Cigars and Stetsons feature in a weekend of special events at Hastings
The summer of special events at Hastings Racecourse continues this weekend with 'Whisky Smoke' on Friday night, dedicated to an evening of fine cigars, whiskies, cognacs and beer, while Saturday afternoon features the second annual Country Club Festival. Whisky Smoke has become popular among the cool set looking for Friday night fun, with the evening described as, 'Like no other in Vancouver, combining a tasting event with a night out at the track.' Friday and Saturday's events are hosted by Feaster, the marketing folks behind Cup Day — the biggest day of the year at Hastings in terms of attendance and easily one of the biggest betting days of the season. 'We're excited to elevate the upcoming event to new heights of sophistication by curating a truly enhanced experience for all attendees,' said Adam Bloch, Feaster president. 'By extending the festivities into the late evening, under the Friday night lights, amid the racing action, we're aiming to create an unforgettable evening that'll leave everyone buzzing with excitement.' While Whisky Smoke is now well established, the Country Club Festival, marketed as 'Daisy Dukes and cowboy boots,' returns for a second year following a positive introduction 12 months ago. 'We're so excited to bring Country Club back to Vancouver,' said Bloch. 'The first year exceeded all expectations, and this time we're going even bigger. We're putting the spotlight on bold tequila cocktails, paired with all the good vibes of a classic country tailgate.' Special event days at the track work on a variety of levels. They increase the attendance, normally give a small boost to the betting handle and can also help to introduce horse racing to newcomers. It's not all upside, however, with the owners, trainers and regular racing fans banned from watching from the tarmac in front of the grandstand during both events. Neil Stajkowski, secretary of B.C.'s Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association, said: 'These special days can help showcase our sport to a wider audience,' he says, 'but, once again, the track operator (Great Canadian Gaming Corp.), which uses horse racing to promote these profitable stand-alone events, refuses to include in any event planning the people actually putting on the show! This has led to owners, trainers, backstretch workers and race fans feeling unwanted at the track they help to finance through their ongoing support of racing.' Whether they're squinting through cigar haze, or craning necks to see over a forest of Stetsons, fans who know their racing will be particularly excited to see the final three races on Friday, which feature some of the toughest and most loved equine athletes at Hastings. The three contests feature 20 veteran campaigners who, between them, have won 135 races and close to $1.5 million in purses. Those impressive stats underline the dedication and professionalism that goes into ensuring horses receive the level of care required to perform for those in the stands — and that's not blowing smoke. Friday, Aug. 8: First post, 7 p.m. Race 3. The veteran of 40 races, Pineapple Tidbits remains among the most consistent performers on the East Van oval. She hasn't missed the board all season and goes for her 12th lifetime win. Race 4: Queen of Attitude continues to enthrall fans with her come-from-behind exploits. She'll again be looking to mow down her rivals late as she chases a remarkable 16th career win on what will be her 29th start.

Five-star wide receiver committs to USC over LSU and Texas A&M
LSU football lost out on one of its top prospects in the 2026 cycle. Wide receiver Ethan "Boobie" Feaster committed to USC on Friday, per Rivals' Hayes Fawcett. "Let's do it! I heard they do it better out west!" Feaster said. Feaster chose the Trojans out of a top three that also included the Tigers and Texas A&M. The DeSoto, TX native will head to the West Coast and try his hand at Big Ten football under head coach Lincoln Riley. A consensus four-star prospect, Feaster was trending towards LSU following an official visit in March. He made the final official visit of his recruiting process to Baton Rouge on June 20 but the Trojans pulled ahead on the list. On3's Industry Rankings slot Feaster at No. 5 among wide receivers in the 2026 cycle and No. 45 overall. He reclassified from 2027 to 2026 earlier in February yet remained one of the most sought-after pass catchers in the country. The Tigers will be just fine without Feaster. LSU recruited well at wide receiver this cycle, picking up commitments from five-star Tristen Keys as well as four-stars Kenny Darby and Jabari Mack. The group ranks third in the SEC and sixth nationally.

2026 4-star WR commits to USC over Texas A&M
Texas A&M's 2026 wide receiver haul is headlined by four-stars Aaron Gregory, Madden Williams, and Mike Brown, who have all since shut down their recruitment and will sign with the program during the Early Signing Period on December 4. On Friday, coach Mike Elko and WR coach Holmon Wiggins were on the cusp of landing the program's fourth wide receiver commit, but were edged out by the current No. 1 recruiting class. 2026 four-star wide receiver Ethan "Boobie" Feaster committed to USC over Texas A&M, Alabama and LSU, which was not a shock given Rivals' prediction for the Trojans to land the stand out DeSoto (TX) product, who reclassified to the 2026 class late last year. Feaster is solid quarterback play away from becoming a five-star prospect, and for those wanting to blame Elko and Wiggins for losing out in the final days, USC has been on a hot streak similar to, and even more so than, the Aggies. Until Feaster signs his letter of intent, Texas A&M still has a shot at flipping him this fall. Still, right now, the Aggies are in excellent shape at the wide receiver position for the future, knowing that all three commits will be in College Station next summer, paired with nearly every receiver from the 2025 roster, outside of KC Concepcion. Feaster finished his junior season with a personal-best 57 receptions, 855 yards, and 14 touchdowns. Through two varsity seasons, the DeSoto product has 1,489 yards and 23 touchdowns. According to On3, Feaster is the 44th-ranked overall prospect and the fifth-ranked wide receiver in the 2026 class. He is the fifth-ranked prospect in Texas. USC football picks up crystal ball prediction for four-star wide receiver Boobie Feaster
Although USC football already holds the No. 1 recruiting in the country for the 2026 cycle, the Trojans are far from done yet. On Friday, four-star wide receiver Ethan "Boobie" Feaster is set to announce his commitment. Wednesday morning, Rivals recruiting analysts Sam Spiegelman and Steve Wiltfong both put in crystal ball projections for USC to land Feaster. Feaster was originally a member of the class of 2027, but reclassified to 2026. Per the On3 industry rankings, the DeSoto, Texas native is the No. 45 overall player and the No. 5 wide receiver in the class. It is easy to see why USC is an attractive option for Feaster. Head coach Lincoln Riley has a great history with producing star wide receivers, both at USC and during his time at Oklahoma. Landing Feaster would be yet another massive addition for the Trojans, who, led by Riley and new general manager Chad Bowden, are putting together, an elite 2026 class. Feaster is deciding between, USC, Texas A&M, LSU, and Alabama. He will announced his school choice on Friday at 10:00 a.m. Pacific time.
