'With the forecast of sunny weather and little precipitation over much of the basin over the next few days, water levels and flows are expected to remain stable or to slowly decrease over the coming week,' the board said on Sunday. PHILIPPI, (WBOY) — The Tygart River is expected to flood in Barbour County overnight Friday, impacting Philippi, Belington and other areas along the river. According to the National Weather Service, the Tygart River is expected to reach flood stage late Friday night to early Saturday morning, spiking up from about 5 feet Friday morning to 21 feet in places by 7 a.m. Saturday as the area gets 1-2 inches of rain, plus snowmelt. It is expected to reach flood levels above 17 feet in Philippi and 14 feet in Belington around midnight. At the expected levels, Sycamore Street, Beech Avenue, and the intersection of U.S. Route 119 and Truck Route 250 in Philippi as well as the bridge on Willow Street and some other city streets in Belington will flood, the alert says. How to stay safe before, during and after a flood According to the National Weather Service, the expected crest will bring moderate flooding and compare to previous flooding events in May 1994 and February 2003. The City of Philippi said it anticipates 'multiple streets and intersections becoming impassable.' The Flood Warning is in effect from Friday night until Sunday morning; after peaking during the day on Saturday, the river is expected to fall back below flood stage early Sunday morning. 'Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles,' the alert says. Updates will be shared on the Barbour County OEM/911 Facebook page. The rest of north central West Virginia is under a Flood Watch through Saturday morning, and parts of southwestern West Virginia including Charleston and Huntington are under a Flood Warning until Friday afternoon.
