US consumers to bear brunt of tariff hit, Goldman economists say

The impact of President Donald Trump's tariffs on consumer prices is just getting started, according to research by Goldman Sachs Group Inc., adding more uncertainty to a Treasury market that has been gripped by shifting bets on the pace of interest rate cuts. US companies have so far taken the bulk of the hit from Trump's tariffs but the burden will increasingly be passed on to consumers as companies hike prices, economists including Jan Hatzius wrote in a note. Consumers in the US have absorbed an estimated 22% of tariff costs through June, but their share will rise to 67% if the latest tariffs follow the pattern of levies in previous years, they wrote. The core personal consumer expenditure index, one of the Federal Reserve's favorite measures of inflation, will hit 3.2% year-on-year in December, according to the Goldman analysts. They said underlying inflation net of tariffs would be 2.4%. The rate was 2.8% in June. The report adds weight to a widespread view among economists that Trump's sweeping tariffs will fuel inflation at a time when Fed policy has become a hot topic not just for bond traders but even for the president himself. Trump has broken convention by publicly calling for the Federal Reserve to cut rates, suggesting Fed Chair Jerome Powell should resign and adding an ally — at least temporarily — to the monetary policy committee. Bloomberg Live Events Bond traders are now looking ahead to Tuesday's inflation data for clues on how fast the Fed can cut. Treasury 10-year yields rose around seven basis points last week, but fell during European trading hours Monday. Traders are pricing in a more than 80% chance of a rate cut at the Fed's next meeting in September, but the prospect of more easing in the months to come is clouded by the uncertain impact of tariffs on inflation. Staggered Impact Most economists consider tariffs to be inflationary, since logic suggests companies will pass the additional costs onto their customers. But the view isn't unanimous — and the debate partly comes down to definitions. 'Inflation, certainly as it's relevant to a central bank setting monetary policy, concerns an ongoing increase in the overall price level,' said Oren Cass, founder and chief economist at American Compass, in a recent episode of Bloomberg's Trumponomics podcast. 'If you choose a specific policy that by design makes a one-time change in the price of certain things, that is not inflation in a sense that you would want a central bank to worry about.' Goldman's analysis, which suggests businesses have held back from an all-at-once increase in prices, supports the argument that tariffs will ultimately be inflationary. The bank said tariff effects have boosted core PCE by 0.2% so far, with another 0.16% expected in July and an additional 0.5% over the rest of the year. While American businesses have taken around 64% of the hit from tariffs so far, their share will fall to less than 10% as they pass on more of the costs onto consumers, according to the report. The analysts added that the impact on US businesses has been mixed — while some have taken a larger share of the tariff hit, domestic producers shielded from competition have raised prices and benefited. Those opportunistic price rises also push up inflation. Foreign exporters have absorbed an estimated 14% of the cost of tariffs through June, but their share may rise to 25%, Goldman said. The impact on foreign exporters can be gauged from a slight decline in import prices on tariffed goods, they said

Bihar polls: Law doesn't require sharing list of people missing from electoral rolls, ECI tells SC

New Delhi: The Election Commission of India ( ECI ) has told the Supreme Court that the law does not require it to prepare or share any separate list of names of people missing from draft electoral rolls or publish the reasons for their non-inclusion "for any reason" whatsoever. Responding on the allegations by NGO Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) that over 65 lakh names had been deleted from Bihar's draft electoral rolls without transparency and without disclosure of whether the deletions related to deceased persons, migrants, or other categories, ECI said no eligible voter in Bihar will be removed from the electoral rolls without prior notice during the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) in the state. Reiterating the need for an opportunity to be heard and a reasoned order, the poll panel stressed that "strict directions" have been issued to prevent wrongful deletions during the ongoing special intensive revision (SIR) in the state. The top court has already fixed the hearing on August 12 and 13 of a batch of pleas challenging the Election Commission of India's move to conduct SIR of electoral rolls in poll-bound Bihar. Live Events The affidavit further stated, "After the publication of the draft rolls, the political parties were supplied with an updated list of names of electors not included in the draft roll so as to ensure all attempts are made to reach out to these individuals and no eligible elector is left out. The political parties have acknowledged receipt of the said list. Here, it is also pertinent to point out that the list includes acknowledgements on behalf of CPI(M-L) as well." Booth Level Officers (BLOs) had held polling station meetings with Booth Level Agents (BLAs) of political parties on August 7, almost a week after the publication of the preliminary electoral roll on August 1, it said. The poll panel submitted, "The list of electors whose names could not be included in the draft electoral roll were read out and shared and appeals were made to the BLAs and others to reach out to them so that no eligible voter can be left out."

No political party has filed claim or objection on electoral rolls till 11 am today: Election Commission

Patna: Political parties are yet to file any objection or claim regarding the addition or deletion of voters in the revised draft electoral roll in poll-bound Bihar, as no such claims have come in till 11 AM on Monday, Election Commission of India said. Releasing its daily bulletin today, the poll body said that from August 1 to August 11, over 1,60,813 Booth Level Agents across national and state parties have not filed any objections or claims to the draft roll prepared after the enumeration forms were collected as part of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The Election Commission, in its daily bulletin has reiterated that "as per SIR orders, no name can be deleted from the draft list publishing on August 1, 2025 without passing a speaking order by the ERO/AERO after conducting an enquiry and after giving a fair and reasonable opportunity." Live Events The Bihar SIR has been repeatedly criticised by the Opposition parties, calling the revision as unconstitutional and alleging that voter list manipulation might happen to favour a particular political party. The Opposition has been protesting against the SIR in and out of Parliament, also planning a march to ECI's AShoka road office from Parliament on Monday. Senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh has alleged that all the Booth Level Officers (BLOs) are filling out "fake forms" in one room while making the announcement for the march. Notably, the ECI has granted an appointment for an interaction at 12 PM with Congress, after the party levied serious allegations of fraud in elections, and the ECI "colluding" with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to "destroy the electoral system in India." The appointment is granted in response to Jairam Ramesh's request on "behalf of certain political parties". The Election Commission has requested to submit the names of upto 30 people along with their vehicle numbers for the interaction due to the limitation of space. The agenda of the meeting is not mentioned in the letter. However, the Opposition has been constantly raising questions over Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar, accusing the poll body of "vote theft".

Nifty could see short covering on direct rise above 24,433: Anand James

Since the turn lower from June, all penetrations of lower bollinger band were followed by a recovery candle on the next day, which boosts the hope for a pullback move early in the week, says Anand James , Chief Market Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited . Edited excerpts from a chat: Productivity Tool Zero to Hero in Microsoft Excel: Complete Excel guide By Metla Sudha Sekhar View Program Finance Introduction to Technical Analysis & Candlestick Theory By Dinesh Nagpal View Program Finance Financial Literacy i e Lets Crack the Billionaire Code By CA Rahul Gupta View Program Digital Marketing Digital Marketing Masterclass by Neil Patel By Neil Patel View Program Finance Technical Analysis Demystified- A Complete Guide to Trading By Kunal Patel View Program Productivity Tool Excel Essentials to Expert: Your Complete Guide By Study at home View Program Artificial Intelligence AI For Business Professionals Batch 2 By Ansh Mehra View Program Nifty has made a record sixth consecutive negative weekly fall. How bearish are we on the charts? Since the turn lower from June, all penetrations of lower bollinger band were followed by a recovery candle on the next day. This boosts the hope for a pull back move early in the week, as last Friday saw a close below the lower bollinger band. That said, the 200 day SMA, now positioned at 24049 is clearly pulling Nifty, with 23722 offering fibo support below. Alternatively, direct rise above 24433 could spark short covering . Do you think that the uptick that we saw in Nifty PSU Bank is sustainable or there could be profit booking ahead? After a fortnight of selling, the Nifty PSU Bank index witnessed a pullback this week from a horizontal support zone that has held since June. However, the last trading day of the week formed a doji candle, casting a doubt on the reversal's strength. On the weekly chart, the technical setup has not turned bullish yet, with the MACD still vulnerable to a bearish signal crossover. From a derivatives perspective, 85% of F&O stocks saw short additions on Friday. However, on a weekly basis, 71% of these stocks still hold long positions, indicating mixed sentiment. From a stock-specific angle, SBIN, PNB, Union Bank, and Indian Bank—which together constitute around 63% of the index—have shown early signs of a reversal. Notably, SBI formed a pinbar doji on Friday, adding weight to a reversal narrative. We see the Nifty PSU Bank index opening on a weak note next week, but support for reversal attempts may be expected from SBI, PNB, Union Bank, and Indian Bank. The broader market has been seeing sharper cuts. Do you think this relative underperformance could continue as traders remain cautious amid tariff-related stress? Live Events While 46% of Nifty 50 constituents had a positive weekly close, only about 30% of Nifty 500 stocks did the same. So, yes, broader marker struggling when compared to the benchmark index, with small caps leading the declines, as only 24% of the small cap index had a positive weekly close. This shows that the traders are largely risk averse. This is also reflected in the number of stocks closing below pervious week's lows. While 55% of small cap indices did so, only 36% of Nifty 50 constituents did so. As Nifty 50 approaches it 200 day SMA, 46% of its constituents are already below this key MA, while 58% of the small cap constituents have already sunk before their respective 200 day SMA. This is not an extreme yet, which suggests some more pain before a reversal is seen. Give us your top picks for the week. MAHLOG (CMP: 322) View: Buy Target: 348 SL: 299 The stock has been declining since July and now appears to be attempting a pullback. On Thursday, it formed a bullish engulfing candle, followed by another green candle, indicating a potential reversal. Additionally, the MACD histogram is showing signs of exhaustion at lower levels, and a hammer candle on the weekly chart adds further weight to the reversal narrative. We expect the stock to move towards 348 in the near term. All long positions should be protected with a stop-loss placed below the 299 level. CMSINFO (CMP: 444) View: Buy Target: 475 SL: 430 The stock has been in a pullback phase since July and now appears to be attempting a reversal. It formed a bullish engulfing candle pattern on Thursday, signaling early signs of a potential turnaround. Additionally, the 14-day RSI is below 30, indicating an oversold condition, while the MACD histogram is showing signs of exhaustion at lower levels, both supporting the reversal attempt. We expect the stock to move towards 475 in the near term. All long positions should be protected with a stop-loss placed below the 430 level.
