According to a TOI report, he has now been made to pay nearly Rs 1 crore in pending taxes after a transport department department recovered Rs 61.9 lakh in tax for his Ferrari 812 Superfast, which was registered in Jharkhand, and Rs 37 lakh for his Mercedes-Benz, which was registered in Puducherry. Officials found that both cars were regularly being used in Karnataka, even though they were registered elsewhere.'He lives and works in Bengaluru. The Ferrari, which costs about Rs 5 crore, was registered in Jharkhand with just Rs 14 lakh paid as tax. Bengaluru: A city-based businessman, who allegedly registered his high-end Ferrari and Mercedes-Benz outside Karnataka to evade the state's steep lifetime taxes, has been made to pay nearly Rs 1 crore in dues after a transport department inquiry. The department recovered Rs 61.9 lakh for the Ferrari 812 Superfast, which was registered in Jharkhand, and Rs 37 lakh for the Mercedes-Benz, registered in Puducherry. Officials said both vehicles were in regular use within the state, despite being registered elsewhere. "He is a resident of Bengaluru and operates his business from here. Both high-end cars were registered outside Karnataka to avoid the higher tax slabs applicable within the state. For instance, on the Rs 5-crore Ferrari, which he bought 4-5 years ago, he paid just Rs 14 lakh in Jharkhand. Had he registered it in Karnataka, he would have been liable to pay nearly Rs 1 crore in tax," a senior transport department official said. "He failed to comply," the official added. The department issued a notice to the businessman in March this year, seeking recovery of unpaid dues. He initially claimed the Ferrari had only been brought to Bengaluru for servicing in Jan and would be returned to Jharkhand within three months. "Meanwhile, we gathered evidence showing both cars were being regularly used in Karnataka for over a year. On Friday, we confronted him with the details and warned of legal action for misleading the department," the official said. The businessman subsequently agreed to settle the matter and issued cheques to cover the outstanding taxes. This is the second such high-profile recovery by the department in recent days. Earlier this week, it collected Rs 40 lakh in tax dues from a businessman who had purchased used Rolls-Royce cars previously owned by Bollywood actors Amitabh Bachchan and Aamir Khan. The cars, originally registered in Maharashtra, were being operated in Karnataka for years without payment of local taxes.

Bengaluru: Transport authorities on Friday penalised the owners of two more luxury cars that were registered outside Karnataka but regularly used within the state without paying applicable road tax. .A Jayanagar RTO team collected nearly Rs 1 crore in fines and unpaid road tax from the car owners. .The cars include a Ferrari 812 Superfast registered in Jharkhand (JH 10 BS0099) and a Mercedes-Benz G-Class AMG G 63 registered in Puducherry (PY 05 K 6309). .The Ferrari owner had to fork out Rs 61,94,494 and the Merc owner Rs 37,03,644. .The two cars were being regularly used in Karnataka for more than two years, a Transport Department official told said. .Bengaluru bizman fined Rs 38 lakh for unpaid road tax on luxury cars bought from Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir on Wednesday, transport authorities fined scrap dealer-turned-real-estate businessman Yousuf Shariff, popularly known as KGF Babu, nearly Rs 40 lakh for using two Maharashtra-regitered Rolls-Royce cars in Bengaluru without paying the required road tax. .One of the cars (MH 02-BB-0002) was bought from Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan, and the other (MH11-AX-0001) from actor Aamir Khan. .As per transport department rules, any vehicle registered outside Karnataka and used continuously in the state for over a year must pay the applicable road tax.

Contractors building Alligator Alcatraz have donated money to Florida GOP, DeSantis
Among at least 10 state contractors involved in the creation of Alligator Alcatraz, the facility in the middle of the Everglades the state has built for immigrant detainees, three have given money to Gov. Ron DeSantis or the Republican Party of Florida for statewide campaigns. One contractor stands out: CDR Maguire and its affiliated company, CDR Health. The companies and their married chief executives, Carlos Duart and Tina Vidal-Duart, have given a total of $1.9 million to the two state political action committees supporting DeSantis' bids for governor and to the Republican Party of Florida, according to Florida campaign finance records. Duart and Vidal-Duart are close allies of DeSantis and have come up repeatedly in recent reporting by the Herald/Times. Duart, a DeSantis-appointed FIU trustee, was mentioned in an article relating to the Governor's Inn, an exclusive hotel developed by a different donor that is closed to the public. Reporters saw him going in and out of the Inn on May 6 before driving off in his black Ferrari 812 Superfast — worth up to $400,000 new. Vidal-Duart serves on the board of the embattled Hope Florida Foundation charity that is spearheaded by state First Lady Casey DeSantis and that is central to a criminal investigation by the State Attorney's Office in Leon County over a $10 million transfer that came from a Medicaid settlement last year. CDR Maguire is a national emergency-management company based in Miami. It has seven affiliated companies, according to its website, that span from health care to financial services to bridge construction, all of which could be useful in developing temporary shelters such as the migrant detention center being built in the Everglades. CDR Health is among them. According to the company's website, employees at CDR Health's Miami office have treated more than 140,000 refugees, including Cuban and Haitian asylum applicants. Neither Duart nor Vidal-Duart returned a call from the Herald/Times on Wednesday. Two sources familiar with the construction of the Everglades site confirmed to the Herald/Times that the companies are working on site preparation and engineering, as well as staffing a medical facility. The detention camp is intended to house up to 3,000 immigrants before they are deported. It opened on Tuesday with a red-carpet-like rollout for political celebrities including President Donald Trump, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and DeSantis. Founder Matt Michelsen gave $25,000 to the Republican Party of Florida in 2021 and $25,000 to DeSantis' Empower Parents political action committee in 2022. Gothams will provide technology services, according to the sources. A representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Wednesday evening. Gothams, which is based in Texas, has made millions constructing a holding facility in the Lone Star state, according to the nonprofit news organization Texas Observer. Billions awarded before While CDR Maguire's owners are the biggest donors to DeSantis and the state Republican party, their two companies haven't received the most money in state contracts compared to one of the other Alligator Alcatraz vendors. That prize goes to Texas-based Garner Environmental Services. The DeSantis administration is being sued by environmental groups given the remote construction site is in the ecologically unique Everglades. Garner has been awarded up to $1.6 billion for past state work, according to the Florida contracting system. Garner has worked with Florida for hurricane preparation and recovery. The firm will help build the detention center and assist with ongoing maintenance, according to the sources. A representative from the company could not be reached for comment on Wednesday evening. CDR Maguire and CDR Health have been awarded up to a $1 billion combined for past state contracting work. Gothams LLC has been awarded up to $310.5 million. GardaWorld has been awarded up to nearly $8 million. SLS-WSP, like Garner, is helping build out the detention facility. LTS, like CDR Maguire, is involved in site preparation and engineering. Doodie Calls, aptly named, will provide facility sanitation. Granny's Alliance will feed detained migrants. Deployed Resources will provide janitorial services, according to the sources. Deployed Resources also has a $3.8 billion dollar contract with the federal government to operate a migrant detention camp in Texas, according to the Texas Tribune, and has focused on tent complexes.
