NHRI Conducts Introductory Visit to Umm Al Quwain Police General Headquarters - Middle East Business News and Information
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, May, 2025: As part of its continued efforts to strengthen institutional partnerships and promote a culture of human rights across the United Arab Emirates, the National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) conducted an introductory visit to the Umm Al Quwain Police General Headquarters. His Excellency Major General Sheikh Rashid bin Ahmed Al Mualla, Commander-in-Chief of Umm Al Quwain Police, received the NHRI delegation, led by NHRI Chairperson Maqsoud Kruse. The delegation also included NHRI Board of Trustees members Dr. Ahmed Al Mansoori, and Dr. Abdul Aziz Al Noman; H.E. Dr. Saeed Al Ghfeli, NHRI Secretary-General; Amro Al Qahtani, Director of the Chairperson's Office; Abdulazeez Al Obthani, Head of International and Regional Organizations; Fatima Al Hosani, Head of the Awareness and Education Section; and Klaithem Al Kaabi from the Media Center. The visit aimed to advance cooperation and enhance coordination between the NHRI and the Umm Al Quwain Police in support of shared objectives related to justice, human dignity, and institutional development. During the meeting, the NHRI delegation presented the Institution's independent mandate and its responsibilities in monitoring, promoting, and protecting human rights. The discussion underscored the importance of partnering with police authorities to support national efforts and uphold values enshrined in UAE legislation and aligned with international human rights standards. H.E. Maqsoud Kruse noted that the visit aligns with the NHRI's strategic plan to expand engagement with key national institutions and raise awareness about its operational frameworks and collaborative approaches to safeguarding rights and freedoms across all sectors. The visit concluded with a field tour of facilities at the Umm Al Quwain Police General Headquarters, where the NHRI delegation was briefed on leading community service initiatives and the measures in place to uphold human rights within law enforcement practices. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: The National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) welcomed a delegation from the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) to its headquarters in Abu Dhabi, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen international cooperation and dialogue on the promotion and protection of human rights in the United Arab Emirates. The delegation, led by Mr. Mazen Shaqoura, Regional Representative of the OHCHR for the Middle East and North Africa, included Ms. Leen Eid, treaty bodies expert, and Mr. Jad Haj Shahada, Human Rights Assistant Officer. Upon their arrival, they were welcomed by His Excellency Maqsoud Kruse, Chairperson of the NHRI, and His Excellency Dr. Saeed Al Ghfeli, Secretary-General of the NHRI, along with a number of senior NHRI staff members. During the visit, the NHRI provided a comprehensive briefing on its latest initiatives, ongoing developments, and strategic future plans. Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates: The National Human Rights Institution (NHRI) held the eighth edition of its "Knowledge Lab" series, an internal platform aimed at educating and raising awareness among NHRI employees on key human rights issues. Titled 'Equal Rights and Respect for Differences among People of Determination,' the session was led by NHRI Board of Trustees Member Klaithem Al Matrooshi and focused on advancing the rights of People of Determination. It underscored the importance of creating inclusive, supportive environments that empower individuals to live with dignity, independence, and equal opportunity. A key theme of the discussion was the vital role that families, communities, and broader social systems play in enabling People of Determination to participate fully in society. Al Matrooshi emphasized that collaboration across these layers is essential to unlocking potential, fostering engagement, and promoting a culture of inclusion. Building on this, the seminar explored practical measures to advance inclusion by addressing various types of disabilities, including visual, auditory, and intellectual. Dh500,000 fine, 5-year jail: UAE authority warns against damaging nation's reputation online
The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department has called on the public not to make a mockery or damage the reputation of the country and its institutions online and warned of jail time and a hefty fine for people who do so. In an advisory posted on X on Tuesday, April 29, the UAE's capital's legal authority said that anyone who publishes information, news, data, visual images, visual materials, or rumours on a website or any information network or technological means with the intention of ridiculing or harming the reputation, prestige or status of the country, its authorities or institutions, will face imprisonment for a period not exceeding five years and a fine not exceeding Dh500,000. It is according to Article (25) of the Federal Law No. (34) of 2021 regarding combating rumours and cybercrimes. On April 12, Abu Dhabi Police had issued an advisory asking the public to Abu Dhabi
