Marcos says he can sustain P20 per kilo rice

KUALA LUMPUR - ''Watch me sustain it.'' This was the bold statement made by President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. as regards his administration's P20 per kilo of rice. Speaking to Philippine reporters, Marcos said he was finally able to implement his campaign promise. He said he understands the sentiments of some of the public, saying that his project is only for optics. ''We'll talk in May of 2028, natuloy ba o hindi. We found a way. We found a way to do it. We found a way to do it. We could not do it before. Hindi kaya kasi hindi pa kaya ng sistema. Iba pa 'yung presyo ng bigas noon,'' he added. The President earlier explained why it took time for him to fulfill his campaign promise of P20 per kilo of rice, noting that the government needs to provide assistance first to the local farmers, including the provision of machinery. The Department of Agriculture (DA) initially implemented the sale of rice at P20 per kilo in the Visayas region. According to the DA, Marcos wants it to be implemented across the country in the long run. The second phase, which will commence in July, will be in the Mindanao region. The P20 per kilogram rice initiative under the Kadiwa ng Pangulo program only allows members of vulnerable sectors—including indigents, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and solo parents to buy NFA rice at P20 per kilogram. Rice sold in Kadiwa centers is subsidized by the government through the Food Terminal Inc. The DA is aiming to sustain the program until the end of Marcos' term in June 2028, potentially covering up to 15 million households, or approximately 60 million Filipinos. —LDF, GMA Integrated News

Marcos shrugs off decline in trust ratings: Let's not base it on one survey

''Madaming ibang survey. Let's not base it on one,'' Marcos said on his trust ratings, May 27, 2025. KUALA LUMPUR - President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Tuesday shrugged off the decline in his trust ratings, noting that it should not be based on one survey. ''Madaming ibang survey. Let's not base it on one,'' Marcos said in a briefing with the Philippine media delegation when asked how he plans to arrest the decline in his ratings. Marcos asked the media who conducted the survey and when the reporters responded that it was Pulse Asia, the President smiled. Marcos said the source of the survey should also be considered. ''Again, let's look at other surveys before we -- know your source. That's a – that's always an… Imperfect information makes you make imperfect decisions. The more perfect your information, the more perfect your decision will be. That is one source of information, and you have to understand where it's actually coming from,'' he stressed. Marcos' trust ratings stood at 32% while Vice President Sara Duterte was at 50%, the latest Pulse Asia's latest Pulse ng Bayan survey showed. According to the findings of the nationwide survey conducted from May 6 to 9 among 1,200 registered voters, former President Rodrigo Duterte had a trust rating of 63%. It indicated that those who trust the President increased in May to 32% by three percentage points from 29% in April. Those who distrust him decreased by three percentage points to 42% in May compared to 45% in April. —LDF, GMA Integrated News

(Photo from PCO) KUALA LUMPUR - President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. acknowledged the role of the Gulf Cooperation Council and China in the development of artificial intelligence. During the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit on Tuesday, Marcos said the GCC and China have become immersed "as global leaders in AI innovation." ''Let us also deepen cooperation in digital trade, cybersecurity and the development of digital skills so that our youth, entrepreneurs, and our workers are equipped to thrive in an AI-driven world,'' he added. It was Chinese Premier Li Qiang who attended the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit held at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. The member states of the GCC include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Marcos had vowed to push for an ethical and responsible AI during the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits. In 2023, Marcos underscored that the Philippines was ready for AI as he called on technology firms to partner with the Philippines in what he described as a "technological revolution." Marcos had said Manila is already embracing the AI revolution to augment the existing skills of Filipinos, increase the productivity of enterprises, and enhance the competitiveness of the economy.—LDF, GMA Integrated News

Marcos still mum on his next PNP chief

KUALA LUMPUR - President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. said Tuesday that he has already picked the next Philippine National Police (PNP) chief. Marcos, however, declined to disclose his choice but guaranteed that the government is clear on what to do next. Speaking to the Philippine media delegation during the 46th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits, Marcos said he wants to talk first to his choice before revealing it to the public. Current PNP chief Police General Rommel Marbil's extended term is set to expire on June 7. In February, Marcos extended the term of Marbil by four months, which was beyond the cop's compulsory retirement age of 56 amid the election season. —RF, GMA Integrated News

Marcos on calls for him to resign: Bakit ko gagawin 'yun?

KUALA LUMPUR - President Ferdinand ''Bongbong'' Marcos Jr. on Tuesday dismissed calls for him to resign after he asked for the courtesy resignations of his Cabinet members and heads of agencies. ''Bakit ko gagawin 'yun? Wala sa ugali ko ang tinatakbuhan ang problema,'' Marcos told the Philippine media delegation. He was responding to a query about his critics calling him to quit from his post after he sought the courtesy resignation of government officials. (Why should I do that? It's not my style to run away from problems.) Last week, Marcos said his call for Cabinet members to tender courtesy resignation aims to 'recalibrate' his administration following the midterm polls. The President did not accept the resignation of Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, who recently disclosed changes in the Cabinet posts. —RF, GMA Integrated News
