AFL 2025: Hawthorn coach Sam Mitchell rules Finn Maginness out for the season
Hawthorn will complete its push for the premiership without Finn Maginness after coach Sam Mitchell ruled him out for the remainder of the season. Maginness sustained a lacerated kidney during his side's win over Port Adelaide in Launceston last weekend. Despite being rushed to hospital post game, it's unclear when and how the injury occurred. Maginness has remained in Tasmania alongside medical professionals, family and Hawthorn staff members. Mitchell said Maginness had improved but the club had parked a return date this season to prioritise his health. 'He came up after the game with a bit of soreness. Obviously, looking at it with hindsight it seems like easy decisions,' he said. 'Like, 'Oh, we'll just get him home to Melbourne and then we'll work it out'. 'I think our medical team have done a great job in making sure that firstly he stayed. We probably got a bit lucky that Scott and Anna were there, his parents. 'I rang him yesterday, she answered, he was having a bit of work done. Rob McCartney is down there, our head of football went down there for a few days. 'He's feeling supported but feeling pretty ordinary, so unfortunately it means his season is going to be over from an on-field sense. That's probably at the back of our minds at the moment.' Maginness' exit is softened by the return of star Will Day. Day has not played in four months since his sizzling start to the 2025 season. Mitchell remained unsure on the selection of forward Mabior Chol, who has battled a groin injury, after a short turnaround and travel between the Hawks' matches. 'If it was the last game of the season (Chol) could play, but he's going to be up against it after that,' he said. 'We're leaning towards not playing him and giving him another week. That's not 100 per cent confirmed but I suspect it will be another one.'

Hawthorn star rushed to hospital for emergency surgery following clash with Port Adelaide
Hawks midfielder Finn Maginness was flown to hospital with a lacerated kidney following his side's victory over Port Adelaide on Saturday. The 24-year-old was experiencing unexplained pain in his abdomen following the match at University of Tasmania Stadium. He was transported to Launceston General Hospital, where it was soon determined he would need surgery at Royal Hobart Hospital to repair the laceration. Maginness will remain there for multiple days until he recovers, reports footy reporter Mitch Cleary. Hawks doctor Liam West delivered an update on Sunday. 'Finn's health is clearly our number one priority, and right now, the most important thing is that Finn is ok, is in the right place and he will recover fully,' West said. 'Finn will continue to spend this initial period of medical observation during his recovery in Hobart before any timeline for his return to play can be determined. 'We want to take this opportunity to thank the medical staff at LGH & the Royal Hobart for the fantastic care they have provided Finn.' The Hawks booted five goals to one in the last term in a 13.9 (87) to 7.7 (49) victory in atrocious conditions in Launceston. Hawthorn antagonist Jack Ginnivan iced the win in near-freezing conditions with the last goal of the game - and then made an aeroplane motion with his arms. The celebration followed Power coach Ken Hinkley being fined $20,000 for a similar reaction, plus verbal taunting, of Ginnivan and Hawk players after they lost last year's semi-final. 'Payback is deserved,' Hinkley later said. 'I have no problems with it and I am OK with it, I think it's good for the game, the theatre of the game. 'And good on Jack ... and Hawthorn themselves as a club. I won't be one that sits here and does anything but acknowledge that it was my turn today.' Hawk coach Sam Mitchell could also see the lighter side of the exchange. 'That is what you're going to get from Jack,'' he said. 'The banter between the clubs made a little bit more interest in the game. 'We finish the year one (win) each ... but it's good to get one back against Port because they have obviously caused us some pain and trauma, and all the Hawks fans some pain and trauma, over the last 12 months.'

Hawthorn midfielder Finn Maginness flown to hospital for surgery after suffering lacerated kidney
Hawthorn midfielder Finn Maginness is in hospital with a lacerated kidney following his side's clash against Port Adelaide on Saturday. The 24-year-old complained of soreness and discomfort in the abdomen region after the match, despite no clear sole incident that appeared to cause it. Maginness was taken to a Launceston hospital as a precaution after the game, where an assessment determined that he needed to be flown down to Hobart to undergo a procedure. 7NEWS Melbourne's Mitch Cleary, who broke the news on Seven's Sunday Footy Feast, said Maginness will be kept in hospital for several days. 'Hawthorn's Finn Maginness is in hospital with a lacerated kidney,' Cleary said. 'Felt discomfort post-game, was taken to hospital in Launceston for assessment, before he was transferred to a Hobart hospital to go under the knife. 'He's expected to remain there for multiple days.'

Live updates: Fremantle look to silence finals critics in massive Hawthorn test
Fremantle have made a bold positional call as they look to answer their finals critics in a Saturday night blockbuster against Hawthorn. Ruckman Sean Darcy has curiously been named on the wing, while Hawks tagger Finn Maginness has been named on the bench. Can the Dockers answer some questions around their finals credentials and down the Hollywood Hawks? Follow all the action live! The Dockers have won six of their last seven matches against Hawthorn by an average winning margin of 35 points. Serong is obviously the key as he was last week but the ruck battle between fromer Docker Lloyd Meek and Luke Jackson, and Sean Darcy will also have a huge say.

Collingwood v Hawthorn AFL Round 12: Live updates, SuperCoach scores, teams
Nick Daicos may have snapped a mid-season malaise at halftime against North Melbourne. After three uncharacteristically low SuperCoach scores – 89, 79, 95 – and some heavy tags, Daicos was looking at another middling tally when he entered the main break with 10 disposals and two marks. But he exploded after the break, racking up 11 touches in the third quarter and 17 in the last to signal an ominous return to form ahead of a Friday night clash against Hawthorn. The one possible catch – he could run into occasional Hawks stopper Finn Maginness, who famously restricted Daicos to just five disposals in round 21, 2023.
