'So much of my work never made it out there': Ferlyn Wong unveils 2014 SKarf footage, Entertainment News

Even if this quintet disbanded 11 years ago, fans still fondly remember its 13th debut anniversary yesterday (Aug 14). To commemorate the occasion, local actress Ferlyn Wong took to Instagram to share previously unreleased practice footage of K-pop girl group SKarf, which she was part of from 2012 to 2014. In the video, the five members perform a song cover of Wings by British girl group Little Mix. The 33-year-old wrote in her Reel's caption: "Thirteen years ago, the world met SKarf. Singapore saw its first homegrown talents step into the K-pop spotlight. "We grew up quickly, learning to navigate change and survival at a young age... What we went through wasn't just a journey; it was a quiet fight to keep going. "Today, we've all taken flight in different directions. We're not always in touch, but when we do reconnect, it's as if no time has passed. I'm proud of us. Talent? Plenty. Luck? Not so much. Passion? We were on fire!" SKarf debuted in Seoul in August 2012, with their song Oh! Dance. Its original line-up consisted of leader Tasha and Ferlyn from Singapore, Sol who is Korean-American and Jenny from South Korea. After Sol's departure in December 2012, Korean member JooA and Japanese member Hana joined the group. A day leading up to yesterday's release of the footage, Ferlyn dropped hints when she posted Instagram Stories of herself dancing to K-pop choreographies, reminiscing: "Back then I ate, slept and breathed dance. Everyone just got used to it. "The only thing that makes me sad is knowing so much of my work never made it out there. Those were the days before social media. Will be releasing something special tomorrow." Ferlyn told AsiaOne that she had decided to post the song cover after 11 years as she has "grown deeply proud" of everything that has been achieved under SKarf's name. "What touches me even more is knowing that so many SKarf fans have stayed by our side all this time, supporting us, cheering for us and looking out for us. Their love has never gone unnoticed. "It's also a chance for me to share our story with new fans who have come to know me through (local dramas) Emerald Hill and The Spirit Hunter. Whether they've been here since day one or only just joined me on this journey, they're part of this chapter and I'm so grateful for them." She also shared that she recently had a video call with JooA and Tasha. The latter is now an actress, going by Tasha Low, and both Singaporeans recently acted together in the drama Emerald Hill: The Little Nyonya Story. "It reminded me how special our connection is. We can go months without talking, but when we do, it feels like no time has passed at all. There's a level of trust and comfort between us that's so warm," she expressed. "Everyone is doing well. Thank you for the concern." Despite the group's disbandment in 2014, many SKarf fans and Singaporeans showed their adoration for the group in the Reel's comments section. One said: "So much love for SKarf! Proud to be a fan from the start, all of you worked hard and did well! Keep shining, fighting!" "I still sing Oh! Dance and Luv Virus in the norebang (Korean for karaoke)!" said another fan. "My favourite song with my favourite group?! I'm so sad this cover never got to be performed, but nonetheless, thank you so much Ferlyn for showing us this precious video!" wrote a fan. Acknowledging the heartfelt comments, Ferlyn said: "I'm always so grateful for all of our SKarf fans. The journey hasn't always been easy, but they've made it meaningful and full of purpose. Just as they feel I've touched their lives, I want them to know that they've touched mine too. "I can't wait to make more memories together. For those who've been with me since my SKarf days, it's so special to see you grow, achieve and make your mark in the world. I'm grateful to you for being part of this journey with me." 'It was a brand new world': Ferlyn Wong recounts first foray into stunts and fight scenes in new fantasy drama , Entertainment News

Local actress Ferlyn Wong jumped into new territory with The Spirit Hunter, a local fantasy drama series that required her to be suspended in mid-air, fight with swords and use martial arts. In a recent interview with AsiaOne, the 33-year-old shared her experience preparing for her role as Hua Cheng Feng, a swordswoman with a life purpose — to give back to her god-uncle after he saved her life. Ferlyn said: "It was a brand new world for me, learning how to handle a sword and look cool doing it. Training gave me a space to focus, to make the sword feel like an extension of myself. It is definitely not as easy as it looks." The drama also stars Hong Ling as Tian Nana, a 20-year-old girl burdened to carry a toy sword infused with the spirit of Jian Ling (Richie Koh), which curses her to see supernatural entities that she must defeat. She told us she spent two months undergoing stunt training in Singapore two to three times a week, while also filming Emerald Hill — The Little Nyonya Story in Johor. Initially, she thought juggling both characters would be difficult since her roles in Emerald Hill and The Spirit Hunter were "vastly different". In the former, she plays Zhou Hongyu, who works in a brothel until she discovers she was born Anya, a member of the wealthy Zhang family. However, once it became her routine, she realised training for two hours after shooting the drama became a "therapy session" for her. She elaborated: "It actually became an avenue for me to escape the environment and mental state of my character in Emerald Hill. It gave me the space to recalibrate and return to the Emerald Hill set with a clearer, healthier mindset." 'Strangle me, just strangle' Once she began filming The Spirit Hunter, Ferlyn sustained a fair share of bruises but they became her badge of honour: "Since I'm usually fighting against men, I often end up with bruises. They hurt for days, but secretly, I'm proud of them, especially when the fight scenes turn out really well." Many of her action scenes were with Tyler Ten, who plays Zhou Jie. She told us she was "quite relieved" she would be acting opposite the 29-year-old, as they have worked together on two other dramas, Emerald Hill and I Do, Do I?. "(We have) an unspoken relationship because we grew up together. So when I knew it was with Tyler, I knew that our chemistry was going to be there." Ferlyn added that in one particular scene by the poolside, she gave Tyler "permission to go full force". "We had already built a strong level of trust, and we knew our fight choreography would sync perfectly. Of course, I ended up with the most bruises after that scene. Hitting him is like hitting a huge rock." In another scene, Tyler had to act like he was choking Ferlyn. She didn't want it to look like he was withholding his strength so she told him to "just go for it, strangle me, just strangle". Due to his strength, Ferlyn did have to remind him to let go while they were doing the scene. Although a dance background from her time in the now disbanded K-pop group Skarf helped her memorise the choreography and execute the moves, fight choreography requires a little more control, she said. "You have to exert the force, but right before you reach them, you have to stop a little bit, just so the impact is not as big as the real move," she explained. [[nid:719279]] Ferlyn's first fight scene was with supporting actor Mark Valentino, and it got off to an intense start. "In my first few fighting scenes, I literally punched him in the face, but we just continued the scene," she recalled. When the director yelled "cut", Ferlyn asked Mark if he was okay and thanked him for not stopping the scene. To her surprise, he replied: "No, thank you for continuing." Wired scenes Ferlyn was suspended in the air for some of her action scenes, assisted by a professional team from Hong Kong. "There weren't any moments when I felt scared or unsure. I believe that in every action scene, trust is crucial. Trust between the stunt team, your scene partner, the crew, and yourself," she told us. "Once that level of trust is established, you know everyone is looking out for each other's safety. That's why I never had any doubts and I would usually just go for it." Ferlyn said she had no problems doing wired scenes alone. However, when it came to doing them with other actors, like Elvin Ng, she admitted there were some difficulties. "There were times when his speed was faster than mine because of the weight difference, and it took a few more takes to get the perfect take. But he's very professional," she said, adding that he would often tweak his movements and acting after checking the result. "So that's why I said the cast is very important. When I saw the cast list, I was very confident that we won't waste time. All very intelligent actors and actresses." The Spirit Hunter is available on demand for free on Mewatch. It will also premiere on Channel 8 on July 3, airing weekdays at 9pm. [[nid:719451]] No part of this article can be reproduced without permission from AsiaOne.

Ferlyn Wong had emergency eye surgery after incident on set of new drama, Entertainment News

Local actress Ferlyn Wong had a health scare when she woke up one morning in early December last year and couldn't open her eyes. Visiting the hospital a second time for the same ailment, she had expected the doctor to give her stronger medicine. Instead, she was shocked to hear that she needed emergency surgery immediately. While promoting her new drama The Spirit Hunter, the 33-year-old told AsiaOne in a recent interview that around two and a half weeks earlier, she was filming in a "rough and sandy" environment. Despite this, Ferlyn was determined to do most of her character Hua Cheng Feng's fights and stunts herself. "We were actually attached to a stunt double for every single scene," she said. "But I set a very high expectation for myself and I wanted to do most of the scenes." She added she performed 80 per cent of her scenes herself. The production team used strong wind effects, sending sand into the air and into the puddles left behind by the morning's rain. After filming the scene, Ferlyn fell into a puddle of muddy water, where a lot of sand went into her eyes. "The next day I felt something was off with my eye," she shared. "I thought in just one or two days, it would be fine, you know?" As the day went by, Ferlyn felt "weirder" so she saw a doctor and was prescribed medicine. However, her condition worsened and she ended up battling a severe eye infection that required surgery. She told us that her manager and parents were overseas at that time, and so she had to leave the hospital by herself. Although filming was delayed for four days because of her condition, the production staff put the actors' safety and health first, she said. Ferlyn has since recovered with no impact to her vision, but shared that she developed a double eyelid on her right eye after the surgery. In The Spirit Hunter, she plays Hua Cheng Feng, a swordswoman with a life purpose — to give back to her god-uncle after he saved her life. Hong Ling plays protagonist Tian Nana, a 20-year-old girl burdened to carry a toy sword infused with the spirit of Jian Ling (Richie Koh), which curses her to see supernatural entities that she must defeat. Ferlyn shared that the script was inspired by the concept of yin and yang, where there's darkness within the light and light within the darkness. "Who says good won't do evil? Who says bad won't do good?" she said. "People would think that Hua Cheng Feng is evil, but there's always a reason to why she's doing what she's doing." The Spirit Hunter, which also stars Tyler Ten, will be available on demand for free on Mewatch from June 30 and premieres on July 3, airing on weekdays at 9pm on Channel 8.
