Nagpur: With the monsoon setting in and multiple roads in the city turning dangerous due to ongoing infrastructure works, the city's traffic police have issued a strict warning to contractors over the lack of safety measures and the hazardous conditions at various project sites.
The warning comes in response to reports of roads dug up for pipeline and cable laying works being left muddy, uneven, and risky for both pedestrians and motorists.
TOI had recently highlighted that many contractors have been carrying out fresh digging of roads for laying pipelines and other works.
This despite the clear directives of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) commissioner Abhijeet Chaudhari's directives to stop any digging work by June 1.
However, the rampant violation continues.
A senior traffic department official informed that all ten traffic zones in the city were directed to ensure that safety protocols are followed at all construction sites.
"The risk of accidents increases during the rainy season, and with so many infrastructure projects underway, it is the contractors' responsibility to take all safety measures. When we grant permission for such works, we include conditions like the deployment of marshals and setting up safety signs.

If contractors neglect these and an accident occurs, they will face criminal action," said the official.
The warning doesn't apply only to govt agencies. Several private projects have also left roads covered with gravel and mud, posing serious threats to commuters, especially two-wheeler riders. In many cases, roads became almost unwalkable, with stagnant water and no visible safety barricades or signage.
Highlighting the seriousness of the issue, Fazlur Rahman Qureshi, a resident of Mominpura, pointed out that a pit dug by the NMC in front of Islamia Junior College School remains unfinished.
"With the arrival of Muharram-ul-Haram, a large number of people gather in the chowk for processions. The road has become muddy and dangerous. Children from the nearby school and college use it daily. This poses a constant risk of accidents," he said.
Similar situations have been reported from several other parts of the city, where infrastructure works have turned roads into hazard zones, prompting growing demands from citizens for accountability and urgent repairs.
