Feindef 2025 sees record year: more than 44,000 attendees, 78% increase in international visitors

MADRID , May 28, 2025 /CNW/ -- The International Defense and Security Exhibition of Spain , Feindef, had a record year in 2025, with more than 44,000 attendees, an increase of 78% in international presence, and the signing of numerous strategic agreements, becoming a "benchmark platform for cooperation" for the sector for three days. With a strong international focus, the biennial fair, which has the institutional support of the Spanish Ministry of Defense, reinforced its global role. Feindef Foundation President Ángel Olivares said the focus was "essential" to guarantee "our security and defense" and that, at the same time, "opens a very hopeful path for the future." The fair, held from May 12 to 14 at Ifema Madrid, had 601 exhibitors (75% SMEs), of which 187 were international, and more than 90 delegations from different countries. There was "intense diplomatic and commercial activity with representatives from 56 nations," according to organizers. The European Defense Agency (EDA), Europol, the UN, NATO, the Organization for Joint Armament Cooperation (OCCAR), and the European Commission were among the organizations participating. During the three days, key issues in the sector were covered, such as unmanned systems, cyber defense, advances in artificial intelligence applied to military logistics, dual application technologies, and other major structural challenges, such as the importance of attracting and retaining talent and making young people more security aware. The fair served as an "ideal framework to facilitate agreements on international strategic alliances," said Olivares. The president also saw it as a space to continue advancing towards "a single defense market in Europe ." This is in a context, in which EU leaders have agreed to boost security and defense spending, which, according to Brussels , could result in a rise of up to 800 billion euros . The event also served as a platform for formalizing more than a dozen relevant agreements. Those include ones reached by Ukraine with both national and international companies, those made by TEDAE (Spanish Association of Technology Companies for Defense, Security, Aeronautics and Space) and AESMIDE (Association of Contractors with Public Administrations), letters of intent signed by the Spanish Ministry of Defense with the European Defense Agency (EDA), and a memorandum of understanding signed between Spanish industry and Turkish Aerospace for an integrated training program for the Spanish Air and Space Force.

TUSAŞ and Airbus team up on jet trainer pitch for Spanish Air Force

ISTANBUL — Turkish Aerospace Industries (TUSAŞ) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus and a group of 15 Spanish companies – 'Team Spain' – to explore cooperation on Spain's future jet trainer program. The agreement, signed during the Feindef defense exhibition in Madrid, focuses on developing a new Integrated Training System (ITS-C) that will eventually replace the Spanish Air Force's 19 F-5M training aircraft which have been in service for 53 years. The partnership aims to combine Airbus's experience in aircraft design, production and training with TUSAŞ's Hürjet. The Hürjet is a twin-seat, supersonic jet trainer designed to prepare pilots for advanced fighter aircraft and could become a key element in Spain's future training system. The agreement builds on a previous pact between TUSAŞ and Airbus and now includes Spanish industrial players. It also seeks to deepen defense ties between Turkey and Spain while contributing to the modernization of Spain's military pilot training infrastructure. Hürjet, currently in development by TUSAŞ, is designed to reach speeds of up to Mach 1.4. It includes advanced onboard and ground-based training systems and is scheduled to enter service with the Turkish Air Force in 2026. Lt. Gen. Miguel Ivorra Ruiz, who oversees defense-industry planning at the Spanish Ministry of Defense, emphasized the broader significance of the agreement. He described it as 'a step towards a solid, strategic and innovative industrial cooperation,' saying it would position Spanish companies at the center of an internationally scoped initiative.

Competitors for Spain's future 6x6 armored vehicle face off in Madrid

PARIS — Defense manufacturers eyeing a possible Spanish order for a new 6-wheeled armored vehicle flocked to Madrid this week for the biannual Feindef defense show, presenting new designs or agreeing to work together on armor for the country's land forces. Spain's Technology & Security Developments and Grupo Oesía, Turkey's FNSS Savunma Sistemleri and Belgium's John Cockerill Defense signed a memorandum of understanding to provide a six-wheeled cavalry vehicle for the Spanish Army, the companies said in a joint statement on Wednesday. TDS, Oesía, FNSS and John Cockerill said they aim to offer the Spanish Army an off-the-shelf solution, with local logistics support and life cycle management. Their offer is specifically designed for cavalry operations and providing fire support for expeditionary forces, the four firms said. Spain's Ejercito de Tierra operates the 6x6 BMR, a more than four decades-old 15-ton vehicle built by Santa Bárbara Sistemas, now part of General Dynamics European Land Systems, or GDELS. The army is replacing at least part of its wheeled fleet with the 8x8 Dragón, a heavier and more expensive vehicle that's faced delivery delays and which local media report has suffered mechanical issues. Indra acquired a majority stake in the consortium that makes the Dragón in October, buying shares from partners GDELS, SAPA and Escribano Mechanical and Engineering, or EM&E. Separately, Spain's EM&E presented the Ferox 6x6 armored vehicle at Feindef, after an agreement in February with NIMR Automotive, a unit of the United Arab Emirates' EDGE, to build six-wheeled armored vehicles in Spain. The agreement provides for transfer of knowledge and 'progressive national industrialization' of the vehicle, with design authority in Spain, EM&E said. 'This vehicle marks the beginning of a new stage for EM&E Group in the field of armored vehicles,' Chief Executive Fernando Fernández said. Meanwhile, Rheinmetall and Indra on Tuesday announced a memorandum of understanding to cooperate on armored-vehicle projects for the Spanish armed forces. With the MoU, the companies 'start a strong alliance to support the efforts of the Spanish Armed Forces to modernize their fleet of combat vehicles,' said Eduardo Veen Martinez, the CEO of Rheinmetall's tactical vehicles business unit. For its part, GDELS presented its Pandur 6x6 EVO armored vehicle at the defense show in Madrid, with the company saying its presence as Feindef reflects a 'firm commitment' to the Spanish armed forces and the government's defense industrial strategy. The company also unveiled a new tracked artillery system at the show called the Ascod Nemesis, consisting of a 155mm artillery gun module from KNDS mounted on an Ascod tracked chassis by GDELS.
