Chicago Fire Boss Previews Severide's Pascal Doubts, Carver and Ritter's Goodbyes… and Future Returns?

Has Dom Pascal lost his strongest ally at Firehouse 51? During last week's Chicago Fire, the chief was taken away by cops after he became the prime suspect in the murder of the man who killed Pascal's wife, Monica, in a car accident. Lieutenant Severide stood by Pascal's side, and he'll continue to do so in this Wednesday's season finale (airing at 9/8c on NBC). But even as the firefighter puts his job on the line by trying to clear Pascal, Severide will also have doubts about the man he's defending. Wedding First Look: Burgess and Ruzek Finally Tie the Knot The Voice Recap: Did Season 27's Finale Just Set the Stage for an Underdog to Come Out on Top? 'There's a lot of mysteries that need to be solved and cards turned over to get this done, and I think Severide is a man on a mission to help Pascal,' showrunner Andrea Newman previews, 'but he can't help but have this nagging feeling that maybe he's helping somebody who he shouldn't be helping. Maybe he's not going to get the answer he wants once he finally does turn over all those cards.' Despite all the good things that Pascal has done to ingratiate himself with the 51 crew, he's also proven himself to be something of a wild card, and he's looking awfully guilty when it comes to this particular case. 'The one thing that we've learned over the course of the season is that Monica was Pascal's Achilles' heel,' Newman says. 'When Bishop messed with Monica, all of a sudden, his garage was on fire. When Vale flirted with her, Pascal showed up at Vale's door and punched him in the stomach. If anything's going to set Pascal off, it's anybody that does anything to Monica or talks badly of Monica.' So Severide will 'have to wonder' if Pascal did something bad to avenge his wife's tragic death, Newman teases. As the show unravels the mystery of what Pascal did or didn't do, it will also be preparing to say goodbye to Sam Carver and Darren Ritter, whose portrayers, Jake Lockett and Daniel Kyri, will not return as series regulars next season. Newman isn't giving up too many details about how the firefighters will be written out, but she is leaving the door open for them to return one day. 'Our characters have always — and this is the luxury of 13 seasons — but a bunch of them have come and gone and come back,' Newman says. 'There's still so much to be figured out with those two and those characters. We love the actors, we love the characters, and we want to give them some good, surprising moments and goodbyes, and then maybe hellos later down the line.' Speaking about Carver and Ritter's exits, Newman acknowledges that 'there weren't a lot of creative decisions behind it, because it all became this, like, axe falling across the network,' she shares. (Our sister site Deadline reported that budget cuts were responsible for the departures.) 'We love these characters and could play with them forever,' Newman continues. That said, 'there's always fun in bringing somebody new in, as well, and you have to shake these things up. And Pascal is the best example of that, because Pascal came in this year and kind of turned everybody spinning. It wasn't just that character in the room, it was how everybody else reacted to him that was fun to play. So mixing it up is always a good thing, and we'll write to that next season… Change isn't always good at 51, but then sometimes, it surprises you and lifts everybody up.' fans, hit the comments with your predictions for the season finale! Plot for 'The Bad Guy' Episode 21, 'The Bad Guy,' promises a compelling narrative with several key storylines intertwining. The central plotline revolves around the unsettling aftermath of a deadly car crash. The situation takes a particularly personal and potentially volatile turn when the individual directly responsible for the tragic death of Chief Dom Pascal's wife is rescued from a separate accident. This unexpected rescue forces the firehouse team to confront a painful past. Adding to the tension and creating suspicion within Firehouse 51, evidence emerges that suggests a piece of their own firehouse equipment might have been involved in the initial deadly car crash. This revelation raises serious questions and casts a shadow of doubt over the team, hinting at the possibility of someone within their ranks being implicated. Meanwhile, amidst the high-stakes emergency calls and internal investigations, personal relationships continue to evolve. Stella Kidd and Sylvie Brett's sister, Natalie, will share quality time together during a road trip, allowing them to further develop their burgeoning connection and strengthen their bond. For Violet Mikami, professional recognition arrives in the form of a feature in a local newspaper. This newfound attention also brings a significant career opportunity her way, potentially altering her trajectory within the firehouse. However, the team as a whole faces a looming threat that could impact everyone's future: the possibility of layoffs. The efficiency expert, Ambrose, continues his assessment of Firehouse 51, scrutinizing Herrmann's leadership decisions and identifying potential redundancies within the team. Veteran firefighters like Christopher Herrmann and Randall "Mouch" McHolland find themselves directly in the line of questioning and potential cuts. Mouch, ever the steadfast and loyal member of Firehouse 51, vehemently pushes back against Ambrose's evaluations, firmly stating that they are not going anywhere. The ultimate impact of Ambrose's efficiency measures and the potential for layoffs remains a significant point of suspense as the season nears its conclusion. Chicago Fire Warns of Layoffs and Forced Retirements — Which Character(s) Will Get Cut?

The arrival of an efficiency expert brought bad news to Chicago Fire this week. During this Wednesday's episode, the city sends Ambrose to audit Firehouse 51, which has the whole crew groaning in displeasure, especially because they're down several team members. (Severide and Stella get called to the hospital, where a woman is in labor and has chosen them as the baby's adoptive parents, but ends up changing her mind. Meanwhile, Pascal is taking the day off, Carver is still part-time until he completes his recovery program, and Violet and Novak are assigned to an event at the convention center.) More from TVLine Ambrose rides along with Engine to their rescue call, timer in hand, and proceeds to clock everything. Back at the firehouse, he questions Herrmann's backup plan. 'Redundancy is the thief of efficiency,' he says, to which Herrmann counters that they wouldn't be having this conversation if he was first responder. As critical as Ambrose is of 51, they still come to his help when he passes out from heat exhaustion. Once recovered, he lets Herrmann and Mouch know that the firehouse passed the test — but big cuts are coming soon from the city. They can expect layoffs and forced retirements, with probationary and older firefighters the first to go. Mouch reminds Ambrose of everything he and Herrmann have accomplished, then adds, 'Us old timers are not going anywhere.' But do they really have a choice? And with Herrmann still somewhat non-committal about becoming chief, could that be even more reason for CFD to let him go? Or do you think someone else from 51 will be cut? Could these layoffs end up explaining how the show plans to write out Ritter and Carver, whose portrayers will not return for the recently announced 14th season? It's also worth noting that, according to Deadline, contracts are up for some veteran #OneChicago cast members like Fire star Taylor Kinney, with negotiations underway. Should those talks not go well, the layoffs twist could cushion the sudden disappearance of any characters at the top of next season. Who Got Hurt on Chicago Fire? Near-Death Call Makes Fan-Favorite Character Return

During Chicago Fire's heart-stopping April 16 episode, Firehouse 51 processed one of its most harrowing rescues yet after firefighter Jack Damon (Michael Bradway) was left critically injured during a chaotic accident. The event not only threatened Damon's life but also prompted former Chief Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) to return to 51, this time as the Deputy Commissioner investigating the ill-fated call. After Boden caught wind of a 51 member fighting for his life in the hospital, Boden got down to business trying to make sense of the madness. And he wasn't playing games. A firefighter landing on life support demands a meticulous investigation, which made for a tense reunion between Boden and his former colleagues as they waited for news on Damon's condition. RELATED: After several excruciating hours of checking the clock, Firehouse 51 was elated to learn that Damon had woken up in the hospital. But Damon's injuries were extensive, and he's not out of the woods yet. After struggling in the CFD floater pool, Damon recently hopped aboard Firehouse 51 at the recommendation of his half-brother, Kelly Severide (Taylor Kinney). Eager to go above and beyond to prove himself, Damon has been working hard during rescues. But the scene of a house fire ended up being his downfall during Fire's "Post Mortem." After 51 saved the tenants inside, Herrmann ordered all firefighters to evacuate, but there was a miscount during the mass exodus. Boden helped illuminate the lieutenants on where it all went wrong; Damon's recent transfer and the return of Sam Carver (Jake Lockett) caused the numbers of firefighters to get mixed up, leading Damon to be unintentionally abandoned in the attic. Damon passed out from smoke inhalation as his alarm began pinging, and while Severide was able to get his brother out of the pandemonium, Damon wasn't looking good. After being rushed to Chicago Med, Damon luckily pulled through. RELATED: While Severide and the rest of Firehouse 51 were elated to visit Damon to celebrate his recovery, Damon remained broken over the incident. After Severide asked what the doctors told him, Damon tearfully confessed that he had been "lucky" to survive and that there was evidence of lung breakdown in his X-ray. Damon wouldn't know if his lungs were permanently damaged until further testing, but any lung damage is a firefighter's worst nightmare. "What if it's bad, Kelly?" Damon choked out. Severide reassured Damon that there were treatments and that they'd figure it out together. To find out what happens next, watch Chicago Fire Wednesdays at 9/8c on NBC and next day on Peacock.

Chicago Fire Cast Shake-Up: Two Series Regulars Out

Firehouse 51 is losing a couple of key crew members: Chicago Fire cast members Daniel Kyri and Jake Lockett are leaving the NBC drama at season's end and won't return if the show is renewed for a 14th season, our sister site Deadline reports. The report says the cast exits are 'part of an effort to trim the budget' of the long-running drama and come 'amid rumblings about cuts across Wolf Entertainment's NBC series.' It's possible Fire's remaining cast members will see another reduction in the number of episodes they appear in each season, following a similar reduction two years ago. A renewal for Season 14, while still not official, seems likely; our handy-dandy Renewal Scorecard has it as 'a sure thing.' More from TVLine ADVERTISEMENT Kyri debuted in Season 7 as firefighter Darren Ritter, becoming a series regular in Season 9. Lockett joined the cast in Season 11 as firefighter Sam Carver and was just elevated to series regular this season. One silver lining: The current season of Chicago Fire is still in production, so 'Darren and Sam may get a proper ending for their characters,' per Deadline.
