Kothare made his directorial debut with Paani, which features performances by Rucha Vaidya, Subodh Bhave, Rajit Kapur, Kishor Kadam, Sachin Goswami, Mohanabai, Shripad Joshi and Vikas Pandurang Patil. The film was written by Nitin Dixit and is based on a story by Hanumant Kendre. Produced by Priyanka Chopra's Purple Pebble Pictures in collaboration with Neha Barjatya and Rajshri Entertainment, Paani was created with the aim of raising awareness about water conservation. Set in a drought-stricken village, the film highlights the struggles of a community facing an extreme water crisis. Paani premiered at the New York Film Festival and was honoured with the Best Film on Environment/Conservation/Preservation at the 66th National Film Awards in 2019. Last year, Priyanka Chopra also attended a special screening of the film in Mumbai alongside her mother, Dr. Madhu Chopra, and brother, Siddharth Chopra.
