Crowd will be behind retiring Dustin Poirier vs. Max Holloway at UFC 318
UFC 318 will culminate with the trilogy fight between Max Holloway and the retiring Dustin Poirier for Holloway's 'BMF' title on Saturday in New Orleans. Holloway (26-8 MMA) and Poirier (30-9, 1 NC) previously fought in 2012 and 2019, with Poirier winning both fights. The most recent meeting saw Poirier win a unanimous decision for the UFC interim lightweight championship in one of the promotion's most talked-about fights. Shifting to the trilogy fight, it's Poirier's final UFC fight, and the Smoothie King Center will play host to the festivities. It is Poirier's first fight in his home state in a decade, which means a great deal to the 36-year-old. 'If you chase your dreams, anything is possible,' Poirier said. Poirier confirmed rapper and New Orleans icon Lil Wayne will be part of his entrance for the fight, revealing that with a win, he wants Wayne to be part of the belt presentation ceremony. Holloway, despite being from Hawaii, wants the same treatment. Holloway showed mutual respect toward his rival but said he is embracing the role of fighting in enemy territory. 'It's gonna be a fun one, man,' Holloway said. 'It's gonna be a fun one. It's his last dance ... Bring out more of the boos, please. That's what I like to hear.' Holloway has held the symbolic 'BMF' title since UFC 300, when he knocked out Justin Gaethje. Neither fighter offered an exact prediction for the fight, but did say that they hope to put on one of the best fights in recent memory, similar to their April 2019 encounter. Nevertheless, Holloway-Poirier 3 tops a 14-fight card with main card festivities getting underway on ESPN+ pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. Steve Allan posts wire-to-wire win at Dick's Open
Steve Allan's second victory of the Champions season was of the wire-to-wire fashion. Allan shot a 6-under 66 on Sunday to finish in style as he recorded a four-stroke victory over Jason Caron in the Dick's Open at Endicott, N.Y. Allan, 51, shot 18-under 198 in his three trips around En-Joie Golf Club. He opened with a scorching 63 on Friday and followed with a 69 before protecting his lead on Sunday. 'It's weird, not one of those things I ever thought that I would do,' Allan said of leading after each round. 'Over the years I would get ahead of myself but I guess I'm improving at it. It was tough, it was tough even (Saturday) hanging in there.' Allan's first career Champions title was in March at the Galleri Classic by one shot over Tag Ridings. This time, Allan won comfortably over Caron (68 on Sunday). Notah Begay III (67) and Boo Weekley (70) tied for third place, finishing five shots back at 13 under. Allan recorded seven birdies, including a stretch of five in six holes between Nos. 8-13. His lone bogey came on No. 6. 'I think my putting really was great today,' Allan said. 'That was the real difference maker because I hit the ball OK but the putts I holed are good solid putts on 11, 12 and 13. I mean, you could have easily missed all of those and you're three shots worse and I'm tied for the lead and it's a real battle, so that was huge.' Caron had five birdies but his lone bogey of the round was costly. It came on the par-3, 17th and ended any chance of being the benefactor if Allan had stumbled late. But Caron was pleased with a tourney in which he shot 68 or lower in each round. 'I played really solid today,' Caron said. 'I putted the ball awesome all week, speed was like very, very good, and made some good putts. I didn't drive it exceptionally well but my irons were pretty decent, too, so I can't complain there. I think mentally I played solid all week.' Begay made five birdies on the front nine. But he was unable to make a move on the back side as he posted nine straight pars. Weekley was one shot back entering the day and birdied two of the first three holes. He bogeyed No. 7, but recovered by recording birdies on each of the next two holes. But after a birdie on No. 12, he bogeyed 13 and 15 to fall out of contention. Jeff Sluman (68), Australia's Michael Wright (67) and Denmark's Soren Kjeldsen (64) tied for fifth at 12-under. Three-time defending champion Padraig Harrington of Ireland wasn't on the grounds this week. He instead played at the Scottish Open. Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Shane Lowry hoping for more Open magic at Royal Portrush
Missing the cut at the past two majors hasn't dimmed Shane Lowry's confidence as the Irishman returns to the scene of his greatest triumph this week. Lowry followed up a T42 at the Masters with early exits at the PGA Championship at Quail Hollow and the U.S. Open at Oakmont. He won his lone major at The Open Championship at Royal Portrush -- site of this week's championship -- in Northern Ireland in 2019, finishing 15-under to defeat Englishman Tommy Fleetwood by a whopping six strokes. 'I kind of pride myself on not missing cuts, especially in the big events. I feel like I can always get myself there or thereabouts in the big events and I have done over the last number of years,' Lowry said Monday at Royal Portrush. 'But I've been consistently quite good this year. I've given myself a couple of chances to win, which I'm very disappointed that I didn't, but we've got a few months left to kind of redeem myself and get a win on the board.' Lowry, 38, who skipped last week's Genesis Scottish Open, is ranked No. 18 in the world and has four top-10 finishes on the PGA Tour this season. He tied for second at the Truist Championship in May and was second at Pebble Beach in February. 'No matter how well you're playing the season, if you don't have a win beside your name at least once, you don't really class it as being very good,' Lowry said. 'Yeah, but my season has been going -- I've got a good FedExCup ranking (17th) at the minute and things have been going all right.' Lowry said he'd 'spent the last six years' trying to figure out why everything came together for him at Royal Portrush in 2019. 'I'd been playing pretty solid, like really good golf the whole year,' he said. 'Then I came to a place that I knew and I loved, and it just all clicked. I was playing some of the best golf of my life.' At last year's Open at Royal Troon, Lowry held the lead entering Saturday's round and finished sixth. Despite the disappointing results at the last two majors, Lowry said he feels like he is a better golfer now than he was six years ago. 'But it doesn't mean I'm going to go out and win by seven this year instead of six. It's just golf; that's the way it is,' he said. 'I think, as a golfer, you always have to look at it as the glass is always half full. You can't look at it any other way. If you look at it any other way, you're going to be in trouble. So I try and look at it that way all the time.' Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved

Jannik Sinner limits practice session, awaits MRI on elbow
Jannik Sinner participated in a limited training session on Tuesday, one day in advance of his Wimbledon quarterfinal match vs. 10th-seeded American Ben Shelton. Earlier reports said that Sinner had canceled the session, awaiting an MRI results on his right elbow. The All England Club confirmed that Sinner's 4 p.m. indoor session at Wimbledon's Aorangi Park had been scrubbed, but the top-ranked Italian's coach Darren Cahill told ESPN that his pupil did hit some balls. 'We did go out to the indoor courts and just fed balls (to him) for 20-30 minutes, just to feel the ball,' Cahill said. 'He's going to be OK, it was just nice to get on the court -- it's impossible for him to take a day off.' Sinner sustained the injury during an early fall in Monday's fourth-round win against 19th-seeded Grigor Dimitrov. Sinner, 23, dropped the first two sets in that match before Dimitrov retired due to his own injury at 2-2 in the third set. A three-time Grand Slam winner, Sinner's best showing at the grass-court major was a semifinal effort in 2023. The match will take place on Court 1, after the ladies' quarterfinal match between Iga Swiatek and Liudmila Samsonova, which gets underway at 1 p.m. local time. Taylor Fritz reaches first semifinal at Wimbledon
No. 5 Taylor Fritz advanced to the semifinals of Wimbledon for the first time by defeating No. 17 Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6(4) on Tuesday in London. Fritz twice had lost in the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, dropping five-setters to Rafael Nadal in 2022 and Lorenzo Musetti in 2024. The 27-year-old has 10 ATP Tour titles but has yet to win a major. In Friday's semis, Fritz will meet No. 2 seed Carlos Alcaraz after the Spaniard recorded a 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Brit Cameron Norrie. Afterward, Fritz said it was a relief to get past his Russian opponent in the two-hour, 36-minute match. 'It's an amazing feeling,' the native Californian said in his on-court interview. 'Obviously having played the quarterfinals here twice and lost in five (sets) twice, I don't think I could have taken another one. So I'm really happy I'm going to get to play the semis here.' Fritz had 16 aces among his 47 winners to go with 31 unforced errors. Nerves seemed to strike in the third set, when Khachanov broke Fritz's serve twice and ran up 29 total points, compared to 15 for Fritz. 'I'm feeling great to get through it,' said Fritz. 'I feel like the match was going so well for me for two sets. I've never had a match really just flip so quickly, so I'm really happy with how I came back in the fourth set and got it done. I think the momentum was definitely not going to have been on my side going into a fifth.' Fritz will be playing in his second semifinal at a major. At the 2024 U.S. Open, he defeated fellow American Frances Tiafoe in a five-set semi, then dropped the final to Italian No. 1 Jannik Sinner in straight sets. Two-time defending champion Alcaraz ripped 13 aces while sweeping his way past Norrie. He had a 39-13 edge in winners and saved all five break points he faced. 'I'm just really happy to be able to play another semifinal here at Wimbledon,' Alcaraz said afterward. 'It's something really special and something that I wanted to do at the beginning of the week. I'm really happy with the level that I played today against a difficult player like Cam. I'm pretty sure that there is nobody working harder than him, so I'm happy to see him playing these kinds of matches.' Alcaraz's career-best winning streak now stands at 23 matches. He also stands 23-2 with two titles in five Wimbledon appearances. Alcaraz is 2-0 all-time against Fritz but he's expecting a big-time fight on Friday. 'He's playing great,' Alcaraz said of Fritz. 'He's been really successful: Two titles, semifinals here at Wimbledon. ... I'm just going to be ready for that battle. It's always tough to play against him. I will just focus, but right now I want to enjoy and live this moment because it's really not easy to play the semifinals here.' Field Level Media 2025 - All Rights Reserved
