, but what I'm hearing is that Fawaaz will join Sundowns.' The pursuit signals Sundowns' intent to strengthen their squad with proven local talent, especially as they aim to build momentum after the Club World Cup. With Basadien potentially arriving at Chloorkop, changes are expected in Sundowns' defensive line-up. Terrence Mashego is reportedly on his way out, despite news about the club triggering a contract extension clause. Stellenbosch FC have shown strong interest in the left-back, intensifying speculation around his future. 'So you saw the reports of Sundowns triggering (Terrence) Mashego's contract,' the source added. 'Also they got Divine Lunga, (Aubrey) Modiba, and the boy from Sekhukhune United (Asekho Tiwani). Now they want Basadien, where will he play?' While some clubs scramble during the short transfer window, Sundowns are operating with quiet efficiency. Their early moves hint at a broader strategy to solidify their dominance in South African football and prepare for another strong continental campaign. Their ability to attract a player of Basadien's calibre, while fending off Soweto giants, underlines their continued pulling power. If the deal is completed post-Club World Cup, it could prove one of the defining transfers of the upcoming season. Should Basadien go to Mamelodi Sundowns with all the competition in his position? Two Kaizer Chiefs targets among the best in Africa

There's no question that Kaizer Chiefs are after quality players this time. Two of Amakhosi's primary targets for next season rank among the best players on the continent. Stellenbosch FC and Simba SC were among the CAF Confederation's final four teams from last season, two names familiar to the Kaizer Chiefs nation. As revealed in local media and East Africa over the past two months, Amakhosi are determined to sign Fawaaz Basadien and Denis Kibu. As announced by CAF, Stellenbosch's Basadien, who helped Stellies to the semifinals, was named the best left-back in the competition. Another Kaizer Chiefs target, Kibu, was recognised as the best right winger. Orlando Pirates transfer news: Aziz Ki, Mayele, Nemtajela, Letlapa

Orlando Pirates are all-systems go ahead of the upcoming offseason window. It was a disastrous summer transfer period for the Buccaneers, who failed to land any talent albeit in talks with several stars, including Oswin Appollis and Fawaaz Basadien – it appears they do not want a repeat, having reportedly already signed five players, including Sihle Nduli and Sinoxolo Kwayiba. Orlando Pirates are said to miss out on target Aziz Ki . The Young Africans forward is reportedly days away from signing with Wydad Athletic. . According to reports, Pirates have signed Marumo Gallants star Masindi Nemtajela. Priority target Vuyo Letlapa has attracted an R20 million bid from the French side of OGC Nice. It remains unclear whether the Sea Robbers will match it. 'There are local teams which have shown interest and Pirates were believed to be in the forefront to sign him but apparently the French Ligue 1 side OGC Nice is the one leading now,' Soccer Laduma noted. 'They are very close to closing the deal. Remember, we spoke about European interest before. And just like they did with Elias Mokwana to Esperance de Tunis, they are including a 30% sell on clause to the next club agreement on the deal.' 'So, if Nice sells Vuyo then Sekhukhune United will get 30% from that deal. That's why they are looking at R20m for now.' Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. 'It doesn't stop here', says Fawaaz Basadien after cleaning the floor at Stellenbosch FC awards

Fawaaz Basadien won both Stellenbosch FC's Players Player of the Season and Footballer of the Season awards. Picture: Zaahier Adams/Indepedent Media Image: Picture: Zaahier Adams/Indepedent Media Stellenbosch FC may yet lose their second successive Footballer of the Season to perennial Betway Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns, but right now Fawaaz Basadien is simply enjoying his crowning moment with the Maroons. Basadien was the big winner at the SFC Awards at the Allée Bleue Wine Estate on Tuesday evening. The skilful fullback was rewarded for his excellent performances throughout the 2024-25 season, where he played a prominent role in Stellies reaching a first-ever CAF Confederation Cup semi-final and MTN8 Final, claiming the coveted Players' Player of the Season and Footballer of the Season prizes. Basadien could potentially though follow in the footsteps of former ace Stellies striker Iqraam Rayners, who won the club's Footballer of the Season award last season, prior to his lucrative transfer to Sundowns. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ The 28-year-old's impressive form down the flanks and his educated left boot has long caught the attention of Gauteng's 'Big Three', namely Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, despite Basadien having penned a long-term contract extension at Stellies in February last year. It would therefore require Sundowns - or indeed one of the Soweto duo - to lay down a hefty transfer fee to acquire Basadien's services, especially since he's also become a Bafana Bafana regular under Belgian coach Hugo Broos the past season. Basadien, though, remains tight-lipped over his future movements and instead basked in the honour of rising to the top at Stellies, who had taken the risk of signing the then relatively unknown Grassy Park-born rookie from Moroka Swallows back in 2022. 'It's a privilege and honour to be recognised as the standout player in our whole team,' Basadien exclusively told the Indy Sport Show. 'I also want to pay tribute to my teammates. They are the ones who help me on the field and help me stand out. As a footballer, you want to achieve these things. 'For me, I haven't won many individual awards in the past, so it's an honour and privilege, as it's shown that I've been consistent and done well throughout the season.' The Stellenbosch FC prize winners. Picture: Zaahier Adams/Independent Media Image: Zaahier Adams/Independent Media Stellenbosch FC competed valiantly in their debut continental campaign with the winelands club beating Egyptian giants Zamalak in Cairo in the CAF Confederation Cup quarter-finals to qualify for a maiden semi-final berth. Although they eventually fell to Tanzanian outfit Simba FC, coached by fellow Capetonian Fadlu Davids, Basadien feels the African adventures have significantly aided his development. 'It was a very good experience for the club, and for us as players. Obviously, it was the first time we were in the CAF, so it wasn't easy,' he said. 'We started quite slow, lost our first two games, but we knew as a team we can achieve something special, even though it was our first season. 'We knew that we just needed to get one win, that will bring confidence all the way through the group stages. 'That first win was important for us, but what an experience it was to play all over Africa … Morocco, Egypt, Zanzibar … 'For us as players, that's where you dream of playing. But now that I've had the opportunity, it doesn't stop here!' Stellies close out their season against struggling neighbours Cape Town City on Saturday at the DHL Stadium. The derby has significant consequences for both teams with City battling to avoid the relegation playoffs, while Steve Barker's men are aiming to secure third position which will secure qualification to the CAF Confederation Cup again next season. The emotions could be running high for Basadien too as it could potentially be his last match in a maroon shirt, but right now all he wants to focus on is securing Stellies' continental future. 'It's a massive one to end the season,' he said. 'The derby!' 'We obviously want to finish third, so it's important for us to get the victory. That's our goal, to play in Africa again next season.' Mamelodi Sundowns to bid for Basadien but Chiefs not done

Mamelodi Sundowns are set to make a massive bid for Stellenbosch FC star Fawaaz Basadien. The left back has been a key figure at the Cape Winelands based side. Basadien's on field exploits this season have made him one of South Africa's top football talents. In 45 appearances across all competitions, he has scored seven goals and delivered eight assists. His ability to combine attacking flair with defensive solidity has been pivotal for Stellenbosch, contributing to several clean sheets. Now according to reports, Basadien is on his way to the Betway Premiership champions Masandawana. But we know Kaizer Chiefs has been admiring him for a long time, and even made another attempt in January which was not accepted. The latest is that Chiefs will hold out until the end but are also making provision for alternatives like Nkanyiso Shinga, who plays for FC Alverca in Portugal. 'The latest left back they are monitoring is (Nkanyiso)Shinga but to convince him to leave Portugal will take a lot, as his team was promoted to the top flight,' the source told The South African. 'The only good thing is that his contract is coming to an end this season. But what I'm hearing is that he is an important player for them. Also they might offer him a new contract. That's why they still have hope to sign Basadien, even though they know going up against Sundowns in a bidding war will be difficult.' However, if KaboYellow do capture the former Swallows fullback. Then players like Terrence Mashego at Mamelodi Sundowns and Divine Lunga might be an option for Kaizer Chiefs as well. Who will Fawaaz Basadien sign for? Chiefs or Sundowns?
