Man arrested on charges he shot woman in her Naperville home Friday night
A Chicago man who allegedly shot a woman in her home Friday night has been arrested on two felony charges, according to DuPage County court records. The suspect, 33-year-old Carnell Polsey, was faces one count each of reckless discharge of a firearm and aggravated battery. He was denied pretrial release at a court appearance Saturday. The 33-year-old victim told police she returned to her home in the 1800 block of Santa Fe Drive about 8:30 p.m. to allegedly find Polsey lying in the living room holding a handgun and smelling of alcohol, records said. While the two were no longer a couple after dating for about 15 years, the woman had been allowing Polsey to stay with her for about three weeks. When she asked Polsey why he had a gun, he allegedly told it was for protection, the report said. The woman said him guns were not supposed to be inside the house and told him to leave, according to her account. As she walked to her bedroom where her 9- and 15-year-old sons were sleeping, she 'heard a pop' and started bleeding from her leg, according to court records. Police were called and the victim initially taken to Edward Hospital in Naperville before being moved to Good Samaritan Hospital, where court records say she was last reported to be in stable condition. The victim told police she thinks Polsey shot her by accident because he was allegedly intoxicated, court records state. The children also told police that Polsey was drunk that evening. Polsey also allegedly kicked a Naperville police officer in the torso as he was being placed inside a squad car, according to court records. Two firearms were recovered from the scene: a polymer P90 unserialized firearm — commonly referred to as a 'ghost gun' — and a 1911 .45-caliber pistol. Court records also said Polsey, who told police he hadn't intended to fire the gun, did not possess a Firearm Owners Identification card. His next court appearance is scheduled for Aug. 11. The Naperville Police Department did not put out a news release on the shooting over the weekend because 'these types of incidents are often joint releases with the (DuPage) county,' Naperville police Cmdr. Rick Krakow said in an email.

Urbana man pleads guilty to weapon charges, sentenced to 8 years
DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — A traffic stop that took place in 2023 led to a former Urbana man pleading guilty to the aggravated unlawful use of a weapon last week. 27-year-old Warren Montgomery pleaded guilty to the class 2 felony on Feb. 26, 2025, and was sentenced to eight years in prison. Woman found dead inside burning house in Danville According to Vermilion County State's Attorney Jacqueline Lacy, on July 16, 2023, an officer with the Danville Police Department spotted a Gold Volkswagen Tiguan that was missing rear lights. The officer conducted a traffic stop, and while the officer was able to identify the driver, the passenger refused to identify himself. The driver had a valid driver's license and a Firearm Owners Identification (FOID) card, and said there was a firearm in the vehicle. The driver also said that a magazine was in a glove box. The driver gave consent for a vehicle search, according to Lacy, and the officer found a magazine and a Taurus G3C 9mm handgun that did not belong to the driver. The Taurus G3C belonged to the passenger, who was eventually identified as Warren Montgomery. Montgomery had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear in court, as well as a previous conviction for aggravated unlawful use of weapons. Second defendant in Lerna murder case sentenced to prison 'This case shows the crucial role police officers play in keeping our community safe. The diligence of this Danville Police officer during a traffic stop helped to remove an illegal firearm from the street and we were able to hold another repeat offender accountable. My office will continue to work with police in our community to protect the good People of Vermilion County and to uphold the law,' Lacy said. Montgomery will serve eight years with the Illinois Department of Corrections and will also serve one year of mandatory supervised release following his prison sentence. Oak Brook traffic stop nets felony gun charge for Villa Park man
A traffic stop early Wednesday morning in Oak Brook resulted in the arrest of a Villa Park man, who was charged with one count of unlawful possession of a firearm by a repeat felony offender — a Class X felony — and one count of misdemeanor unlawful possession of marijuana by driver, police said. Joshua Griffin, 31, of the 500 block of North Third Avenue, in the western suburb, reportedly was stopped by Oak Brook police about 12:15 a.m. Feb. 19 near 22nd Street and Park View Drive, as the vehicle driven by Griffin had suspended license plates, police said. During the traffic stop, officers conducted a search of the vehicle, after reportedly detecting the odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. Oak Brook police reported searching the vehicle and finding a loaded, Taurus .40 caliber handgun in the glove box. Further investigation revealed that Griffin is a convicted felon, who does not have a valid Firearm Owners Identification card or Concealed Carry License, according to information from the office of DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin. 'By law, as a convicted felon Mr. Griffin has forfeited his right to possess a firearm.,' Berlin said in a statement. 'Because of his alleged actions, Mr. Griffin now finds himself facing a possible penalty of between six to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.' 'Our officers remain vigilant in looking beyond traffic stops and taking guns off the street from individuals that do not legally possess them,' Oak Brook police Chief Brian Strockis added. DuPage County Judge Joshua Dieden granted the state's motion to deny pretrial release for Griffin, whose next court date is scheduled for March 17 in front of DuPage County Judge Daniel Guerin.
