Celebrate Arnold Schwarzenegger's Birthday With These 10 Terminator Details a Normal Person Wouldn't Know

As we say happy birthday Arnold Schwarzenegger, who turns 78 today, let's look back at arguably his greatest role. The bodybuilder turned movie star had screen successes before The Terminator — including Conan the Barbarian — but the Terminator became the role that defined him. Here 10 Terminator behind the scenes stories. Related Headlines All 12 Christopher Nolan Movies Ranked All 8 Superman Movies Ranked Worst to Best, Including James Gunn's Brilliant Latest 13 Bond Girl Names Ranked From Silly to Sensational Came to James Cameron in a Dream 'The Terminator came from a dream that I had while I was sick with a fever in a cheap pensione in Rome in 1981. It was the image of a chrome skeleton emerging from a fire. When I woke up, I began sketching on the hotel stationery," the film's writer-director, James Cameron, told the British Film Institute. 'The first sketch I did showed a metal skeleton cut in half at the waist, crawling over a tile floor, using a large kitchen knife to pull itself forward while reaching out with the other hand. In a second drawing, the character is threatening a crawling woman. "Minus the kitchen knife, these images became the finale of The Terminator almost exactly.' The Terminator Script Didn't Grab Arnold Schwarzenegger at First The terrific new book The Last Action Heroes: The Triumphs, Flops, and Feuds of Hollywood's Kings of Carnage, written by Nick de Semlyen, reveals that Schwarzenegger was not initially impressed by the Terminator script. "Still, urged to take a good look at the script by his girlfriend Maria, who had been hooked by it when it arrived at their home, he agreed to meet its writer -director for lunch," de Semlyen writes. Maria, of course, was Maria Shriver, to whom Schwarzenegger was married from 1986 to 2021. Arnold Schwarzenegger Was Originally in the Running to Play Kyle Reese When Schwarznegger was first approached about the film, he was in the running to play the heroic Kyle Reese, the role that ultimately went to Michael Biehn. 'It was a total coincidence because I didn't even try out for Terminator,' Schwarzenegger once told Howard Stern. 'I was trying to be Kyle Reese, and during the lunch when I met with James Cameron, the director, I kept talking all the time about The Terminator.' OJ Simpson Could Have Been The Terminator Studio chief Mike Medavoy wanted the Buffalo Bills star in the role of a cold-blooded killing machine. We'll let you handle the joke here. Medavoy later explained to EW: "At the time, O.J. Simpson had one of those commercials for Hertz where he jumped over a counter and ran to get a rental car. It was all of that athletic stuff, which I thought the Terminator should have." Arnold Schwarzenegger Says 131 Words — Total — in Three of them, of course, are "I'll be back." Don't believe us? Watch this. Linda Hamilton Wanted to Do Shakespeare "I was going to be a Shakespearean actress when I came out of the Strasberg studio in New York. And so I wasn't as excited about The Terminator as my people were," Hamilton told EW. Maybe I was a little snobby. I thought, 'Oh, Arnold Schwarzenegger. I'm not sure about that.'" But later, when she watched him work, she remembered thinking to herself: 'Hmm, this might work.' She added to EW: "There was something so utterly robotic and terrifying about him. I realized that we were doing something new here, and all of the sudden I believed." Sarah Connor's Age The movie never mentions Sarah Connor's age. Though different Terminator movies have since given her different dates of birth, the original film's script states that she is only 19 years old. Specifically, it says she "is 19, pretty in a flawed, accessible way," whatever that means. Could have just left it at "pretty." Shooting During Shooting James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Michael Biehn blew off steam during the shooting of the movie by... shooting. Here they are at a shooting range with John Milius, who directed Schwarzenegger in Conan the Barbarian. Was Defeated by Ralph Macchio, and Nerds The film did fine at the box office, but it wasn't in the Top 20 movies of 1984 — it ranked No. 21 domestically, behind movies like Revenge of the Nerds, Breakin', Bachelor Party, and Red Dawn. The top movie of 1984? Domestically, it was Ghostbusters, followed by Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, Gremlins, and The Karate Kid. (Internationally, Beverly Hills Cop was the No. 1 movie, followed by the others listed, in the same order.) Yep: The Karate Kid trounced The Terminator. But no one was complaining, because The Terminator was made for just $6.4 million, and earned $34 million domestically, and $38 million total. It Found Its Audience on VHS The Terminator quickly gained a VHS following: It was the No. 2 VHS rental of 1985. (Though again lost to that infernal Ralph Macchio, whose film The Karate Kid was No. 1. Partly because of the original film's huge home-video following, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, was No. 1 at the 1991 box office. And a franchise was born. Amazon's 'super comfy' £25 sandals shoppers say 'eliminate' pain when walking

Don't sacrifice comfort during sandals season with this pair currently on offer on Amazon. Now the warmer weather is here, all we want to do is swap our trainers for some open-toed sandals. However, we don't want to sacrifice comfort in the name of style. For anyone who suffers from pain-related issues when walking, such as plantar fasciitis, then it's worth looking for a pair that provide arch support. To help with the search, we have found one pair on Amazon - and they are on offer for 23 per cent less. The online delivery giant has slashed the cost of the COFACE Women's Orthopedic Flip Flops from £32.99 to £25.49. The discount is only available for a limited time, so they could sell out fast. Why are these flip flops proving popular? The main reason is the ergonomic arch support design and cushioned insole, leading to a sandal that provides "cloud-like comfort", whilst also "reducing" pain when walking. There's an adjustable buckle strap that has been designed to be easy to wear, while the anti-slip rubber sole provides extra stability when worn by the pool, when walking on roads and when at the beach. Available in sizes three to nine, with half-sizes also on offer, these Flip Flops can be bought in 10 different colours that include beige, black, pink, tan, navy and white khaki. For shoppers who'd maybe prefer to buy from a well-known retailer, then the Skechers GO WALK Arch Fit 2.0 Sandals provide podiatrist-approved arch support and a cushioned footbed for £60. Alternatively, another budget-friendly pair that still feature similar support are these Cushion Walk Sandals that cost just £18.20 when bought from JD Williams. Those keen on the COFACE Sandals, then they have amassed 8,858 Amazon reviews, earning a 4.2 rating from shoppers who say they are "super comfortable" and that wearing them "eliminates" pain. A happy customer wrote: "These sandals can be casual to a little dressy when needed. I have plantar fasciitis and a bunion on my left foot and these really support my arch and the ball of my foot enough to eliminate pain when walking! "I originally ordered my normal size (6) but ended up reordering a size larger (7) for a little more length under my heel." Fashion deal of the week Jetting off on holiday this summer and need some flattering new swimwear? One that shoppers can't stop gushing over is Next's Plunge Shaping Tummy Control Swimsuit that seems to "firm" wobbly bits around the waistline. Costing just £40, it boasts 10 colours and prints to choose from. With its elegant deep plunge neckline and trendy high-cut leg design, it's a fashionable one-piece that also is "not too revealing". It comes with a tummy-shaping panel around the middle that works to smooth out any lumps and bumps. Each design of the one-piece is available in a regular-fit, with sizes ranging from a six through to 26, although some are beginning to sell out incredibly fast. Those who have bought the £40 Next swimsuit can't stop praising it, as one shopper said: "The thick straps are super supportive and comfortable and the plunge neckline is very flattering while not showing too much cleavage. It's quite a high leg which I like and it feels very comfortable on. "It pulls the tummy in nicely and is lovely and soft. I can't wait to wear this by the pool on holiday and I will feel comfortable swimming in it too." A repeat purchaser wrote: "I've got a few different colours in this style of swimsuit now as it's a very flattering fit whilst also being very comfortable and secure." A second shopper wrote: "These are great quality for the price. I have wide feet with need of arch support. I need a low heel, almost zero drop. These are incredible and fit all of that. "They are comfortable. I just ordered more. No need to break them in. They were an instant wear. They have a velcro adjustable strap. They are slightly squishy which I love." Someone else added: "Very comfortable. Took feet pain away instantly. I love them. I disliked nothing about these shoes. They are super comfortable, And great value for the money." A few users have found issue with the sizing, with some having to go a size up like the customer above. Another such shopper said: "Sadly too short in the footbed. The edge of my heel was hanging off the back. I'm a size 7 and bought a size 7 so need to go up 1/2 a size to 1 size." Though, not everyone has felt that way, as someone praising the fit wrote: "Got these instead of my usual Clarks Cloudsteppers and I'm sold! Way more comfy and fit like a glove! Highly recommend! Bought in a few colors!" Purchase the COFACE Women's Orthopedic Flip Flops for £25.49 on Amazon here.
