Rapids 'capable' of deep run in Blast

Worcestershire head coach Alan Richardson says his squad head into this season's T20 Blast with "a lot of belief" they can go deep in the competition. The Pears, who play as the Worcestershire Rapids in white-ball cricket, start their campaign against Lancashire at Emirates Old Trafford on Thursday (18:30 BST) on the opening night of the revamped competition. The club won the Blast in 2018, beating Sussex in the final, and were runners-up the following year to Essex, narrowly failing to become the first team to successfully defend the trophy. The most recent of their six quarter-final appearances came in 2023 and Richardson is optimistic his squad can be in the mix for the knockout stage again. "I'd like to think so," he told BBC Hereford and Worcester. "Worcestershire, over recent years, have shown that we can. "We've got to a few quarter-finals and obviously we had 2018 and 2019 when we got to Finals Day and the final. "So we should go into the competition with a lot of belief." Revamped T20 Blast ready to ignite Pears sign New Zealand bowler Duffy for part of 2025 Worcestershire re-sign Dwarshuis for T20 Blast The Rapids have re-signed Australian left-arm fast bowler Ben Dwarshuis for this year's competition after he took 15 wickets in his first spell at New Road in 2021. He joins New Zealand quick Jacob Duffy who has been part of the County Championship side so far and will be available for the first eight Blast games. "T20 cricket is the most volatile [format of the game] and you have to roll with the punches," Richardson said. "This rollercoaster tends to be a lot quicker, and scarier at times, but the boys love it and enjoy it for what it is. "It's a long competition, so there will be plenty of opportunity for us to get some momentum together and play an as exciting brand of cricket as we can." This season's Blast is split across two blocks, with eight games being played before the red-ball Championship returns for two rounds in late June. The remaining six group games then take place in July. While Richardson accepts that changing formats is tough, he is embracing the challenge. "I think [the fact that] these competitions keep coming in and out really energises the players and being in their own mini blocks is really good," he said. "We'll have two Championship games in the middle, which brings its own challenges, but the idea that we have 14 T20 games in just under two months is something we really enjoy. "We're practising new skill sets and thinking about the change in mindset and the language about how we go about our cricket. "It's the same game but it feels like a completely different one at times and as a coach you have to see it positively as a challenge. "We've got a squad that's capable of being competitive and get towards those knock-out stages."

Hampshire Hawks set to kick off T20 Blast campaign against Essex

HAMPSHIRE Cricket will kick off their T20 Blast campaign with a double header against Essex's men's and women's teams at Utilita Bowl on Friday. The T20 cricket season is back, with this year's T20 Blast competition seeing men's and women's teams across all counties play side by side for the first time. Hampshire's players will again don their iconic yellow T20 kits this season, representing Hampshire Hawks, the club's T20 side. Hampshire Hawks' opening fixture forms part of the tournament's 'Blast-Off' round of fixtures, and will see the likes of Ben Brown, Chris Wood, Liam Dawson, Georgia Adams and Maia Bouchier all be hoping to kick off their campaigns in style. Hampshire Hawks are the most successful men's domestic side in T20 history, having won the competition three times. They will be hoping to bounce back from the disappointment of last year's competition, where they missed out on reaching finals day, and will be strengthened by the return of captain James Vince. Vince, a product of Hampshire's successful youth pathway, has played in all of the side's winning finals over the years. Vince recently moved to Dubai with his family but has committed to returning to captain the Hawks for this year's T20 Blast. Leading the Hawks' women's side is captain Adams, a club mainstay, having previously captained Southern Vipers, the former regional team based at Utilita Bowl, and the most successful women's domestic regional team. Looking ahead to this season's competition, Adams said: 'It's a really exciting time at the club, the whole team is ready to go out there and put in strong performances for the first time under the Hampshire name. 'We've started well in the one-day cup and now it's down to us to keep that momentum going. Despite the name change, a big percentage of the squad have achieved great things together in T20, and now we're all set on trying to repeat that success.' The men's competition is entering its 22nd year, while the women's teams will compete across two T20 Blast events, one contested by the eight counties from Tier One, including Hampshire. The competition will dominate June and July before the group stage comes to a high-stakes conclusion with 'Friday Finale' on July 18. 'Friday Finale' will see the women race for the three Finals Day spots while the men have a last chance to book their place in the quarter-finals with eight men's matches scheduled and all eight women's counties in action. The first-ever T20 Blast Women's Finals Day will be staged at the Kia Oval on Sunday, July 27, while the established T20 Blast Men's Finals Day taking place at Edgbaston on Saturday, September 13.

Cameron relishing Whalley's start to the new T20 season

Whalley's new captain Tom Cameron believes enjoyment is the key to success in T20 cricket as the start of the Birtwistle Cup approaches, writes Graham Hardcastle. The Anthony Axford North West Cricket League's 20-over competition - won last year by Lostock - begins across the next two Fridays, with 25 teams spilt across four groups. Conference sides Barrowford, Feniscowles and Foulridge will join the 22 teams in the Premiership and Championship as they bid to make it through to Finals Day on July 20. The top two sides in each group qualifies for the quarter-finals. Whalley finished top of Group Two North last season, winning three of five matches. Under wicketkeeper Cameron's leadership, they reached Finals Day at Lostock, but were beaten in the semi-final by Blackrod. Cameron has since taken over full-time from Frankie Jackson. 'It's just a confidence game, really,' said Cameron of T20. 'We were struggling in a league a bit last year, but everyone could almost free themselves up a bit in the T20s, and I think everyone was more confident and just enjoyed it more. 'We strung a few results together and carried it through. 'Hopefully we can do that again this year. I want everyone to express themselves, and hopefully that gives us that bit of momentum.' Whalley are in Group Two North again this year. They are placed alongside Barrowford, Baxenden, Cherry Tree, Feniscowles, Oswaldtwistle Immanuel and Salesbury. They begin their campaign tomorrow night away at Baxenden (6pm). Cameron believes Whalley, who have lost two and won one in the Championship so far this season, are a stronger proposition than last year, including being sharper in the field. That's partly due to a new overseas Australian batter Luke Reynolds, added to domestic signings Jamie Pilling (opening batter) and Josh Dentith (spinner). All-rounder Levi Wolfenden remains as professional. 'I'd say we've added experience more than anything,' said Cameron. Whalley's group is a particularly interesting one given it includes two Conference sides in Barrowford and Feniscowles. The former reached last year's quarter-finals, while the latter won the last ever Ribblesdale League T20 title in 2022. 'It's a very interesting group, obviously, because of that,' Cameron continued. 'They're a bit wild cards, like we saw with Barrowford last year. They could almost have any sub professional, really. 'But we're positive and hopeful that if we play like we did last year, we can get out of that group.' Cameron is a 20-year-old who is a Whalley lad through and through. He captained the club in junior cricket and started playing first-team cricket at the age of '13 or 14'. 'Just doing the T20s last year, I almost did the fun bit,' he said. 'But I'm definitely enjoying doing it full-time so far. I've got loads of senior players around me like Richard Palmer and Levi, who has been with us for three or four years as pro.' So being one of Whalley's own, what would it mean to Cameron if they were to go a couple of steps further than last year's semi-final finish and win the Birtwistle Cup? 'That would be really nice, yeah,' he added. 'It would definitely mean a lot, and there's no reason why we can't.' n Tomorrow's fixtures: Group Two North - Baxenden v Whalley, Cherry Tree v Barrowford, Oswaldtwistle Immanuel v Salesbury.
