Full details as Regis Le Bris signs new Sunderland contract & bosses set exciting aim
REGIS Le Bris has been rewarded for leading Sunderland to the Premier League with a new long-term contract at the Stadium of Light. Twelve months after taking charge of the Black Cats, Le Bris has now committed his long-term future to the club, signing a new deal until the summer of 2028. Le Bris told of his delight at the deal and said there's a collective "desire to become stronger" at Sunderland, while sporting director Kristjaan Speakman said the contract "recognises Le Bris' contribution and continued commitment to the club". Florent Ghisolfi, who arrived as director of football this summer, said the contract reflects the club's "trust in the future" and told of the head coach's importance as the Black Cats look to establish themselves as a Premier League club following promotion. Le Bris was appointed as Sunderland's head coach in June last year on the back of a disappointing 17th place finish for the Black Cats in the Championship. The 49-year-old enjoyed an exceptional first season in England, which culminated in play-off final joy and promotion for Sunderland, who are now less than a fortnight away from playing Premier League football again after an eight-year absence. After his new contract was confirmed, Le Bris said: 'The connection I have with the staff, players, and supporters has been natural, and we shared many great moments together. "The collective ambition is there to see and now, there is a desire to become stronger. I can feel the energy and intent to push forward, and we need that in the next challenges we will face. In every part of the organisation, everyone has their own part to play, and we are all aligned.' Speakman said: 'Like every Sunderland supporter, I'm delighted we are announcing this contract extension for Régis. "It provides clarity going into the Premier League season, but more importantly it recognises his contribution and continued commitment to the club. "Régis has an unrelenting desire for progression that matches our own and we look forward to continuing our partnership throughout the upcoming season, as we move forward with aligned objectives that reflect our shared ambition.' Sunderland have made eight signings so far this summer as they prepare for their Premier League return, and there are more to come, with Marc Guiu on the verge of joining from Chelsea. Strengthening at centre-back is also a priority as a statement summer nears its end. On Le Bris' new contract, Ghisolfi said: 'Regis' new contract is a mark of recognition for the outstanding work he's undertaken since arriving at Sunderland, and more importantly, it reflects our trust in the future we're building together. "Our objective is to establish Sunderland as a Premier League Club –not just in name, but in identity, performance, and ambition – and Regis is an important part of that vision. "He shares our desire, and we are ready to face the challenges and opportunities ahead with conviction and purpose.'

Sunderland closing in on move for Armand Lauriente
Sunderland are on the verge of sealing a deal for Sassuolo forward Armand Lauriente, according to Le Parisien. Lauriente has been a long-standing target for Sunderland this window, and the Frenchman is understood to be keen on a move to Wearside in search of Premier League football. Negotiations between Sunderland and Sassuolo have progressed rapidly in recent days, with a full agreement now said to be close. The move would represent a major coup, as Lauriente delivered an outstanding 2024/25 season in Serie B, scoring 18 goals and providing five assists across 33 appearances. The 26-year-old was named Serie B Player of the Year, helping Sassuolo secure a return to the Italian top flight. Known for his combination of pace, close control and finishing ability, Lauriente is highly rated for his direct attacking style and versatility across the front line. Lauriente's impending arrival at the Stadium of Light would reunite him with Sunderland head coach Regis Le Bris and sporting director Florent Ghisolfi, both of whom previously worked with the player at Lorient. Their existing relationship has reportedly played a role in convincing Lauriente to choose Sunderland despite interest from other clubs in England and Europe. With the team already investing over £100 million in new signings this summer and still targeting a couple more acquisitions, Lauriente will further strengthen Sunderland's options ahead of their return to the Premier League. The Black Cats' aggressive summer window so far underlines their ambition to avoid a relegation battle and establish themselves in the top tier of English football.

Sunderland fail in initial move for Sassuolo's Armand Lauriente
Newly promoted Serie A side Sassuolo are facing the possibility of losing Armand Lauriente and Sunderland have come forward for him. La Gazzetta dello Sport have reported that the Frenchman is a target for the Black Cats and Sunderland had submitted an offer in recent days for the star winger, who impressed in the Serie B during the 2024/25 season. Advertisement But talks have now been stalled as the offer has been rejected. Sassuolo are yet to set a definitive price tag and this is causing problems to Sunderland in their move. The Neroverdi are waiting for the newly promoted Premier League side to make a new approach, as they seem interested in a sale if the right offer is made. Lauriente has starred in the Serie A in the past and has previously worked under Sunderland manager Regis le Bris and sporting director Florent Ghisolfi during his time at Lorient. Sunderland's new director Ghisolfi has 'glowing reputation in football'
BBC Radio Newcastle's Simon Pryde has been discussing what Sunderland's new director of football Florent Ghisolfi will bring to the Stadium of Light, and how his responsibilities will differ to current sporting director Kristjaan Speakman. Ghisolfi, 40, left a position as sporting director at AS Roma last month before taking the role at Sunderland, which he will begin on Thursday."Kristjaan Speakman covers a lot of bases," Pryde said, "He's in overall control of everything that goes on in the football club. From the academy, to the first team, to the strategy that Kyril Louis-Dreyfus [the chairman] wants to implement."I think Ghisolfi will be on recruitment. His umbrella will be over player recruitment and the first team squad. Speakman has a wide brief at the moment and this will allow him to focus because the structures in the Premier League are vastly different than those in the EFL. [There are] a lot more hoops to jump through and lot more administration."Ghisolfi has plenty of experience. [He was] assistant manager at Lorient for two years. [As a football director] he's been at Lens and he's been at Nice so he has a glowing reputation within football as a director."Listen to the full chat on BBC Sounds
