Airline required to compensate families of Flight PS752 victims, Ontario court rules

Photo: Reuters / Social Media Ontario's highest court has upheld a ruling that found Ukraine International Airlines legally responsible to pay full compensation to families of victims who died in the downing of Flight PS752. On Jan. 8, 2020, the plane was shot down by two Iranian missiles just minutes after taking off from Tehran, killing all 176 people on board. Most of the passengers were bound for Canada, including 55 Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents, while many others had connections to Canada. Last year, an Ontario court found that Ukraine International Airlines was negligent because it failed to conduct a proper risk assessment for the flight out of Tehran. The court found that decision meant the airline could not limit the amount of compensation it provided to families. The Court of Appeal for Ontario dismissed the airline's appeal in a decision released Monday. Joe Fiorante, a lawyer representing some of the families in the case, called the ruling an important result for those who lost loved ones in the incident. The ruling of the Court of Appeal brings a small measure of justice for the families, Fiorante said in a news release. Should Canada come clean and admit it won't meet its climate goals? Carney condemns Israel's plan to take over Gaza City

Headlines Latest News Podcasts (new window) Home Politics Federal Politics PM says move will put hostages' lives at 'greater risk' Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada is one of 'many others' who view Israel's intention to take over Gaza City as wrong. Photo: The Canadian Press / Darryl Dyck Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday joined U.K. Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other world leaders in criticizing Israel's plan to take over Gaza City. We join many others in viewing that this is wrong, Carney told reporters at a news conference in Trenton, Ont., on Friday. Israel's security cabinet approved a plan earlier Friday to take control of the enclave's largest city, expanding military operations in the shattered Palestinian territory. The move has drawn intense criticism at home and abroad over its pursuit of the almost two-year-old war. This action will not contribute to an improvement in the humanitarian situation on the ground. It is going to put the lives of the hostages at greater risk rather than lessening it. He repeated Canada's call for an immediate ceasefire and for Hamas to return all of the hostages and their remains. We reiterate that Hamas has no role going forward, and we will continue to work with our allies to contribute what we can to achieving those outcomes, Carney said. Carney has said Canada intends to recognize the state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly next month, and that Hamas must have no role in governance. Rogan mocks Canada for reelecting Liberal Party, says ‘dumba–‘ Conservative candidate refused to come on show

Podcaster Joe Rogan on Tuesday marveled at how Canada reelected yet another liberal government after years of controversies. Canada's Liberal Party won the country's federal election for the fourth consecutive time on April 28. At one point, Pierre Poilievre appeared poised to become the next prime minister and lead his Conservatives to a majority government after Justin Trudeau announced his plans to step down. But in a turnaround sparked in part by President Donald Trump's threats of annexation and his tariffs on America's close ally and northern neighbor, Liberal Mark Carney won. Advertisement Rogan's guest, hunting podcaster Cameron Hanes, brought up Canada's infamous 2022 crackdown on the Freedom Convoy protest under Trudeau, when hundreds of truckers and sometimes thousands of protesters clogged the streets of downtown Ottawa by Parliament to protest vaccine mandates, coronavirus passports and other government restrictions. 'People who donated to them got their bank accounts frozen,' Rogan marveled as he recalled the 'insane' incident. 'And then that same party just won again. Good job, Canada!' 3 Rogan said that Poilievre would have had a better chance at winning if he appeared on his podcast. YouTube The host then claimed that Poilievre rejected his invitation to be a guest on the podcast. Advertisement 'I offered to have that Pierre guy come on the podcast. He didn't do it. Wouldn't do it. Thought it was too problematic. Or whatever,' Rogan claimed, adding that a source told him 'his advisers were telling him not to do it.' 'Like, hey, dumba–,' Rogan added with a grin. 3 Conservative party leader Pierre Poilievre speaks to supporters alongside his wife Anaida Poilievre after the election was declared for the Liberal Party in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada April 29, 2025. REUTERS Trump's lengthy appearance on Rogan's podcast was seen as a critical moment in the election, while then-Vice President Kamala Harris' potential interview falling through came to be seen as a strategic blunder. Advertisement Some observers have dubbed the 2024 presidential election the 'podcast election' because of how critical the role of podcasts were in lieu of legacy media. Hanes scoffed at people being concerned about coming on Rogan's podcast, arguing he does friendly interviews, 'You've never been the 'gotcha' guy.' 3 Conservative Party leader Pierre Poilievre's campaign office in the Carleton riding on election day during the 2025 Federal Elections, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada, 28 April 2025. What can be done to reverse some of these things that have been put into place?' Like, 'How did you feel about this? What would you have done differently?' Real simple stuff. I don't know anything about Canada's politics.' Advertisement 'It would have been fun,' Rogan said. Fox News Digital reached out to Poilievre's team and did not receive an immediate reply.
