Fill the Bus Campaign raises money for local food bank

JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Wegmans is stepping up to combat summertime hunger among students, ensuring they have access to nutritious meals when school is out. Wegmans is partnering with the Food Bank of the Southern Tier for its annual Fill the Bus Campaign. From now until June 18, Wegmans customers are invited to donate between $2 and $5 at the register when making their purchases. These donations help fund food baskets for students and families who miss out on school meals during the summer. Wegmans' Merchandizing Area Manager Rusty Dewing says that the organization is thrilled to be able to lend a helping hand. 'I've seen bags delivered to families that need them, and it's very touching and humbling to see that happen, and it actually just brings so much joy to know that people are getting some of the things that they may need,' said Dewing. Outside of the store, a parked school bus serves as a symbol, promoting the cause and inspiring shoppers to donate. For over 45 years, Wegmans has donated 36.6 million pounds of food to Food Banks in the areas that it serves.
