Northwestern's Cox voted state's top track athlete. Plus boys' volleyball, softball honors
Seniors Tyra Cox of Miami Northwestern High School and Jason Atwood of Tallahassee Chiles High School have been named the 2025 Florida Dairy Farmers Miss and Mr. Track, respectively, following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school track and field coaches and media representatives. Cox swept the Class 3A 200-meter (22.99) and 400-meter (51.44) state titles for the second consecutive year. Her time in the 400 meters was the second-fastest among USA high school runners in 2025. She has signed with NCAA Division I University of Florida in Gainesville. For the state's Miss Track honors, Cox, the state's Class 3A girls' track athlete of the year, finished ahead of the state's Class 4A track athlete of the year and 2023 Miss Track winner Chelsi Williams of Lakeland George Jenkins, Class 2A award winner Arianna Garcia of Miami Carrollton and Class 1A award winner Cai Culpepper of Tampa Prep. Atwood won the Class 3A state discus title with a record-setting throw of 218 feet 5 inches, shattering the mark of 210-5 set in 2017 by Sebastian River's Jarez Parks. Earlier in the season, Atwood had a national-leading throw with a mark of 225-4 ¾, the fifth-longest throw in U.S. high school track history. Atwood has signed with NCAA Division I Florida State University in Tallahassee. To be eligible for the state's Mr. Track honors, Atwood was named the state's Class 3A boys' track and field athlete of the year and finished ahead of Class 4A winner Nickiah Wilkinson of Palm Bay Bayside, Class 2A winner Zamarii Sanders of West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman and Class 1A track athlete of the year Justin Woulard of Melbourne Central Catholic. More track state honors Carnell Coleman of West Palm Beach Cardinal Newman High School and Stephon Gallon of Port Orange Spruce Creek High School have been named the 2025 Florida Dairy Farmers Boys' and Girls' Track Coaches of the Year, respectively, following a final round of voting by a panel of state high school track and field coaches and media representatives. Coleman, the state's Class 2A Coach of the Year, led his team to the school's first state track championship with a 53-41 point margin over runner-up West Florida. Other class winners were 4A Coach of the Year Danny Areces of Miami Columbus, 3A COY Victor Arrieta of Miami Belen Jesuit and 1A COY Marcus Bailey of Melbourne Holy Trinity. Gallon, the Class 4A Coach of the Year, led his girls' team to the program's first state championship with 49.5 points over Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas (43) and Lakeland George Jenkins (41). Gallon finished ahead of Class 3A COY Davidson Gill of Fort Lauderdale Dillard, Class 2A COY Dylan Hermelee of Miami Carrollton and Class 1A COY Barrett Saunders of North Palm Beach The Benjamin School. Boys' volleyball state honors Senior outside hitter/setter Jacob Little-Phillips of Winter Park High School has been named the Florida Dairy Farmers 2025 Mr. Volleyball, and Winter Park's Jesse Day has been selected the 2025 Boys' Volleyball Coach of the Year in voting by a panel of Florida high school boys' volleyball coaches. Little-Phillips won his second consecutive Mr. Volleyball award, leading his team to the Class 3A state title by recording 837 assists, 72 kills, 145 digs, 41 aces and 40 blocks. He was recently named a member of the USA Volleyball U21 National Team and has signed with NCAA Division I Stanford University in California. Day, who won the top state coaching award last year, led Winter Park to a 22-5 record and its third consecutive state title in the past four years by sweeping all 21 sets in its seven-match state title run. Softball state honors The Florida Diary Farmers announced the state's classification winners for FHSAA softball, following balloting by a statewide panel of high school softball coaches and prep media representatives. Each is eligible for Miss Softball honors, representing the best of the best. Coach of the Year recipients were also announced. They are eligible for the state's overall Softball Coach of the Year accolades. Here are locals who won classification honors. ▪ Megan Villazon, Senior, Pitcher, Doral Academy, Class 6A Player of the Year Led her team to the state title with a 26-1 record, an 0.63 ERA and 261 strikeouts in 145 innings pitched. She also hit for a .475 average with 45 RBI. Signed with NCAA Division I Florida International University in Miami. ▪ Willie Viruet, Doral Academy, Class 6A Coach of the Year Led his team to a 31-1 record and the state championship. It was Doral's sixth consecutive Final Four appearance, including another state title in 2021. ▪ Gator Rehban, Miami Somerset Academy Silver Palms, Class 3A Coach of the Year Led his squad to a 24-6 record and the school's first state championship after finishing as the state runner-up in 2023 and making it to the state Final Four last season. ▪ Other locals who were in the top 3 in voting for top classification honors: 5A: 3. Arnold's Moss named Class 4A Player of the Year
PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla. (WMBB) — Arnold High School senior right-handed pitcher, Cooper Moss was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 4A Player of the Year. Each summer, the Florida Dairy Farmers honor the top high school baseball talent across the state by naming a Player of the Year in each classification. Those honorees are then entered into consideration for the prestigious Florida Mr. Baseball award. Moss, a University of Florida commit, helped lead the Marlins to their first Final Four appearance in program history. On the mound, he posted a dominant 0.63 ERA with 141 strikeouts. Holmes County's Powell named Rural Coach of the Year
BONIFAY, Fla. (WMBB) – Holmes County head baseball coach, Jeromy Powell was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Rural Coach of the Year. Under Powell's leadership, Holmes County went undefeated against teams within their classification and secured the program's second state title in four seasons. Powell previously led the Blue Devils to a championship in 2021. South Walton's Willcox named Class 3A Player of the Year
SANTA ROSA BEACH, Fla. (WMBB) – South Walton senior pitcher, Charlie Willcox was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 3A Player of the Year. Each summer, the Florida Dairy Farmers honor the top high school baseball talent across the state by naming a Player of the Year in each classification. Those honorees are then entered into consideration for the prestigious Florida Mr. Baseball award. The Georgia Tech signee played a key role in leading the Seahawks to their second consecutive appearance in the state finals. Willcox posted a 1.31 ERA with 79 strikeouts, while also batting .375 with 16 runs scored and 24 RBIs. The Florida Mr. Baseball winner is expected to be announced on June 9. New Doral Academy basketball coach. Plus lacrosse and beach volleyball
Daniela Barrios, a Doral Academy alum, will be taking over as head coach of the girls' basketball program with a deep-rooted connection to the school. A 2019 graduate, she played basketball at Doral for seven years and made history as the school's first 1,000-point scorer. She continued her playing career at Keiser University, an NAIA affiliate in West Palm Beach. She gained valuable experience at the collegiate level. In the past four years, she has served as an assistant coach at Doral Academy to former coach Allison Bustamante, who was recently named new women's basketball coach at Barry University, an NCAA Division II program in Miami Shores. State lacrosse honors Senior attack McKenzey Craig of Tampa Plant High School has been named the state's 2025 Florida Dairy Farmers Miss Lacrosse. Craig scored 81 goals and added 67 assists for her undefeated Class 2A state championship team. She completed her high school career with 242 goals and posted 192 assists and was named a USA Lacrosse All-America. She will play lacrosse for NCAA Division I Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland.. Jayne Chapman of Plant was named state Girls' Coach-of-the-Year after leading her team to a 24-0 record and the Class 2A championship, the school's first state lacrosse title. Chapman posted a 47-1 record the past two years and a state runner-up finish in 2024 before winning the 2025 title. Senior midfield/attack Jayden Vega of The Benjamin School in North Palm Beach was selected the state's 2025 Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Lacrosse, and Benjamin coach Peter Cordrey is the 2025 Boys' Lacrosse Coach of the Year. Vega helped his squad to its second straight Class 1A state championship by scoring 81 goals and adding 65 assists. Vega completed his three-year varsity career with 168 goals and 103 assists. The dual-sport standout has signed to play both lacrosse and football at NCAA Division I Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. Cordrey, who repeated as the state's top coach, finished his seventh year at Benjamin by leading his squad to a 24-1 record and its second straight Class 1A state championship. In seven years at Benjamin, Cordrey has posted a 104-24 record, including a 45-2 record the past two years and the school's only state titles. The Florida Dairy Farmers Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers' commitment to the state's youth. This is the 33rd year of these unique awards as we honor the state's top athletes and coaches in sanctioned FHSAA sports. Beach volleyball recap The final impact of South Florida teams in the FHSAA state's beach volleyball season occurred in the state tournament, which featured Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas in 3A and Miami Westminster Christian in 1A. To reach state, Westminster Christian won the 4-1A region title by beating LaSalle 4-1, Boca Raton Christian 4-1 and West Palm Beach King's Academy 5-0. Prior, they beat LaSalle 5-0 and True North Academy 5-0 for the District 16-1A championship. In the state semifinals, Westminster Christian defeated Jacksonville Episcopal (17-7) 5-0 to advance to the state finals, where the Warriors lost to Tampa Berkley Prep. Entering those state finals, Westminster Christian (19-1) was the top ranked team in the state. Tampa Berkley Prep (22-0) was ranked second. In the region championship win against King's Academy, the No.1 pair from Westminster Christian (Zoey Matias and Gigi Artiles) won 21-18, 21-11. The No.2 pair (Alex Washington and Lia Gonzalez) won 21-19, 23-21. The No.3 pair (Alyana Cadavid and Cassie Thomas) won 21-19, 22-20. The No.4 pair (Coco Garcia and Dani Arroyo) won 21-11, 21-7. The No.5 pair (Frenchie Pazmino and Lauren Palczynski) won 21-7, 17-21, 15-8. Westminster Christian also includes Lili Nunez, Ella Wohl, Bella Fernandez, Luci Del Campo, Ava Cantos, Sylvie Curbelo, and Olivia Hernandez. To qualify for state, St. Thomas Aquinas won the 4-3A region title by beating West Boca 5-0, Wellington 3-2 and Weston Cypress Bay 3-2. Prior, the Raiders beat Cooper City 5-0 and Boca Raton 3-2 to capture the District 15-3A championship. Cypress Bay (16-1) won the District 16-3A Tournament by beating Coral Reef and Western. At regionals, the Lightning beat Fort Myers Gateway and Boca Raton to matchup against St. Thomas Aquinas in the region finals. Cypress Bay entered the region finals unbeaten, winners of 16 consecutive matches. En route to winning the state title, Jupiter (16-1) defeated St. Thomas Aquinas 3-0 in a state semifinal. The state's third place Raiders finished the season 19-5. They are: No.1 pair (Emma Bear and Alexa Raymond); No.2 (Leah Novatne and Madeline Meltz); No.3 (Dior Ferguson and Emily Rosinsky); No.4 (Addison Steinberg and Emi Bernal); No.5 (Gianna Gorsin and Karina Andresky). The Raiders also include Abigail Scalzitti, Isabella Vergara, Camila Ortiz, Caitlyn Ward, Kamila Alvarado, Ava Alberani, Daniela Alvarez, Laura Grubor.
