Vidya Balan Reveals Vidhu Vinod Chopra Asked Her To Get A Nose Job For Parineeta: 'Get Surgery Done'
Vidhu Vinod Chopra told Vidya Balan that her nose was too long. Vidya Balan made a powerful entry into Bollywood with Parineeta (2005), a film adaptation of Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's classic Bengali novel. Directed by Pradeep Sarkar and produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra, Parineeta showcased Vidya not just as a newcomer, but as an actress of depth and grace, capable of carrying a film with subtle intensity. However, Vidya recently revealed to Filmfare that Vidhu asked her to get a nose job done for the film. 'Vidhu Vinod Chopra said, 'Your nose is too long, let's get a surgery done.' I refused. I've never had anything done to my face — just the odd facial. I've always believed in keeping my face the way God made it," Vidya stated. 'Parineeta was a massive success. Top directors started calling. But at photoshoots, they'd say, 'Let's try something new with you,' and I'd think, 'What have you even seen of me to want something new?' They'd say, 'Let's make you look younger and sexy.' I was open to experimenting, but after a while, it got frustrating," she added. Set in 1960s Kolkata, Parineeta tells the story of Lalita (played by Vidya), an orphan raised by her uncle, and her complex relationship with her childhood friend Shekhar (Saif Ali Khan). The film explores themes of love, pride, and societal boundaries, capturing the essence of old-world romance and class conflict. Lalita is a quiet but strong-willed woman whose emotional resilience and unwavering dignity become the heart of the story. What stood out was Vidya Balan's nuanced performance. She brought warmth, restraint, and emotional honesty to the role. Her chemistry with Saif Ali Khan was both tender and intense, anchoring the emotional weight of the film. Her ability to convey strength through silence and grace marked her as a refreshing departure from the typical debutante. Critics and audiences alike lauded her performance, earning her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and establishing her as a serious actor in the industry. Parineeta also won praise for its lush cinematography, soulful music by Shantanu Moitra, and the lyrical storytelling that echoed the elegance of Hindi cinema's golden era. Today, Parineeta is remembered as more than just a debut film—it is the beginning of Vidya Balan's journey as one of India's most respected actresses, known for choosing meaningful roles and redefining the portrayal of women in Indian cinema. He didn't rely on a towering legacy alone; he earned his stripes with nuanced roles, linguistic versatility, and a magnetic screen presence. Be it a poetic, romantic, or a layered anti-hero, he becomes the character and shines on the big screen, whose shine will never fade away because he is not just an artist, but a blend of art and masterful craft. Who is this actor This remarkable actor is none other than Dulquer Salmaan, the son of legendary Malayalam icon Mammootty, who is currently celebrating his 43rd birthday. Born in 1986, in Kochi, he spent his early years studying in Chennai and then earned a business degree from Purdue University in the USA. After a stint in the IT business in Dubai, feeling uninspired, he enrolled in a three‑month acting course at Barry John Acting Studio in Mumbai and embraced cinema as his sacred profession. How did Dulquer Salmaan establish himself as an artist? Dulquer debuted with the gritty Malayalam crime drama Second Show (2012), playing a gangster, a role he chose deliberately to earn respect as a hero rather than rely on legacy. But it was Ustad Hotel later that same year where he played a chef named Faizy, garnering wide acclaim and a Filmfare Award for Best Male Debut alongside his first Best Actor nomination. He later appeared in O Kadhal Kanmani, Kurup, and debuted in Bollywood with Karwaan alongside Late Irrfan Khan and Mithila Palkar, The Zoya Factor with Sonam Kapoor Ahuja and critically acclaimed Chup with Shreya Dhanwanthary and Sunny Deol. Later, Dulquer reached new heights with the Telugu hits Sita Ramam and Lucky Baskhar, a smart black‑comedy crime drama, helmed by Venky Atluri. Made on a Rs 100 crore budget, the film grossed Rs 111.9 crore and made him the first Malayalam actor to win the Telangana State Film Award (Special Jury) for Best Actor. More about Dulquer Salmaan Beyond acting, he leads Wayfarer Films, his own production banner, steering Malayalam cinema toward new horizons. His upcoming slate includes Lokah – Chapter One: Chandra, a pioneering female‑led superhero film and the first 'superhero cinematic universe' in Malayalam, now in post‑production. 'Mujhe Daant Padi': Amitabh Bachchan Scolded Rajiv Rai For Making Kajol The Killer In Gupt
Director Rajiv Rai recalls Amitabh Bachchan scolding him for making Kajol the killer in Gupt. Director Rajiv Rai's 1997 thriller Gupt left a generation stunned with its shocking twist — Kajol, the film's beloved heroine, was revealed to be the murderer. The bold move to cast a female lead as the villain was considered groundbreaking in Hindi cinema at the time. But not everyone was on board with this twist — including none other than Amitabh Bachchan, who personally questioned Rai's decision ahead of the film's release. In a recent interview on the Ravi Buleiy Official YouTube channel, Rajiv Rai shared a fascinating anecdote about a trial screening of Gupt held in Chennai. Amitabh Bachchan had attended the show and called Rai the very next day. 'He said, 'Rajiv, are you convinced with what you have done in this film? You have made Kajol the killer, are you sure? How can you be so sure?' So in one way, as a senior, he scolded me," Rai said. 'Mere ko daant padi. He is a senior, he can obviously scold me." Rajiv went on to explain that despite Bachchan's doubts, he stood firm in his creative vision, 'He questioned me, 'How are you so confident that this will work?' I told him, 'Sir, I don't have an answer for your questions. It is Wednesday already, please wait for 2 days, you will get your answer.'" As history would have it, Gupt opened to critical and commercial success, and Kajol's performance earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Villain, becoming the first actress to win in that category. Rajiv Rai also recalled his early professional ties to Amitabh Bachchan, having worked as an assistant director on classic films like Trishul and Kaala Patthar, both of which starred the megastar. He revealed that during a challenging phase in Bachchan's career — between 1992 and 1994 — he developed a script with Anees Bazmee specifically for the legendary actor. Despite Rai's high hopes, Bachchan declined the project, 'He said that the phase that I am going through right now, I don't want to do any films. He was not going through a good phase then," Rai said. 'He was confused, and in that confusion, he said no. He is not a confused man but his circumstances were such." The rejection left Rai heartbroken, 'I was like, 'I worked so hard, I was angry with my destiny, not with Amitabh Bachchan. I thought if destiny does not want me to work with Amit ji, I will work with someone new, so I made Mohra with Suniel Shetty." That decision turned out to be career-defining. Mohra, released in 1994, was a major hit, and along with Gupt, cemented Rai's legacy as one of the most daring and successful directors of 1990s Bollywood.
