'Afroworld' exhibition explores black hair at Hull Ferens gallery

A celebration of black hair is to open at an art gallery in exhibition, called Hair: Identity in the Afroworld, features portraits by local photographer Rayh photo incorporates augmented reality in order to tell the story of the sitter and what their hair means to will open at the Ferens Art Gallery on Friday and is due to run until 17 August. Volunteers from across Hull have helped to create the exhibition by speaking about their experiences with their Fanfair, one of the organisers, said the show celebrated "the beauty and cultural significance of afro hair".Visitors can learn about braiding styles and hair-care techniques passed down through generations. Stephanie Edwards, a curator at the gallery, said it was "an exhibition for everyone, whether you have afro hair or not".The event would also "address the historic imbalance of representation within the Ferens' collection", she added. An exhibition that explored an artist's life as a disabled person has won an Wilsher-Mills' work, Are We there Yet?, won the Museum and Heritage Awards' Temporary or Touring Exhibition of the attracted more than 51,000 visitors when it was on display at Ferens Art Gallery in artist said he was "so proud and thrilled" to be recognised for his work, which took people on a journey of his personality, memory and disability through theatrical portraits and sculptures. He added: [The team at Ferens] showed their faith in me and I was able to repay this by creating new work, which the public in Hull truly engaged with."This was a group effort, which enabled me to work with and support disabled artists in Hull. I hope that I am able to work with my friends at Ferens in the future because we seem to bring the best out of each other."The exhibition, which was displayed from February and June 2024, has inspired Ferens to showcase more of the artist's work. His inflatable sculpture, The Withernsea 2, is now part of the gallery's permanent collection and is on display at the entrance. It was inspired by his childhood holidays in the seaside town and the Roos Carr figures - prehistoric figurines discovered near Withernsea in 1836 - in Hull Museums' collection. Hull Ferens gallery calls for artworks for open exhibition

Artists are being encouraged to submit their work for an annual open artwork will be put on show at the Ferens Art Gallery, Hull, from 10 October until 11 exhibition will celebrate the city's art scene and admissions are open to anyone aged 16 or to three pieces of work, created in the past 18 months, can be submitted from 23 April to 8 May. The final selection is due to be chosen by a panel of judges in June. The exhibition will offer artists a chance to sell their work, and a number of cash prizes will also be awarded. Artist's exhibition in Hull shortlisted for global award

An art exhibition at the Ferens Art Gallery in Hull has been shortlisted for a global exhibition entitled Are We There Yet had over 50,000 visitors at the gallery in 2024 and has been shortlisted for a Museum and Heritage pieces explored the experiences of Jason Wilsher-Mills as a disabled person through portrait work and artist said he was "incredibly proud" and grateful that the museum "believed" in his work. Mr Wilsher-Mills used computer tablets to create paintings which were then transformed into large, interactive said the show had been important for him: "This makes me incredibly proud and I would like to take the opportunity in thanking the team at Ferens for all of their care and support, which ultimately made the show such a success." Following the exhibition, the gallery commissioned the artist to make a sculpture for their permanent collection. The Withernsea 2 is a huge inflatable sculpture and is situated near the entrance.
