Hampshire Hawks set to kick off T20 Blast campaign against Essex
HAMPSHIRE Cricket will kick off their T20 Blast campaign with a double header against Essex's men's and women's teams at Utilita Bowl on Friday.
The T20 cricket season is back, with this year's T20 Blast competition seeing men's and women's teams across all counties play side by side for the first time.
Hampshire's players will again don their iconic yellow T20 kits this season, representing Hampshire Hawks, the club's T20 side.
Hampshire Hawks' opening fixture forms part of the tournament's 'Blast-Off' round of fixtures, and will see the likes of Ben Brown, Chris Wood, Liam Dawson, Georgia Adams and Maia Bouchier all be hoping to kick off their campaigns in style.
Hampshire Hawks are the most successful men's domestic side in T20 history, having won the competition three times.
They will be hoping to bounce back from the disappointment of last year's competition, where they missed out on reaching finals day, and will be strengthened by the return of captain James Vince.
Vince, a product of Hampshire's successful youth pathway, has played in all of the side's winning finals over the years. Vince recently moved to Dubai with his family but has committed to returning to captain the Hawks for this year's T20 Blast.
Leading the Hawks' women's side is captain Adams, a club mainstay, having previously captained Southern Vipers, the former regional team based at Utilita Bowl, and the most successful women's domestic regional team.
Looking ahead to this season's competition, Adams said: 'It's a really exciting time at the club, the whole team is ready to go out there and put in strong performances for the first time under the Hampshire name.
'We've started well in the one-day cup and now it's down to us to keep that momentum going. Despite the name change, a big percentage of the squad have achieved great things together in T20, and now we're all set on trying to repeat that success.'
The men's competition is entering its 22nd year, while the women's teams will compete across two T20 Blast events, one contested by the eight counties from Tier One, including Hampshire.
The competition will dominate June and July before the group stage comes to a high-stakes conclusion with 'Friday Finale' on July 18.
'Friday Finale' will see the women race for the three Finals Day spots while the men have a last chance to book their place in the quarter-finals with eight men's matches scheduled and all eight women's counties in action.
The first-ever T20 Blast Women's Finals Day will be staged at the Kia Oval on Sunday, July 27, while the established T20 Blast Men's Finals Day taking place at Edgbaston on Saturday, September 13.

3 Texas A&M players included in Pro Football Focus's Top 50 2026 NFL Draft prospects
3 Texas A&M players included in Pro Football Focus's Top 50 2026 NFL Draft prospects Texas A&M's 2025 football roster isn't lacking talent at any position. While the disappointing 1-4 finish during the 2024 season still haunts most of the Aggie fan base, it's time to move on and look ahead, as the 2025 campaign, which his highly critical for coach Mike Elko's future, is less than 100 days away. This offseason, during several speaking events, Elko emphasized the importance of building the program through recruiting elite talent and developing prospects to send to the NFL ultimately. During the 2025 NFL draft, only three Aggies heard their names called, led by junior edge Shemar Stewart, who was selected with the 17th overall selection by the Cincinnati Bengals. Followed by edge Nic Scourton (Carolina Panthers) and defensive lineman Shemar Stewart (Chicago Bears) going early in the second round, three players drafted isn't a good number for most SEC programs, outside of Vanderbilt, but this was mainly due to several veterans, including left tackle Trey Zuhn, right guard Ar'maj Reed-Adams, and running back Le'Veon Moss, who would have been selected in the early rounds. For the 2026 NFL draft, Pro Football Focus believes Texas A&M will have at least three players guaranteed to be selected in the first two or three rounds, led by linebacker Taurean York, guard Ar'maj Reed-Adams, and wide receiver KC Concepcion, who transferred to College Station from NC State this offseason. Here is where each player landed in PFF's Top 50 2026 NFL prospects Taurean York (23rd) Ar'Maj Reed-Adams (28th) KC Concepcion (35th) Two former Aggies were also ranked, led by defensive tackle LT Overton (20th) and, former Texas A&M QB turned star Vanderbilt tight end Eli Stowers finsihing the rankings at No. 50. Texas A&M needs to take advantage of the talent and experience on the roster, which would be a shame, and detrimental to the coaching staff to waste in 2025. Wildfire warning issued after blaze on common
Firefighters have warned of the risk of wildfires in warm and dry weather after a blaze in north Hampshire. Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to Eversley Common, near Basingstoke, at around 16:00 BST on Saturday. Crews used beaters and hose reels to tackle the fire, which covered about five hectares of woodland and gorse. It took more than five hours, two fire engines, multiple 4×4 vehicles, water carriers and support from forces in Surrey and Berkshire to extinguish the blaze. The cause of the fire was unknown but crews from Hampshire were due to return to the site on Sunday to check for hotspots, said the fire service. Search for missing girl, 15, feared drowned in East River enters second day
A desperate search for a missing 15-year-old girl feared drowned in New York City's East River under the Roosevelt Island Bridge entered its second day Saturday. After a night of heavy rains, NYPD scuba divers were expected to go back into the waters between Queens and Roosevelt Island on Saturday and attempt to recover the girl's body, officials said. The girl was sitting on the rocks, wearing a bathing suit with a flower pattern on it, when she fell into the river, police said Saturday. The teen is believed to be from the Upper East Side, WABC Eyewitness News reported. The teen entered the East River at about 12:15 p.m. on Friday, cops said. When she didn't resurface, a friend she was with called 911. Responding officers found a bookbag near the water that they believe belongs to the teen, who has not been publicly identified. Cops have not recovered any bodies in the East River in the last 24 hours, a police spokesman said. The currents in the East River are quite strong, and may have been one of the causes why the Mexican Navy ship Cuauhtémoc crashed into the Brooklyn Bridge earlier this month. 'Our currents and tides are very strong,' Adams said when the Cuauhtémoc crashed. 'People don't realize that people fall in the river by the Statue of Liberty and find themselves in the Bronx somewhere.'
