Amit Trivedi Reacts To Fawad Khan's Abir Gulaal Getting Stalled: ‘India First'

Last Updated: Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor's film Abir Gulaal was postponed indefinitely due to the Pahalgam attack and India-Pakistan tensions. Pakistani actor Fawad Khan's upcoming Bollywood film Abir Gulaal, also starring Vaani Kapoor, will not see a theatrical release in India. According to a source linked to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the decision follows the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, on April 22. In light of the incident, authorities opted to withhold the film's release. Composer Amit Trivedi, who worked on the film's soundtrack, doesn't regret the film getting stalled. 'The decision [to not release the film] was taken keeping India first and I am in support of it completely," the musician tells Hindustan Times. As a composer who dedicates considerable time and creative energy to crafting a film's soundtrack, how does it feel when the project doesn't get released? 'Yes, it hurts when a project faces trouble. Not just this film, but anything I work on with all the honesty and hard work becomes a part of me. So, a project getting stalled is bound to disappoint you. We make music for the audience and as artistes, that's all you want (your music to reach the fans). But in this case, the scenario was very different. My country comes first, above everything else," says Amit. Abir Gulaal was set to mark Fawad Khan's much-anticipated return to Bollywood after nearly a decade. The Pakistani actor, widely celebrated by Indian audiences, previously starred in three Hindi films — Khoobsurat (2014), Kapoor & Sons (2016), and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016). However, the industry dynamic changed significantly after the 2016 Uri terror attack. In its aftermath, associations such as the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA) and the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) imposed bans on Pakistani artists working in Indian films. While Fawad Khan's comeback with Abir Gulaal was already facing opposition from a few, the protests intensified after the terror attack in Pahalgam when Lashkar-linked terrorists opened fire on a group of tourists. The incident killed 27 people, and the Resistance Front (TRF), a Lashkar offshoot, took responsibility for the attack. First Published:

Composer Amit Trivedi on actor Fawad Khan's Abir Gulaal getting stalled: The decision was taken keeping India first

There was much anticipation around Fawad Khan and Vaani Kapoor-starrer Abir Gulaal, and its music caught the attention of moviegoers. The film was initially slated for a May 9 release, but was later postponed indefinitely following the Pahalgam attack and ensuing India-Pakistan diplomatic tensions. But composer Amit Trivedi, who worked on the film's soundtrack and also attended its music launch in Dubai, doesn't regret the film getting stalled. 'The decision [to not release the film] was taken keeping India first and I am in support of it completely,' the musician tells us, exclusively. As an artiste, who invests a lot of time and effort in putting together the soundtrack of a project, does it prick when the project doesn't see the light of the day? 'Yes, it hurts when a project faces trouble. Not just this film, but anything I work on with all the honesty and hard work becomes a part of me. So, a project getting stalled is bound to disappoint you. We make music for the audience and as artistes, that's all you want (your music to reach the fans). But in this case, the scenario was very different. My country comes first, above everything else,' says Amit, who also composed the music for Raid 2. Meanwhile, the musician is set to perform a fundraising concert in Mumbai tomorrow ahead of World No Tobacco Day (May 31) and to raise funds for cancer survivors. Presented by the Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA), Amit Trivedi Live! – Music For A Cause aims at spreading awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and raising vital funds for the treatment and rehabilitation of cancer patients. 'I am happy to perform such concerts whenever an opportunity presents itself. The treatment for cancer is very expensive and this is my way of doing my bit. I feel grateful that God chose me for a cause like this,' he ends.

But she worked with Fawad Khan: Ridhi Dogra says she was 'bullied' for taking a stand against Abir Gulaal after Pahalgam

The last month was filled with anxiety and dread as India and Pakistan were on the brink of a war following the terror attack in Pahalgam that left 26 dead. India's retaliatory Operation Sindoor against terror bases in Pakistan and Pak-occupied Kashmir led to Pakistan responding with artillery firing and drone attacks against many major Indian cities, particularly those close to the border. One heavily-targeted city was Jammu, home to actor Ridhi Dogra, among millions of others. In conversation with HT, the actor recalls the scary times. (Also read: Ridhi Dogra responds to backlash over working with Fawad Khan: 'We can open our arms and close them too when needed') "It was very scary," says Ridhi, who was born and brought up in Jammu, adding, "We were constantly in touch with my family in Jammu and our relatives in Amritsar. There was a complete blackout. They could see things in the sky from their homes. It's a big feeling of helplessness. I was just praying and crying, and also feeling grateful for our armed forces, who were there at the border. It was not anything you wish upon anybody. It was a very hard time." Ridhi adds that while Jammu and Kashmir has seen tensions and strife before, she took solace in how the entire country stood up with the region in solidarity. "This is not the first time there's been tension in the state. We have lived that. So many times we hear there is a bomb blast in Jammu outside some temple. That's where we live. For us, this is very big. The fact that our country has stepped up and taken a stand is also very big," says the actor. Ridhi was set to be seen in Abir Gulaal this month. The film saw her share screen with Vaani Kapoor and Pakistani actor Fawad Khan, making his Bollywood comeback after 9 years. But after the Pahalgam terror attack, the film's release was delayed indefinitely. Even though Ridhi supported the decision not to release the film in India, the actor says she was bullied on social media. She explains, "In the case of the film, I spoke for our country, and suddenly I was being bullied by saying 'arre but she worked with (Fawad Khan)'. But I was firm. Don't bully me. I am as much a citizen of this country as you. When I did that work, I was very mindful of the laws of our country. I didn't do anything illegal. And today, when we are in this situation, I feel I want to stand by my country, my armed forces. And not because I am anything important, but just because you all are too."
