Bargain Hunt star back on show weeks after being cleared in domestic abuse trial
Charles Hanson has today returned to Bargain Hunt after being cleared following his domestic abuse trial, where he was accused of violence against his wife over a ten-year period BBC Bargain Hunt star Charles Hanson has returned to the show weeks after he was unanimously cleared of coercive control and assault allegations relating to his wife Rebecca. The auctioneer, who has also been an expert on Flog It! and Antiques Roadshow, appeared on a segment during Monday's show as fans took to social media to celebrate his return. He had been accused of assaulting her every six months for a decade, and was arrested in June 2023. During the trial, which began on February 10, the court heard allegations Hanson violently put her in a headlock while she was pregnant. He plead not guilty to the charges, and said that he felt relieved that "the truth has finally come out" after he was cleared. Today he was back on TV and the move went down well with many of the show's fans on X. One wrote: Good to see @HansonsAuctions back on the bbc #bargainhunt" as another put: "Charles Hanson is back!!!" A third was also thrilled, writing: "Ooooh Charles is back now he's been acquitted" with a party emoji. Outside the courtroom, the Bargain Hunt star told reporters: "I'm delighted that after a year and a half the truth has finally come out. I can finally live my life again. "I feel this burden has finally been lifted. It has been a tormentous time and all I want now is to readjust to what has been such an ordeal. I am so relieved that this is all over.' Mrs Hanson, who gave evidence from behind a screen during the trial, told the court that some of the attacks had left her bruised. Recalling an incident in 2012, Rebecca told the court: "I was pregnant. I was in my dressing gown, we were having an argument about something," she said. "I threw a tiny box which landed about two inches in front of him and he went for me. "He just ran towards me straight away. I turned around to protect my stomach, my baby, and he got me around the throat," she said. "It was tight, with my head back. He was stood behind me. The crook of his elbow was in my throat." Hanson's wife also told the court she was "absolutely petrified" during the incident as she added: "He was not trying to choke me, he was trying to control me. He was angry." She said: "I froze, paralysed with fear, he was shocked at what he had done, there was no explanation, I could not believe what he had done." Later in the trial, Hanson alleged he was "almost a slave" to his wife and said he was left a "beaten and broken man" as he alleged his wife controlled him and made him subservient to her. As he gave evidence to the court during the trial, he was questioned as to why he sent messages to his wife – including one where he conceded to having a bad temper. In court, Hanson said he "literally tapped every word she wanted to hear" about "lost temper, anger management and 'completely my fault'".

Watch: Hammer-wielding thief raids Bargain Hunt star's auction house
A hammer-wielding thief stole more than £21,000 of valuables from a Bargain Hunt star's auction house. Shane O'Malley, 47, ram-raided Charles Hanson's saleroom in Etwall, Derbyshire, at 2.10am on April 18 last year. He and an accomplice broke into the Hansons Auctioneers building hours before a four-day auction of silver, jewellery and watches had been due to start. CCTV captured the crooks using hammers to smash glass display cases and cabinets as they hunted for treasures before fleeing with more than £21,000 worth of valuables. Police were alerted by the firm's alarm and officers found tyre tracks on the grass leading to the building with damage caused to a large window and shutter. A hammer and two blood spatters were found at the scene. A forensic check matched a blood sample to O'Malley. O'Malley, of Rotherham, South Yorkshire, admitted burglary and was jailed for two-and-a-half years at Derby Crown Court on March 3. His accomplice has not been identified. Pc Benjamin Harvey, of Derbyshire police, said: 'This was clearly a targeted and pre-planned attack which led to over £21,000 worth of items being stolen. 'In addition to this, damage was caused to the premises and the cabinets inside – leaving the business even more out of pocket. 'O'Malley was traced after leaving his blood at the scene and has now paid the price for his involvement in this crime with a spell behind bars.' Speaking at the time, Mr Hanson, who is known for appearances on the BBC's Bargain Hunt, Flog It! and Antiques Road Trip, told of his 'sadness' at the raid. He said: 'It's despicable and sad that my Etwall saleroom has been broken into but, thankfully, limited mess and disturbance has occurred. 'This was due to our security system and the police who were quickly on the scene.' Mr Hanson welcomed 'justice being done' but called for 'harsher' sentences for burglars. Speaking after the sentencing he said 'the emotional and financial impact of burglaries is significant'. He added: 'I would say that while justice has been done, I would like to see harsher sentences imposed for crimes of this nature.'

Fans of the show shared tributes to Withers on social media, with one person writing: 'So very sad just watched this episode now, offering my condolences." Withers's death comes just weeks after the passing of Michael Baggott, an antiques dealer who featured on the BBC series Flog It!. Baggott appeared on the BBC's popular antiquing series Flog It!, offering expertise around antique British silver, boxes and early spoons. Rob Unsworth, head of BBC daytime and early peak commissioning, described Baggott as 'one of Flog It 's most memorable characters, expert in all manner of collectables', and who had an 'unrivalled knowledge and enthusiasm for antique spoons and silver'. "Though the series hasn't been in production for several years, we hope Michael's family can take comfort from how much viewers have continued to enjoy his appearances on this ever-popular show,' he added.
